The computer (Surface Pro 7+) will say that it's charging when I plug it in, but the battery doesn't actually get any more charged. Even if no apps are open, even if it's turned off, the battery never gets any more charged when I leave it plugged in. Please tell me someone else has run into this!

I've had this laptop for just over a month but there's these weird blue line around the middle of the screen. It's only really noticeable when the screen is dark and also is not noticeable at all when the screen is off (so my presumption is it has to do something with the backlight). Is it best to buy Microsoft Complete and send it in to Microsoft or any other tips to combat this?

I encountered the phenomenon, that my Surface Laptop 7 (ARM) has only 2-6 Mbit/s Upload with different speedtests over WiFi.

Download is fine of what the internet connection delivers.

I purchased a surface pro 7 with the dock to use with my 2 displays however it isn't powerful enough for my daily uses and I need something else, I have a Low-ish budget, (capped at £400), Whilst the Cpu, The memory and the ram are good enough, The GPU is simply a massive letdown, And that alone isn't good enough to justify using it. I just want to ask you a few questions.

One, Is there any possible way to make the GPU itself any more powerful? (other than a cooler)

Two, If I did purchase a surface book 3, Would the GPU be significantly more powerful than the Surface Pro 7 as it has a dedicated gpu, And is the Surface Book 3 any good as I like the Surface Pro Form factor and that would build upon it. (or not, Depending whether its any good, I have no idea)

Three, The most important one, What surface would you recommend that is within £400, That would give me enough GPU power, (preferably with a dedicated GPU), a Core i5 or higher, 8 or more Gb of ram (preferably more but I can handle 8), and Storage i'm pretty flexible with, But at least 256Gb of memory.

I need enough power to do some basic gaming, And some video editing with Davinci Resolve, (no i'm not a youtuber before you ask.)

Ideally, I would like a Surface Laptop Studio however the price range is completely out of what I am looking for.

I know that is a very tight budget for a surface but I am not sure what to do hence i'm asking. Thank you so much!

So, I have a few more weeks left in my return window for my SL7 (ARM) and am TRYING to push past the compatibility issues. I have a few different automotive scanning programs (OBD2 scanner to USB on laptop). Some "manufacturer specific" ones run only in VMs so those definitely don't work, but I have another that is more generic (but old) called autotap. On that one, the software runs but it doesn't recognize the scanner itself which, I think, is because it is essentially a serial to USB device internally. I've tried some of the various tips from the Mac guys (who run ARM 64 under parallels on the Mac ARM processors) with regard to installing later drivers form FTD with no luck.

Anyway, is anyone running ANY automotive OBD2 scanner software on their ARM device at this point successfully?

Alternatively, have any of you successfully dealt with the whole "virtual com port" issue?

I am currently using a Surface Pro 7 Plus, bought in December 2023. By that time the model was on the market for almost 3 years, but its i3 and i5 configurations were the last Surface devices to be fanless and it had remained the strongest windows laptop or tablet I could find to be fanless.

Is there any reason for that? I mean, obviously fanless devices have downsides. The Surface Pro 7+ performs very well under all work loads I was throwing at it, but even indie games that should run on the integrated graphics would often suffer from microstutters due to the graphics card jumping between maximum and minimum clock rate, rather than settling at a stable middle ground.

But game loads are not a design goal for these. My contrast, I very much enjoy working on a completely noiseless device when working from home, or getting tasks done on the laptop.

This all has me wondering: Why did Microsoft drop this feature? And maybe even more so: Why didn't it come back at all with the first round of Snapdragon X devices?

If the processors have become more power efficient over the years, shouldn't that make it more attractive to build fanless versions?

This may not be the fix for everybody, but I found that my Surface Laptop 7 (ARM64) would sit on a black screen for 2 minutes when booting or rebooting. I found in the event logs that it was likely due to LSM (Local Session Manager) service hanging on startup (Error Event 7022). I initially couldn't find any matching solutions for fixing this issue until I found this article:

Then I remembered that my company has a domain policy for enabling hardware acceleration for remote desktop. I changed the group policy for my pc to disable hardware acceleration for remote desktop sessions, applied policy using gpupdate.exe command, restarted and it no longer hangs at the boot screen for two minutes.

I'm assuming this is due to ARM64 graphics drivers not supporting this feature yet. Hopefully it works in the future.

The concept of a full HD backup/restore should be a simple one. And yet, with some meddling from Microsoft to keep things complicated, here we are!

I use EaseUS todo backup to take full HD backups of windows installs, for ease of recovery in the event I lose a machine. My personal desktop has worked fine with this, I've test recovered and actual recovered several times by restoring from a recent backup to new disk, and it boots right up. Which is how it should work, given that it's literally cloning the lost disk.

However, I'm testing scenarios involving Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 laptops.

I have 2 Surface Laptop 3s, both with the same specs. I've taken a full HD backup with EaseUS of one of the laptops. I've done a full HD recovery to the HD of the 2nd laptop.

It will not boot.

It is stuck trying to run Startup Repair, and erroring out that it couldn't repair.

I cannot do a repair install.

I have no option to make the HD bootable again.

I can do a clean install of Windows 10 onto the HD, confirming the HD works perfectly fine.

As another test, I tried taking my clean Windows 10 install HD, and doing a recovery only of the Windows 10 partition. That also has no luck.

I am completely baffled as to why cloning a full HD to an identical HD of an identical laptop results in boot errors.

What crap did Microsoft pull to foil our attempts for quick disaster recovery options, and what do I need to do to appease these evil Microsoft gods?

I'm currently using an Intel-based laptop for my design work, which includes AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Rhinoceros 3D. I’ve been hearing a lot about the new Snapdragon processors, especially in terms of speed and battery life, and I’m considering making the switch.

Does anyone here have experience running these design tools on a Snapdragon-powered laptop? How well do they perform, especially in terms of compatibility, rendering speed, and overall workflow? Any limitations I should be aware of?

So I'm a small programmer that uses programs such as Visual Studio Code but I also use programs like Roblox studio and Unity so I need something that is able to run this sort of stuff easily.

Recently I have been travelling a lot and the problem is that I am unable to bring anything with me other than a Clunky 2010 Macbook that dual boots Windows 10 so it is wayyyy beyond its last steps to use programs like VS Code.

So I need a new laptop..

I've been interested in the Surface Series for a while due to it being quite powerful and not bulky, obviously its for programming but I am also interested in being able to do some light gaming e.g Minecraft w/Performance Mods so it will need to run well.

My budget is around £700 but I don't mind paying more than £300 extra if needed, I also don't mind waiting until a sale happens to get a reduced price.

Any help on picking would be great and deeply appreciated.

I'd really like a detachable 2-in-1 device that can be used as a normal laptop, but where the screen is also detachable for use as a standalone tablet.

Unfortunately every single device nowadays, be it Microsoft, Dell, Lenovo, or HP that fit these specs have this annoying standing support on the back of the screen, so you can't just hold the keyboard and have the screen hold itself, like with a regular laptop.

Aside from that, you have models like the Surface studio where you can collapse the screen onto the keyboard and get a "fat" tablet, but not detach it.

I'm unhappy with these design choices, i just want a laptop device with a detachable screen and aside from the surface book, there seemingly are none. And the surface book 3 is old and can only be bought used and has reported issues about the detachment abilities.

Can any one recommend a decent device where the screen can hold itself, but also is detachable from the keyboard, or am I out of luck here and need to buy a 5 year old device used?

Recently I updated my Surface Pro 8 and now the camera doesn't work anymore. It isn't possible to activate the camera in any way (neither face recognition nor Camera app itself). Even the white light next to the camera doesn't work.

What could I do now?

I’ve been running canary ring for a few weeks now and the difference in compatibility is huge. Corporate apps which weren’t compatible now are and I can run the full adobe creative cloud suite including Audition which is my main program for podcast audio editing.

I come from an iPad where I used goodnotes, and I was wondering if there was an app for the surface pro 11 where I could transfer all my notes and used as a substitute. I know everyone loves onenote but I think it’s not the right fit for me, as I would like an app that goes page by page.

Audio mixer is no longer working, no audio controller showing up in Manage. Tried driver packages, but no real luck.

Someone is selling a well speced Book 2 on Facebook marketplace, with the disclaimer that the keyboard battery is not charging. The battery report has 63 charge cycles for that.

New surface pro pen works — it connects to my surface, can erase things in one note, and the surface recognizes when I touch the screen with the pen. But for whatever reason, it won’t allow me to actually draw or select things with the pen. The surface fully recognizes that the pen is touching the screen, yet it does not actually draw the line I’m drawing! Help!

I have been using a Precision Mouse & keyboard for years and really like them so don’t want to have to buy a new ones. Issue is, my new PC doesn’t have a BT adapter so I can only use the mouse plugged it via USB & can’t use the keyboard at all. My question is - would I be able to connect to the Precision mouse & keyboard via a BT USB dongle that I plug into the PC? I believe they’re both compatible with BT LE 4.0 and above.

So, I often try to clean my surface pro keyboard, although I sometimes worry I clean it too well and get too much moisture in it. I say this because, for some reason, the touch pad has started to be very unresponsive, but only in specific ways. Moving the mouse around works perfectly, nothing is wrong with that, but for some reason, when I press down to click something or highlight and copy something, it doesn't seem to want to work have of the time? Despite hearing a click, it often doesn't click something on the screen or highlight when I click down on it. It only works if I put down a decent amount of force on the touchpad, so while it does work, it's often very unresponsive and I need to really press down for it to register a click. Tapping twice lightly still works, but for some reason the actual clicking down has become not very responsive. It didn't act like this until a day or two ago. Is there any reason for this/anyway to fix this?

So we have a ton of these at work, rated 65W on the power brick.

But what I’m looking for is a way to adapt the SPD82 connector (the surface connector) to a (PD) USB-C (male) connector so it can (quick) charge other devices.

I know the power brick has a lousy 5V USB-A (female) on it, but that’s not what I’m after. Not looking for an adapter to replace the power brick, more looking for adapter to make the brick more flexible for other devices.

EDIT / also the SPD82 is on various monitor docks/KVM type things and stuff at work, it would be cool if I can just adapt the Surface Connector to USB-C and plug in into a device other than the Surface laptops.

Is there any usecase can share is about the tablet mode? Sometime don't have enough space to put my keyboard on, even it is flex keyboard.
