We've always been installing Win10 Pro on all the Surface devices that comes with Win11 preinstalled. Using a USB created from the Windows Creation Tool. Just got in a new Surface Laptop 7th edition and it will not force boot to the USB. Yes, i am holding down the volume down button before powering on. Yes, I did change the boot order to USB Boot in the UEFI bios as well. It just keeps continuing to its Win11 setup screen. I reached out to our CDW rep to see if they can ask their microsoft team and they said "that the new Copilot models (Pro 11 and Laptop 7) are not actually able to run Windows 10. It is a hardware related roadblock that was implemented as they were built to run Windows 11" - I couldn't find anything online to confirm this and didnt know if anyone was able to get around this?
Hello,
I use a Surface Laptop 2 for work (specs below) and I recently had to purchase a new laptop for personal use and contracting work. Unfortunately I purchased a Lenovo laptop, which has been absolutely useless - extremely slow and dysfunctional. I am getting a refund for the Lenovo one and want to be very intentional about the one I purchase next. Speed is key for me - I can't tolerate slow devices. I find my work Surface Pro to be great.
The issue is budget as I can't afford a new one exactly like my work one so I am looking at refurbished options. I am just wondering about the differences between the Microsoft Laptop 3 versus the 2 and how important some aspects my current one are.
Work Specs of the great laptop.
- Surface Laptop 2 (256GB)
- System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
- Processor 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-1135G7 @ 2.40GHz 2.42 GHz
- Installed RAM 8.00 GB (7.83 GB usable)
- Using Windows Pro 11.
I can see the two following options: available:
Can someone compare these for me?
I guess the question is - Is the Surface Laptop 2 and the Surface Laptop 3 perform similarly? How important is the 2.4GHz to the performance? Is a Microsoft 3 with only 1.2GHZ likely to perform similarly?
Would really appreciate any insights as I don't have a clue what I'm doing clearly.
Thanks!
The type cover doesn't work when its magnetically attached to the lower bezels of the screen, only works when I lay it fully flat. If I tilt or move the type cover slightly higher it stops working (or disconnects, I'm not sure).
Things I tried:
Attaching and detaching countless times
Rebooting and Shutdown
Force reboot
Surface Diagnostics App
Going into UEFI and exiting
Most of the 'solutions' I found
At this point I really don't know what to do. Help is appreciated.
Hi, shot in the dark here but i was wondering if anyone has a copy of the SP7 skin template? I have nothing to offer but a thank you, good day.
Is there a way to permanently keep the kickstand shut? I want it to treat it like a tablet 24/7
I personally don't. a 2 in 1 is a laptop with a hinge that does a 360. but I've seen some people call them 2 in 1's and i want to know what people think.
Picked up my surface pro 11 elite cpu yesterday. Software experience is incomparable to Mac os. Like going back in time literally. But I'm an android pc guy so I'm used to it.
I didn't realise how many apps still haven't got an Arm version. Nordpass being one of them. And EA games app but I know it's not a gaming pc.
Has anyone found these to be so frustrating you returned it? I'm debating on just getting an android tablet like the Samsung s10 ultra. You lose alot but it's great at what it does.
Love to hear your opinions and perhaps how they changed over time.
Cheers
Hey guys, currently running a Surface Pro 11 Qualcomm Adreno X1-85 with a surface dock 2 and 2 monitors.
Issue is the monitors do not consistently work. Sometimes none work, sometimes both work, most of the time just 1 is running. I have tried dock firmware update and driver re-installs. Plugging the monitors directly into the surface pro works just fine
The connection is USB-C from dock to USB-C monitors, any help is appreciated!
My 15 inch SB2 tablet battery is failing and I think it's time to replace the unit. I, however, love the display on this--brightness, sharpness, touch. Are there other Windows laptops with roughly the same resolution and size?
Sorry for my lack of geekness. So many problems with this dang computer.
Have finally decided to remove the SSD and use it with an enclosure.
But I don't know what to buy. Is it an enclosure for an M.2 2230 SSD?
Does this link like it might the right one?

I'm getting a new laptop for school for Christmas and I'm trying to decide between these 2. I'm an engineering student and my two biggest needs are note taking/math work on using the surface pen and CAD.
I think the note taking is more important for me, as I will be doing it more often. I can from a book 3 and used it almost everyday as I prefer it to hand typed notes and I can write out math problems. I would only be using CAD software occasionally when a class needs it. I know solid works can run emulated in windows on arm and I've seen people say the surface pro 11 can run it but not large assemblies. I've got a PC with a ryzen 7800x3d and 6950xt at my apartment so any big assemblies or heavy workloads I can just use my PC, I just need to be able to work on single parts or small assemblies in the go if neccesary or at class.
Question, is the better battery life and efficiency of the pro 11 much better and preferable in this scenario to the studio laptop? Is it worth it to pay more for the power of the rtx or workstation GPU or should I get the surface pro 11 for my use case? It seems they both can do the windows inking well with the slim pen
Amazon renewed, excellent condition, delivers tomorrow, and got the 4 year protection plan for $190, so ~$1,300 total. Got it with my credit card in case there’s any shenanigans.
It’s the absolute base model.
I’ve had my sights set on a refurbished 64gb studio 2 for some time now, but from Microsoft with the pen that netted out to $3,000. Then rumors of the studio 3 coming next fall made me fear the opportunity cost.
Snagged this because I love the form factor and want to do some basic photo editing work, website design, alight data analytics and general browsing. I figure I’ll either resell or build a PC for more intensive needs in the future.
Did I do ok? Thoughts?
There doesn’t seem to be any SIM card or memory card slots available on the exterior of the laptop
I checked and all of my windows updates are completed except the optional updates "HIDClass" and "Cumulative Update Preview for .NET Framework" but after a quick google I don't think these have anything to do with it. Seeing if anyone has had this issue and how it was resolved. I WFH so really stinks that I'm stuck to one spot in the house.
Thanks!
Editing to add: I also just tried restarting since it froze, then when I restarted and got to the login screen to swipe up it didn't give me the login boxes. After trying to restart then also fully shut down and waiting, it still didn't work. I then got on to Ethernet and restarted and it worked just fine.
Wanted to know which laptop is microsoft offering to replace Surface Laptop 3 with if needed service repair. Many times Microsoft offers newer devices cause they stop making older ones. So which devices is it offering right now and what is the cost at which it is offering. If any idea please do let me know
Hi I’m going to college next fall and I need some opinions I’m set on the Surface Laptop 7 Snapdragon® X Elite (12 Core). My current laptop is a 11 inch 4 gigs of ram Chromebook. My question is would 13.8 inches be to small should I just bite the bullet and get the 15 inch.
While using the Internet, the Wi-Fi connection suddenly disconnects. At this time, it appears as if Wi-Fi is connected in the status window at the bottom left, but in reality, the connection is disconnected.
Do you know a solution?
I've already tried a clean reinstall of Windows, and I've also tried deleting the Wi-Fi driver and reinstalling it through a reboot.
So I was trying to run some videos on it and it was working and then it's sudden I close out of it and go back in and suddenly it says I need an update it's 2024 in the store shut down and I can't do anything
Hi. When its in tablet mode, i swipe up from the bottom to bring up the task bar. However, the start menu comes up every time, which is annoying. Is there any way to disable this? I can't see a solution anywhere. Thanks
I'm expecting to have to send my laptop in eventually, but currently waiting on the engineers to review the issue I have in a previous post. It ended up getting shunted to the safety team who passed on my info and pictures to the engineers to review since it could potentially be a defect (my pro 9 is less than a year old). I'm just wondering how long roughly I could expect to wait to hear back about next steps.
Hi all! I’m new to using surface for class to take notes, and I’m looking for one like Xodo but with a one-time payment..
Appreciate recommendations please! 🙏🙇♀️
I like xodo because of its flexibility and because I write/ highlight loads of notes. However the monthly payment makes things difficult for me.
I just purchased a refurbished Surface Go (the first version) and am looking for a non-$99 stylus. I am going to be starting a little foray into digitial art, so basics are fine for the beginning, and I'll see how it goes from there before committing to anything more expensive/high-performing. For a trial run, I'm just looking around on amazon and see a few different chinese-brand pens that say they're compatible with the Go, but always have "3/2" after the versions, I can't find one that has the original Go compatibility. Anyone have experience and a recommendation on this? Thanks in advance!
PS I'm just starting my research, so please don't be rude or condescending as some hobbyists can be to newbies. I'm a new father to a toddler so my time for researching things is severely limited these days.
Hi all,
I've seen a lot of chatter around the Elite chips and getting 4k 120hz working, but I can't find a list of supported refresh rates anywhere for the plus variant.
I'm getting eye strain on the X plus laptop I have at 120hz on my QHD monitor and for whatever reason this is more comfortable when driving it at 144hz on another Windows laptop I have (x86, AMD GPU).
The screen I'm using can go up to 165hz, and using the same cable, my M1 Air will work at that speed, so the cable . monitor isn't at fault.
Thanks in advance.
My pencil just broke and I need a new one. I have an old Surface pro 1 and I can only find pens which are compatible from surface pro 3 and newer. Are those pens really not compatible anymore?
Has someone a recommendation?
Hello everyone,
I'm planning to purchase a new Surface Pro through my employer for work use. The prices for the device with Windows 11 Pro (~€1800) are significantly higher than those with the Windows Home version (€1100). Therefore, I'm considering buying the Home version and using a less expensive OEM key to upgrade to Pro. I have two main concerns:
Can an OEM license be used if the device needs to be managed within my company's Azure Active Directory?
Are there any special considerations when upgrading to Pro given that the Surface is based on an ARM processor?
Thank you very much for your help! I haven't been able to find much information online regarding these specific questions.
I've recently dropped the substantial bones for the bestest Surface Pro 11 and the new Flex Keyboard + Pen. And I'm having an issue with intermittent lag from the alt shortcut for using the eyedropper that is absolutely demolishing my workflow. Basically, when using a brush I press alt and click on the image to pick a color. It helps me blend. But photoshop on this device will randomly lag by about 1 second or not pick the color at all about 1 out of every 3 tries. It's infuriating.
I've looked online, but most pots about this issue are years old and are dealing with Wacom/Windows Ink issues that are both no longer relevant in current Windows and not applicable to a Surface Pen. I obviously cannot bypass Windows Ink on a Surface device.
In testing, when simply using the shortcut and the keyboard trackpad there is no lag. When I use the eyedropper tool itself with the pen, there is no lag. When I use the Alt shortcut while using the Eyedropper tool (to pick the secondary color) there IS lag. So it is strictly an issue with using the Alt shortcut and pen, no other performance issue.
At this point, I'm at my wit's end and am contemplating returning this moody "no compromises" device and going back to my crusty old Surface Book 2 that has no issues.
I just bought a Surface Pro 11 and a Flex Keyboard. After much research, it's my understanding that in Windows 11 the Surface will always be in TABLET mode when the flex is detached. I wanted to use the Surface as a laptop with the flex keyboard detached, not a tablet.
I haven't found a solution for this issue so I guess I would like to know what is different when using my Surface as a tablet but with the detached keyboard versus if the Surface was really in laptop mode with the detached keyboard? I admit I am very confused with what changes when the Surface is in so called tablet mode versus laptop mode.
I hate that Windows 11 took away the option to turn on/off tablet mode.
Thanks for any insight. I love the Surface but am not sure I should keep the flex keyboard if, when detached, I will only be in Tablet mode.
I am gthinking to buy one of these used devices for my kids. I am wondering which one will be better in terms of being snappy, more powerful and better in battery life in day to day use. Will be using for youtube, web surfing, office, online study, zoom etc.
Thank you
