I am looking for a Surface recommendation for college.

Good morning r/surface. So, my son will be attending college this Fall and I want to get him a surface(computer and tablet are recommended). I just want to let you know that I have been an Apple guy/family for a while, so I'm looking for some input here. Here are the listed minimum requirements. Thank you!

Windows 11 (64-Bit)

Intel 13th Gen i5/i7 or Core Ultra 5/7 Series 1 or AMD Ryzen 5/7 7030/7040/8000 Series; or higher

32 GB or higher

500 GB SSD (Solid State Drive) or higher

Thanks!

My Surface pro 8 problem

Hey there guy . I have 2 problems with my surface pro 8 , first is that it charges only up to 99% . I deleted the battery drive and i reached 100 but again after a rest it was back to 99 and not reaching 100 . And the second problem is a weird noise , like a buzzing sound it makes while I'm Playing videos. The sound is more detectable in lower volume. Did anyone have the same problems ? I would love it know if i can fix these

Surface Pro 7 vs iPad Air 4th gen

Currently own both of these devices and a laptop.

I am currently trying to downsize and combine my usage into one device if possible.

I mainly use the iPad as a consumption device (Streaming services) and for note taking on Onenote.

The surface pro and my laptop get used for transferring photos from my camera, basic CAD, web/email requiring Certs (not supported by iPad).

I think the surface pro should be able to handle all of this, but the issue I run into is for travel we download movies/episodes from various streaming app and this doesn't see possible on the Surface?

Anyway to download say Disney Plus shows on a windows device?

I'm in need of a laptop/tablet for college as a Music Ed major. I need help deciding, I'm stuck on 3

I'm going into college as a music Ed major. I also want to do some art, and maybe some gigging (using the tablet for sheet music). What is the way to go?

Hi there. As the title says, I need a tablet/laptop, and I'm stuck between 3. Those 3 are the Ipad, the surface pro, or the galaxy tab. There are some factors that are eating me apart for what I should get.

I know I may get hate for this, but I am a lifelong android user. I give Apple props where it's due, and that is they've made an amazing tablet, so much so that it's enticing for even me. But there's one problem to start, the compatibility between my phone and Ipad could become a problem. I don't know exactly how much of a problem, as files can just be sent via email but it still concerns me. I know this is a great choice for art as well. This is also a more expensive option, especially after the keyboard and pen.

The surface pro could be real good to, but to get a more decent system that will last longer is crazy expensive. Microsoft also has good art apps that would be put to good use. This is my "safest" option, but also the most expensive if I want 16 GB of RAM, keyboard, and the pen (which is required for me)

The Galaxy Tab would be low cost and already comes with the keyboard (Tab 9 FE). Might not be as great for art as they're not as known for that area, but I'm sure I'd figure it out, I know there's something I could use.

Now, being a clueless music Ed major, what would y'all recommend? Open mindedness would be appreciated, I hope no controversy comes of this. If anyone figures out a better plan to any of these, let me know! I like to think I'm at least a little open minded.

Replacement keyboard for Surface Pro 6 that doesn't have frayable fabric finish

I have a Surface Pro 6 I bought cheap off FB Mktplace. I really like having a lightweight, very portable machine for basic laptop work. Does anyone know of a specific, non-OEM replacement keyboard from Amazon that doesn't have the awful fabric/fake suede covering on the original keyboards? Mine works fine but has frayed all around the edges and I feel like I can't really clean the fabric. I'd like a harder plastic, easy to clean finish. I do want magnetic connection. I know the non-OEM keyboard will need to use bluetooth connection and will have to be charged separately.

Thanks for any recommendations.

Help me with my old surface, please

I have a surface pro 5 running windows 10 22H2 with Intel m3-7Y30 processor, 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. Recently it's become more buggy even when i do simple tasks like read email on Outlook, using MS Word or open 3 - 5 tabs on Edge, just one application at a time but it's still buggy. Right now i am not in a good financial situation that can afford an other device so I am looking for some software solutions that could improve my surface. I've tried some tips that I found on Google but didn't have significant change. So anything that I can do to fix that? Like install a simple Windows version or something else. Please help me. Sorry for my bad English. Thank you

Surface Pro on Arm. How do you find its sleep performance?

Hi all,

As we are close to seeing new Pro line models for consumers soon, before getting a new model, I'd like to learn how you see your ARM-based models' sleep performance in terms of battery drain. I am a Pro 4 user, and I also have other laptops, but I hate to find them crazy hot with a drained battery in my bag in the mornings.

Per an LTT (Linus) video and others' experience, this seems to be an ongoing issue for most people, and it is due to Intel CPUs' broken feature. Do you also experience this problem with your ARM-based models?

Surface for remote desktop

Hello, I'm looking for a device for my 24/7 support job. I have my work laptop that is 24/7 pluged at work and I use my ultrabook to connect to it. I also have a iPad but I really want device that can "do it all" and by "do it all" for me is just videos, browsing internet, remote desktop and maybe some light games like stardew valley etc. My question is if I should go for Pro X 16gb sq2 refurbed that is like 200€ cheaper then new Pro 9 with 8gb od ram. I think I'm ok with 8gb od ram because my work laptop Is 8gb, 5gen i5, alot of security sw on background and it still works fine.

What is "Sandstone" like in the flesh?

Hi All,
I'm considering a Surface Laptop 4 as a replacement for my aging Dell. Seems to tick all the boxes and as long as you get the right configuration, should last me a few years.
I notice that Microsoft sell refurbished and presently, an i5, 16GB, 512GB goes for around £560. I could buy cheaper second hand (and am considering) but of course there is the 12 month warranty here.

The issue - Microsoft Refurbished, if I want anything with 16GB then it would be in "Sandstone". What s this colour like in the flesh? All the pictures I'm seeing seem to show a light, metallic gold which.....listen, I know, colour should be least thing to worry about, but still.
Is it pink/gold? Doesn't completely put me off, but would love an idea of what it really looks like.
Cheers All.

Is anyone else not that impressed with their SP9 SQ3?

OK I’m not just trying to be a hater, but I’ve had the SP9 SQ3 16 GB since it’s launch. I use it for daily stuff: Google Chrome (which I had to switch to Edge because of sluggish performance, now trying out Canary), Zoom, etc etc.

I switched from a 2021 MBP to the SP9 for these past two years solely because of 5G, and overall I have just found it to be a sluggish experience. I feel like performance really didn’t improve much overtime. Sure some of the apps may have become ARM native but I can’t say it’s translated to a faster experience?

I’m slightly venting here I guess I’m concerned holding out for the SP10. I don’t want to be disappointed with another expensive computer that is only 75% of what I wanted it to be.

Does anyone else feel this way about their SP9? I’m not gaming, doing video editing, or graphic design. I’m talking about daily tasks. Yes I open up a ton of web browser tabs at the same time, but geez that’s kind of the extent of my processing demand. Am I really out on left field here? I’m trying to ask other long-term users their thoughts…

Anyone know what this is?

Three year old surface pro 8. I always have the keyboard case on. The other day, I opened and turned it on and noticed these dead pixel-looking marks. it’s only really noticeable on a dark background. Is this just dead pixels, or something else? Not sure what could have caused it since I really don’t bring this thing with me anywhere.

Given this is three years old, I’m also assuming i’m SOL when it comes to warranty service (purchased directly from MS).

Thanks in advance

External gpu or cloud rendering on surface pro 9

Hello everyone, at the beginning of this year I bought myself a Surface Pro 9 (i7, 16gb RAM, 512 ssd) for study (I study architecture) and it works perfectly in almost all programs where there is 3D modeling and rendering, like Revit and 3DS Max and Absolutely does not cope with lumion. It is clear that this problem arose due to the lack of a graphics card and therefore I am torn between buying an external graphics card or subscribing to cloud rendering. I would like to know if anyone has encountered a similar situation and if you have any advice on what would be the best option, and, for example, if it is an external graphics card, then how best to choose it, etc. Thanks for reading, if you made it to the end, I hope for your advice

Upgrade Surface Pro 4?

I got a great deal on the Surface Pro 4 back on black Friday of 2016 and I really loved it. I try to convince myself this thing still suits my needs but honestly it's old now and it barely works. Maybe after I let it warm up and charge for 15 mins it kinda works OK, but it doesn't work without the charge cable.

What's been your experience with longevity on your surface? I started to really notice a decline in functionality around 2 years ago.

How have the surface's quality held up over time? In 2016 they were groundbreaking, badass high quality devices. Are they still great or have they declined?

I'm also considering a Samsung Galaxy tab but man I really loved my surface before it declined.

What to do with a “Loaded” SP6?

Hey y’all! I’ve had my SP6 sitting in my drawing unused for the past few years and I’m unsure what to do with it. I’d like a good tablet that I could edit pictures and write emails on while I’m on the road but for whatever reason I’m not loving the tablet experience on the SP6. Currently in the process of a complete reboot and a software update hoping that maybe it’ll improve the experience. Not sure if it’s worth selling, or maybe try to install Linux? Any other suggestions? What are people doing with their older SP’s?

Thanks!

Specs: i7/16gb/500gb

Keyboard issues with new SP6

We just bought a Surface Pro 6 and the Microsoft keyboard cover. I've had an SP7 for a few years and love it, so it seemed an easy choice when my spouse's computer died. We went for the 6 due to budget constraints and the fact that it's mostly going to be used with just the Chrome browser and maybe the Kindle app. There have been intermittent keyboard issues. Sometimes the keyboard doesn't work at all. Sometimes the keys work but the trackpad doesn't. I tried using the keyboard from my SP7 on the SP6 and had the same issues. I searched this subreddit and saw a couple people expressing issues with the keyboard but no responses to their queries. Is this a known problem with the 6 and we just need to be prepared to use the touch screen sometimes?

Can I replace the Pro 7 kickstand?

I'm asking because the glue from the kickstand strip is failing, i'm thinking this is a part of the kickstand.
Its just a cosmetic issue but i have never had a surface, so idk.
It might be around 50 dollars for a new kickstand but i'd rather be safe and fix it. As it's an eye sore

Ill add some pictures.

ExamSoft and surface pro

I use examsoft for school and after running the application my touch screen on my surface pro doesn’t respond and I have to keep restarting my surface every time for it to work normally.

Wanted to ask does it happen to anyone else? What should I do?
