Just picked up a Penn Fierce IV, 9’ medium heavy, moderate fast action rod. I noticed the rod is a little stiff. I’m new to surf fishing, I’m wondering will this affect rod sensitivity? Do you need high sensitivity for surf rods? I’m fishing New Jersey surf
Hello,
Title is the question. I don’t have 1k to spend on a fishing drone and don’t have a way to transport a kayak. I was looking around and saw the follow being used
Any thoughts on these methods or have some better ideas? Trying to keep cost down as I am new into the sport and already spent a bunch on equipment and gear
EDIT: surf fishing for sharks in the gulf so I need to get bait pretty far off the beach. Casting isn’t an option.
Just a title reads what's bitting from Wilmington up to topsail Island were is the fish this weekend, heading down to ft fisher today was thinking about checking out freeman Park too as I've never been there I need a new PB
Hey all, it’s been a very long time since I had the ability to surf fish and was needing some advice. I just purchased an avet SX 6/3 mc raptor and keep getting mixed intel on line etc. is mono better or back the feel with mono and which type of braid is best? I fully plan on spending hours at the field practicing but open to suggestions since I’ve been so far removed from the sport!
Has been a tough week for us during our vacation. Scratching together a few pomps but then this morning fish were schooling for a solid 2 hours. Ended up with 5 nice Spanish, couple blues, trout (not pictured) and a pomp for the day. Add in another 20+ ladyfish and my shoulder is gone. Tiring but amazing morning! Only takes one day. Keep at it you never know when they’ll start up.
I’ve had some success with jerkbaits like luckycraft and calissa, but they just don’t cast very far, especially if there’s even the slightest bit of wind. When the fish are in close they’re great but early this morning I was fishing the surf and getting nothing, and then I see tons of birds and some sea lions diving a bit past the breaks where I can’t reach. A guy nearby told me he got a keeper near the birds by throwing a fish finder rig with sandcrabs pretty far out. I get pretty bored throwing bait rigs and prefer throwing lures, are there any setups you guys would recommend for bombing a lure out as far as you can? I’m guessing kastmaster spoons would work but I’d love to hear what else you guys use. I’m in the SF area
Hey folks, I am a surf fishing addict in NYC.
In addition to my fishing problem, have other problems as well. My biggest problem is that I have to work, and cannot fish all day.
So, when I do make it out to Far Rockaway Beach which is quite a trek for me, I like to bring all of my gear. I'm typically throwing three chunks of Bunker on three rods, and sitting on my ass and smoking doobies for about 8 hours.
Then comes my other problem, I'm lazy. I don't like to carry heavy things through the sand, especially after I've been drinking beers and smoking doobies and not catching fish all day long, which can be quite exhausting.
I was thinking about getting one of these surf carts, however, I ride public transit on either the subway or the NYC ferry to get to Far Rockaway. And most of these carts are really big.
So I was thinking I would devise a stand-up hand cart, sort of like the carts that delivery guys will use for boxes, but made out of PVC.
I got a couple of the gigantic beach wheels on Amazon, and I'm starting to design what the frame of the cart should look like.
Here's my biggest problem: no idea what I'm doing and I've never cut PVC and I've never glued PVC together, and I could really use expert advice on what NOT to do.
I have a really strong feeling that I am going to buy like 150 bucks worth of materials, then the first time I try to stick two pieces together I will realize that I've made a massive mistake and my design sucks.
Any general tips / pitfalls / advice to share from those that have built their own PVC surf carts?
Also, if the overwhelming advice is do not build, but rather buy, let me know if you have any portable options to recommend. I haven't really seen any that fit my needs that aren't insanely expensive
Was given this hat because I like to fish, I’m new to surf fishing and salt water species though any knowledge would be appreciated
I'm a novice when it comes to surf fishing. My experience is only limited to the few times that I've been when we're on vacation, but I absolutely love. We're heading back to the Port St Joe / Cape San Blas area at the end of June and I want to come a little more prepared this time.
Do any of you use pompano rigs with live sand fleas or do you stick to fishbites or something similar?
I'm curious if these would be worth a try to add you bait to. If bait gets stolen you still have something for them to bite.
I've destroyed the internal lining of my BAFC48 fishing cart I bought in highschool. I've looked everywhere online and just can't seem to find a liner of the correct size. Any tips? Appreciate the help, tight lines!
I am considering using a 10'6 Salmon/Steelhead rod for surf fishing, my goal is to use it for lures in the range of
3/8 to 3/4 oz. I am thinking that this will work for a sort of catch all with smaller spoons, grubs etc.
Any suggestions? I am located on the east coast of Florida and will be fishing from the beaches here.
New to surf fishing with lures. Purchased a hammered diamond jig. Should you attach a plastic to the hook? Any recommendations? Bass, blues, reds
I'm new to surf fishing and what is there in store for me on the east coast of FL rn? Is there any good fish in season right now? Any tips on surf fishing? Thanks
Just curious on your go to, I'm leaning towards suffix 832 in 30lb test but I'm not dead set on it yet.
Is there any good method to keep them on the hook? Was rebaiting them every 20 minutes or so
Got on em this past weekend. Doubled up on the smaller ones. Always tie a teaser!
Right now I have a 10ft & 12ft Penn battalion. Looking for a light weight rod for light lures surf fishing. Mainly for striped bass. Any suggestions? Looking at the okuma sp. What kind of action and power should I ideally be looking for for light lures?
Fairly new to surf fishing. I currently have my surf rod setup with a Dropper rig but I was thinking maybe I should setup a tactical clip so if I felt like walking the beach casting lures or if I wanted to use a rig and just chill I would have the option. It would proceed as follows Braid-Clip-Lure or Braid-Clip-Swivel-Rig. Is this a possibility or should I just steer clear of this configuration? Thanks in advance.
Hey all! Going to be on Hatteras Island the first week of June and am looking for any pointers. Not completely new to surf fishing but definitely not an expert. Planning on bringing a couple of lighter weight (1-4 oz rated) surf rods for mullet/pompano in close. I do have a heavier 10’ rod but since it’s my understanding that drum/bigger blues will be gone by then so I’m thinking of leaving it at home. Never fished the sound but I’m planning on doing some wading for trout/puppy drum/whatever. Is a 7’ medium action rod with a 2500 sized reel with 8 lb line going to be suitable for that or should I go a little lighter? Just planning on some 1/4 oz jig heads with plastic or Gulp for that, anything else I should bring? Is there a common bait setup for the sound or do people mostly fish lures there? Thanks in advance!
I’ve been fishing for 25+ years. 90% of time for trout. The rest I’ve messed around with catfish and stripped bass. Really wanting to get into shore fishing and jetty fishing. I’m the type of angler that can’t have nice stuff lol. I lose and break stuff all the time. I just joined this sub and will be searching and researching but if I were to hand you $150 what would you build or what combo would you buy. Thanks in advance. Will be fishing from Monterrey to bodega bay.
I was getting frustrated that I couldn’t hit the second trough during low tide, just out of reach. Any tips for sending it?
After 3 hard days finally got a real nice fish (36in 12lbs) blue. Lost a few other big ones on sand fleas unfortunately, can’t wait for next spring
