Customized Candles

I am thinking of starting a small business and have gotten an amazing manufacturer who sells great variety of customized candles. When I say customized, I don't mean simple names written on candles, but I mean Candles in shape of flowers, objects etc. So what I want to ask is that will the people of St John's be willing to pay $25 - $30 for such a product? Any other views or opinions are also welcomed.

Anyone else notice that items you ordered off instacart seem to be more expensive the next time you go to buy it?

It seems that there's a way to scam people out of money by adjusting the prices of items and it's infuriating.

Transfer student visiting for the first time ☺️

In January I'll be moving in to Memorial University. I'm super excited, I'm from Brazil and this is going to be a big change for me to be sure. I want to see as much as I can of the town while I'm there. Any suggestions of good places to visit? Just remember I'm a broke college student lol 🙃

IMAX

Am I just getting old or is the IMAX theatre at cineplex insanely loud? I have been to other imax theatres before and never had this experience. Had to walk out of a movie during the trailers because my kids ears were hurting ($100 for a family of 4 btw!). I used a db meter on my phone and it registered peak at 105db, possibly in the range of hearing damage. Also one of the seats was broken, it was like sitting on a swing lol. And now they make you sit through so many ads at full volume before and after the trailers. It was a pretty bad movie going experience, but at least cineplex was good about exchanging our tickets. What are your thoughts on the enshittification of the movie going experience?

Anyone know the story of what happened there? Unable to find much online, but their social presence and website dried up about a year ago.

Affordable driving school?

I am looking for an affordable driving school (preferably St. John's/Mt. Pearl area).

Is Matt's driving school recommended? tried calling them and never went through and the email seems inactive. I've sent more than 2 emails.

Are there any driving school that have classes around Dec. 20 or something like that?

My exams start on Dec. 10 and would likely be a week or more. SafetyNL's class for December is full.

thank you.

Is Party City coming to Galway???

On Google Maps it shows that there is apparently a Party City on Danny Drive with very little to no description, I searched it up online with 0 results, just wondering if any of you know. I am aware that there is one in the East End on White Rose Drive that is already operating.

Christmas Trees

Hi all,

Are there any spots to pick and cut a tree near town? It’s our first holiday as a family (with everyone home) and our baby is finally old enough to enjoy outings and choosing one from sobeys doesn’t really have that magic we’re looking for. ETA: I was initially referring to a tree farm but after reading the comments, I don’t thing nl has one.

I did have a look around online but curly didn’t anything.

Tia!

I'm abandoning streaming services and buying a dvd player because I'm fed up. Are there any decent places left in St John's to buy some DVDs?

Just the title, really. For what feels like a hundred reasons, I'm fed up with streaming services and am cancelling all of them, so I'm going back to DVDs. I'm aware that actual DVD stores are obselete and probably extinct at this point, but can anyone recommend some decent places to buy DVDs around the city?

Traveling to Saint John's in January, am I Stupid?

Considering making a trip for 3-4 days to your lovely little port city in the middle of January, am I an idiot? I've long been a fan of the city's geography and all the colorfully painted houses lining the streets. I am a photographer and would love to take pictures of the town, even if it is covered in snow! My plan for my visit was to explore around town, trying some local food, warming myself at some of your pubs and walking/hiking/trudging through snow to signal hill and the trails out there (recommendations would be welcomed!) . Also thinking of renting a car for a day to explore more of the coast including Cape Spear (would love to be as far east in north america as i can :) Anyways, I'm fully anticipating the weather to be frigid with a good chance of snowfall. I'm not afraid to bundle up and will be fully prepared clothing-wise...but is traveling this time of year a dumb idea? how much snow should i expect?

Cost to Relocate Washer/Dryer and Replace Rusty Electric Meter Box in Basement Apartment?

Hi, I’m considering buying a house with a basement apartment. The washer and dryer are currently crammed into a very tight closet alongside the hot water tank, making it difficult to access for maintenance (e.g., turning off the water shutoff). I don’t even see the shutoff valve in that area.

I’m thinking of moving the washer and dryer to another location in the basement to improve accessibility. I’d like to know an approximate cost for:

  1. Installing new electrical outlets for the washer and dryer.
  2. Replacing the electric meter box, which is rusty..

And any electrician recommendations, please?

I understand I’ll need to get a city permit, which might trigger a requirement to bring everything up to code.

Could anyone provide a rough estimate for these projects or share advice based on similar experiences? Thanks in advance!

Am I tripping or is snow fall really getting “late” in St John’s with climate change?

It’s almost the end of November and no sight of snow anywhere. Growing up the general wisdom was that we get first snowfall end of October or first couple weeks of November. I remember in 2022 as well we didn’t really serious snow until January.

Is it some climate pattern like El Niño or something that I don’t know about?

Looking to buy UV Gel nail polishes

I’m definitely not talking about the shitty ones at the pharmacies. But is there anywhere in this city a specialty store for something like that? Because I cannot find anything. Google is fucking useless altogether. I punched in “ UV gel polish for sale St. John’s Newfoundland” And the first one gave me a link to a website from the Netherlands that’s not even selling polish, but has polish on there for some reason I don’t know what the fuck is up with that page. Two different links for two different German websites. And then the same old American websites. But I do know that we have Canadian websites to do this. But I’m having trouble finding those as well.

So if anybody could see if they can figure out or if they know of a place that sells UV gel polishes and all that stuff I would be greatly appreciated.

Like I would prefer a store, but even just a good Canadian website. So frustrated.

Any churches turned community centres in the St John's area?

Planning a wedding, but don't want to get married by a priest. We like old churches, but would rather our friend be the person to marry us. Are there any churches like this around? Alternatively any nice venues? We already have a reception venue so looking for something not too expensive.

Looking for Cheap, Flexible SIM Card Options for Occasional usage when travelling in Canada.

Hello everyone! I'm looking for a cheap SIM card or basic phone plan here in Canada. I have my own phone, but it’s mainly needed for a relative who will be traveling outside of Canada. The goal is just to keep in touch while they’re in the airports (Montreal airport is the only destination in Canada). For the months they’re not in Canada, we won’t pay for service, as we won’t be using roaming. Then, when they return in 3-4 months we can pay again for the month and use it again for a few days, so we don’t really need data—just something very basic like text and incoming calls.

I noticed Freedom Mobile online has a plan as low as $5/month, but it seems like they don’t have a physical store where I could quickly grab a SIM card, and I’m a bit pressed for time. Does anyone have suggestions for where I could get a physical SIM card with a very basic/cheap plan? Thanks in advance!
