We are currently private to protest Reddit's API changes.

A place to post tools which were created for a specific purpose.

Doesn't necessarily have to be one purpose.

Post specialized tools.

We originally didn't want a lot of rules, because we thought this was a pretty straightforward sub. However, some posts have shown there needs to be a few.

  1. No requests for tool identification. (see /r/whatisthisthing)
  2. Any machine posts should be focused on the actual tool that's being used as a result of the machine. This sub isn't for the actual machines. (see /r/machineporn)
  3. No all-caps titles. A lot of new spam accounts put all-caps titles. These posts will be removed.

My marlinespike collection. Tallship tools.

Thought I’d lay out all of my spikes and take a pic. The two with lanyards on the left are my daily carries - used mostly for tightening/loosing seizings, lashings, and shackles aloft. The blunt end on the first one makes a good hammer too.

The twisty one was made for me as a gift from one of my volunteers. Then there’s a CS Osborne spike which is similar to my primary carry, but a bit more blunt.

The others are C Drew spikes. Antiques. Used primarily for splicing wire rope. The largest is 18”.

Drum Tuning Key & Marching Drum Tuning Key

Used to tune the tension rods of drums. The bigger one is only used in marching percussion which requires high tension because the drumheads are made out of Kevlar.

Induction-heated knife

They use these in the tire industry to cut pieces of rubber during the tire-making process, using either a push or pull cut, sometimes both. They're heated up via an electrical current in a special holder device that you can also use to scrape excess material off the blade. You've heard the phrase, "Like a hot knife through butter," well, it turns out it works pretty well for other mediums, too.
