I am a firm believer that camo wetsuits are optional but I am currently rocking some white fins and an orange mask but am wondering if/ how much people think the fish are likely to be reacting to them?
I don’t have trouble getting a feed, and I am pretty sure there are fins under the Christmas tree, but the mask will still be Orange.
I just moved to malaysia and need some help in getting started in spearfishing. I have no clue on what to buy and where I can spearfish. Can anyone give me some guidance or tips? (googling was a bit unhelpful ) any help will be appreciated.
I‘ll be staying on North/Middle Caicos for a week and will be bringing my polespear along - I‘m aware that I can’t shoot any fish besides lionfish and will be looking for lobster/conch aswell. There are no feasible charters there so I‘ll be diving from shore/kayak. Has anyone did something similar? Also interested in experiences on similar Caribbean islands! ..Conch recipes appreciated aswell ;)
I’m going to be in central NJ for 2 weeks over the holiday break and was wondering if there are any spearfishing spots I should check out, preferably in Ocean/Monmouth County. Any suggestions?
Seen a lot out on the water, never seen this before.

Thanks for watching guys! More to come!
I'm planning to buy a Cressi Tokugawa 3mm wetsuit. If you have it, what's your opinion/experience?
Hi all,
I'm looking for my first wetsuit, and the Cressi Tracina 5 mm checks my needs, but:
For my height and weight I should use an L (or even an M) For my Chest, Waist and Hip I should use an XL (my waist could use an XXL).
Any tip on what size will fit better?
Thanks!
I finally got a chance at a hogfish
I was reading over on r/freediving and they are pretty convinced that you will die if you even think about diving alone. So I was curious, how many spearos are out solo? I'm solo 99% of the time.
Hi Just wondering if there are many people who have taken this up at an older age? If so, any tips? I'm assuming fitness would be a contributing factor to depth and dive time
This is a follow up to a post I made a while back which I have linked.
For whatever reason I decided my first real experience free diving and spear fishing was going to be on Lofoten Island in Norway. I booked it in September and quickly realized I should probably do some training so I did a padi free diving course.
When I made my original post on this sub I was regretting my decision and thinking about cancelling but the encouragement I got here pushed me to go through with it, so thank you all.
The experience was amazing, to start off we did not get any fish. We were looking for Halibut. We came across a few but they were not large enough to shoot. Can I really say I spear fished? I’m not sure. I did practice fire the gun a few times and did some deep dives to look at the halibut we couldn’t shoot lol. We only had 1 day to fish and there are 4 hours of daylight. I was mentally prepared to not get anything. We dove in 7 mm open cell wet suits and other than my face being cold for the first 5 minutes or so it was extremely warm.
Lofoten is beautiful and being in the ocean with views of snow capped mountains is something not even a picture could do justice.
I want to just give a quick shout out to Arctic Spearfishing. The owner Axel is such a cool guy. He was our guide for the shore dive and he gave us some lessons with the gear beforehand too. He took safety really seriously and he was part of what made the trip such a great experience. If anyone is thinking of making a trip up there I can’t say enough good things about him.
I will definitely be continuing with the hobby and one day making my way back to Lofoten to score a Halibut.
TLDR: I picked a really intense first try at spear fishing but had an amazing time despite not getting any fish.

I’m in Australia. Looking to start using weight vest to get some of the weight off my belt so I am looking for suggestions/ experiences.
I am a bit concerned about the slipping down (or up?) on a dive. And a little concerned with safety, although I would also question how many have ever had to dump weight for safety?
I'm looking to take a 1-2 week trip to learn how to spearfish and surf. Looking for places in Central and South America. 29/M, ideally want to experience the "beach" lifestyle in a medium to small town that still has some amenities.
I've been to Costa Rica a few times so would prefer somewhere new and less touristy. I've heard good things about Panama.
Any recommendations for specific places appreciated!
Hello blue water tribe - anyone in Isla Margarita and keen to dive together? Coming over soon, wanna meet locals with boats, freedive and if possible spearfish together.
Is is okay to take my spearing gear with me when flying to Margarita island?
Hi all,
Can someone tell how are the sea conditions for Spearfishing/Freediving near Porto along the year? Is there a time frame when it's not good to dive due to visibility, rough sea, etc?
I'm planning to begin to spearfishing/freediving, but read somewhere that you must be lucky to find good water conditions here, and I don't want to invest in so much equipment for it to be idle most of the time.
Any tips on places to dive here will be great too!
Thanks
Hey everyone,
Posting this in r/ spearfishing too as it's a bit of a crossover post. I'm completely new to freediving and have never done it before. Recently, I was with a friend who spearfishes and it sounded like exactly something I'd like to start. Next year, I'm planning a big trip (6-12 months) in Central or South America. I plan to travel around so can go to several places and find:
- a beginners freediving course
- A beginners spearfishing course/ somewhere to 'get started' with other spearfishers nearby.
- legal spearfishing
- accessible surfing
- Things going on outside the water (music, food, nightlife, mountains/ rainforests)
- relatively cheap cost of living
Would love to hear your recommendations/ thoughts :)
Diving in the PNW in a 7mm wetsuit. I've had a cheap pair of 5mm gloves but they've gotten shredded pretty quickly and my main complaint is that I could never get a good grip for tension with my pole spear. I could only hold it cocked for maybe 30 seconds because the gloves provided no traction on the pole. Anyone know of any 5mm's that also have good grip? Thanks!
Hi! I’ll be in Mazatlan Mexico from Nov 22 - Dec 9th for a surf trip with my family. I would love to get out spearfishing while I’m there if possible. I’m looking for a guide and to rent gear. I’ve tried once before in Indonesia and loved it. Live in land locked Canada so haven’t been able to try again since. Anyone have info on Mazatlan spearfishinf guides? Thanks in advance
I'm having trouble finding the exact legalise of the Bahamas law regarding spear guns. What specifically is prohibited? I understand that spearguns are prohibited but Hawaiian slings are fine. What about a Hawaiian sling with a reel? Is it the trigger mechanism that defines it as a speargun? If so, does that prevent the use of rest tabs on pole spears? I want to put together a sort of upgraded Hawaiian sling, but I want to know how far I can go before it becomes a 'speargun'.
