Yet I hunger for more!

Hello, everyone. Long, long time lurker here and first time poster. It’s a pleasure to meet you all, and I mean that — besides some outliers, I actually found most posts here a notch above what you normally get on some other gaming subs.Okay, enough sucking up from me. What I wanted to say is basically a fact of my current gaming life, ever since getting a relatively well-paid job. See, I grew up poor and buying games (much less subscriptions MMOs) were a big no-no in the household. Basically the *we don’t do that here* meme. I bought pirated stuff. Until I was like 12 or something I didn’t even know there was such a thing as regular purchases. I mean, why would I pay more than $2 for a videogame? $20-$30? Nah, I could feed myself for two weeks with that much cash. You get the point.

So flash forward — I’m now a consumer, and with bigger paychecks comes even bigger squandering. I now usually buy games, even AAA ones. I just never ever buy DLCs (point in case with Warhammer 3, I just [Redacted] .api files to crack them open, and I consider it fair. I’m NOT paying $15-$25 for a few characters, new units and stuff, I know my price point regardless of any “gamer” ethics.). Still, I feel guilty… No, not for buying them, but not pirating them.

This goes for everything except small indie studies and especially one man teams. They’re the exception, if mostly because they don’t earn nearly as much as the AAA giants (and only in the best case scenarios when they break through!) And boy, o boy, have I bought a lot of indie stuff in the last half year alone. From roguelites like Astral Ascent (which has in fact slowly creeped up to become my favourite, even favourite-er than Hades the more I played it and the more I started vibing with its colourful style), to niche gems like Duelists of Eden (one-man team, and he’s truly a sweetie from how he interacts with his fans), to others that have “broken through after years in obscurity like Fear & Hunger (which I’d say is almost popular now). And so on and on, I could go on naming but these are the ones I’d say I’m enjoying the most right now.

Of course, there are devs (indie or not) that leave projects unfinished, don’t deliver on promises and tons of all sorts of bad faith products of all forms everywhere, not just in gaming, but I don’t wanna get lost in whataboutisms. You can spot the ones that are worth it a mile away…or so I’d like to think. Anyway, that’s about it for my rant, comrades. I’d like to see what you all think and what your stance is towards indie games (and I guess piracy/pricing ranges/stuff that influences your eh “philosophy” if I can call it that).Cheers!
