It has been a glorious evening for all four Home Nations in their World Cup Qualifiers - 4 wins out of 4, including a complete humiliation by England.
First, in Izmir, England anhiliated Turkey in a match without much to talk home about. 8-0 in what has been a comprehensive win for Bobby Robson's guys. In the first half, Bryan Robson opened the scoring after 14 minutes, four minutes later Tony Woodcock doubled the score, and Robson made it 3-0 in the dying seconds of the first half to make the score 3-0. But it was a 15-minute rout at the start of the second half to seal the match - John Barnes with a brace in 5 minutes, Brian Robson made his hat-trick, and Tony Woodcock scored his second to make it 7-0. In the last 5 minutes, Viv Anderson made England's eighth to make an incredible 0-8 score. England continue with a 100% record in the qualifiers, and look forward to their next match at Windsor Park against Northern Ireland.
Billy Bingham's boys, for their part, needed the first half to beat Finland. In need of revenge after their defeat in June, the Boys in Green were awakened with a sucker punch by Lipponen to put the Finns in front. Shortly before the half time whistle, the Irish drew level thanks to John o'Neill's header after a corner. In the second half, after an opponent grabbed Norman Whiteside in the area, Gerry Armstrong put the team in front from the penalty spot to make it 2-1 and give the Irish a very important win to fight for qualification.
The eyes of many were set at Hampden tonight, as Scotland faced the European Championship runners-up in what was a key qualifying match. The fans left the stadium in a state of pandemonium, after the Scots beat their rivals 3-1. After a corner, the long shot by the Scottish player was blocked by Arconada, the Spanish keeper, and Mo Johnston head home the rebound to make it 1-0 after half and hour. 10 minutes later, Johnston was at it again to double their lead with a glorious header after Jim Bett's cross. 2-0 at half-time. Spain fought back to reduce the deficit - they found the goal with another header by Goikoetxea after a free kick. The bounce of the ball dejected Jim Leighton and stunned the crowd for the 2-1. In the end, though, the Scots kept the 2-goal advantage after one of the goals of the year for Scotland. Thanks to Davie Cooper, Kenny Dalglish waltzed the Spanish defence to launch a glorious curl shot to beat the goalkeeper and equal Denis Law's 30 goals and become the joint top goalscorer for the National Team. In the end, Scotland go top of the group and put more pressure to Spain and their rivals.
One of the rivals, Wales, needed a win at any cost against Iceland to keep their slender chances of qualification. They achieved it, with a 2-1 scoreline. After a free-kick, Hopkins set the ball for Mickey Thomas to launch a shot inside the are to make it 1-0. A collapse in defence was the start for Iceland's equalizer, after a long shot by the goalkeeper left the front line to run to the goal, and Petursson stunned the Ninian Park faithful. Wales finally scored the winning goal after a cross to the area was finally put in the net to give Mike England's side a much-needed win to face the new year with renewed spirits.
In the re-arranged match yesterday in Division Two; Gwyn Thomas' goal gave Barnsley the win against Sheffield United, to put the Tykes 2 points behind the promotion places.
On the telly.
ITV - Turkey v England (Brian Moore and Ray Clemence), Scotland v Spain (Jock Brown), Northern Ireland v Finland (Jackie Fullerton), and Wales v Iceland (Hugh Johns).
