WHAT IS SGI?
Silicon Graphics (SGI) was a maker of high-performance computers, workstations, and supercomputers primarily focused on 3D graphics and animation. SGI computers have been used to create lifelike special effects in numerous big-name Hollywood movies like Toy Story, The Matrix, Lord of the Rings, and Jurassic Park, where their graphical capabilities excelled far beyond even the most expensive PCs.
Most SGI computers are based on MIPS processors and run SGI's IRIX operating system, though their more modern offerings have migrated to Intel Itanium and later Intel x86 processors running Linux, and are focused more towards supercomputing performance than graphics.

im thinkin' of maybe getting an Indy or a Fuel Or a Visual Workstation (To Play with it and see what OS' the Visual Workstation can run!)
as for the Indy or Fuel, if i get one of those i might use it for indie animations. who knows.
So I went to Europe with my kids and boyfriend and the boyfriend asked me to marry him in Geneva which was lovely but on the way back home, the airport security people in Copenhagen confiscated his BELOVED SGI screwdriver with the red handle. If I could source a new one for him, it would make him the happiest guy in the world. He'd get the girl... and the tool. Anyone have one they'd be willing to sell me? I'm in the DC metro area, if it matters. Happy to pay shipping.
Looking for any updated versions but specifically: 230-E4-bios.zip
I see in the corner of my eye a SGI computer here and there and it makes me want one sooooo bad, but which one should i get? right now I'm thinking of an Indy but is there a better option?
Took 24 hours to render this on my Octane
I've been interested in emulating IRIX for quite a while now, and I decided to search up a guide and try it out recently. However, I've found that the emulation guides are not up to date, with several of the linked files missing. In addition, I see that it does not run like a standard VM, but instead runs in MAME. I have a few questions:
Where can I find a current emulation guide with linked files?
How difficult is it to install software and save the state of your VM in MAME versus, for example, VMWare?
Does it run slowly when performing graphics-intensive tasks, or does it just always run at a reduced rate (even when just on the desktop, for example)?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
Same as title. I've got an Indigo 2 that was stripped of its HDD sled. Is this required, or are there drive replacements that can go directly to the internal connector?
Hi, I'm a fan of SGI systems but can't think of many uses for one. What would be a good model for a beginner? O2s seem to go for cheap, and there's a BUNDLE of O2s on Ebay missing ram, is it possible to chain those together? Is the Indy a better machine for beginners to get into SGI machines?
Hello,
I was wondering if anyone knew much about an Octane 3. I've seen the press releases and I see that there's manuals online, but I haven't seen much past that, and I don't see any videos on it.
I also am wondering how much one would cost in modern day, and if some of them are still in service.
Thanks for your help!
I've not been able to find much information about using SGI machines for Audio Production (as odd as it sounds I just think it's a really cool idea)
I've found Sonic System, and a note saying the Octane's built in sound could turn it into a respectable audio workstation but not much else.
Were many DAWS released for Irix? Are we missing some?
(also sadly I don't own any SGI hardware so this is why it's a text only post)
I've been working with someone to reverse engineer this for about 2 years now (we both had IRL delays involved with finishing it some time ago).
One of the biggest insights though was that mount(1) for irix doesn't work like it does on Linux or BSD. You actually have to hard code in file systems which makes it very difficult for us to add support for new filesystems.
So my first goal is going to be getting a reliable mount(1) command working and able to replace all of the functionality of the current version, then refactor it to remove the hard coding.
I'm still astonished though that they would do such a thing. Strange shit for sure.
Anyone else think of why they would have hard coded everything?
I cannot find any information online how and where to install patches, can anyone help me?
I've been looking for a way to read my PhD thesis docs off the 21Mb "Floptical" disk I archived them on in 1996. Indys had them built in for a while. This post gives some of the details.
Anyway, Ian Mapleson at SGI Depot (as suggested by u/superdefence) to read the disk - he had to do a lot of work to get a working drive, and happily (and to both of our surprise!) the disk read first time.
I'm very pleased, and grateful to the community :)
Hello, I know that this is a thorny issue and that 13W3 adapters for Sun Micros don't often work with SGI's due to the receiving monitor needing to support sync on green.
With my present setup - an SGI Octane with a Dell E1910 LCD monitor I *do* get a picture (so presumably SoG is dealt with) but the colours are incredibly washed out. Like the brightness is turned up way too high (but isn't). Is this an effect of SoG that I simply haven't observed before?
Even tho I own an Octane2, I have booted it going on 20 years. Is this IRIX?
An updated appeal after my post a couple of years ago; I have a single 21Mb disk from 1996 which I'd love to be able to read. I think it was written on an Indy originally. If anyone can help out I'll gladly pay you for your time!
I'm in the UK, I'll cover postage costs of course.
I'd like to find some books about Silicon Graphics to discover further information, but I can't seem to find any. 🥲
Do you know if there is one?
