As you may have heard, thousands of subreddits are going dark (meaning privatized) for at least 48 hours, with some going dark indefinitely, to protest Reddit's API (Application Programming Interface) changes. During that time, people will not be able to view, comment or post on those subreddits.
Reddit has announced that they will be increasing prices for their API services, which allow third-party apps like Apollo to request information from Reddit. Apollo has revealed that the price of 50,000 API requests will go up to $12,000, which was free before, which would be over $20,000,000 per year for Apollo. This would mean that the apps would have to charge a monthly fee to users to keep up with developer costs, or shut down their services.
NSFW content would also be unavailable through API, which would mean that people would have to use the Reddit app to access that. It would also impede moderators' ability to combat serious violations, like CSAM, due to restrictions on third-party tools.
It would also make it harder for moderators to moderate their subreddits, due to changes for third-party tools, which could result in things like longer wait times for approvals and more spam/bot activity.
What's most likely happening is that Reddit is trying to encourage users to use their app over third-party apps that might contain phishing content. The company has also been planning an IPO since 2021, so they'd want to boost use of their own app and increase revenue to prepare for this.
A lot of Redditors are opposed to these changes because the increased prices could kill many third-party apps, which sometimes offer services that the Reddit app doesn't, like enhanced assistance for visually-impaired people. The hope in these boycotts is that the hit to Reddit's userbase will show the company how reliant they are on third-party apps and tools. Some subreddits are going dark indefinitely until Reddit reverses course on the changes.
A full list of the participating subreddits is linked here: https://www.reddit.com/r/ModCoord/wiki/index/
The moderation community has released an open letter on the subject. You can read it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/ModCoord/comments/13xh1e7/an_open_letter_on_the_state_of_affairs_regarding/
I've decided to let the users decide what we should do on r/ShigarakiSandbox. A poll is below on whether the subreddit should go dark or not and if that privatization should last 48 hours or indefinitely until Reddit reverses course. It will last until Sunday and I'll make a pinned announcement then.
I understand that a lot of you enjoy going here to share fanart and other Shigaraki content and, while I personally support the boycott, I don't take the disruption to this community lightly. I also understand that Reddit needs to make a profit, but I don't think that should come at the expense of third-party services that people depend on.
