Shelton: We got it all in various degrees.

**EDITED TO ADD:
This is my fault for not being clear - I actually like the idea of making cota a better street for tourists and pedestrians. I personally think it should be one way and heck, made out of lovely brick and weight limited. I have an issue with how it has been "painted" and "sealed" and it is my opinion that it is not safe, either for pedestrians or drivers.
ORIGINAL POST/GRUMPY TOMAS:
You probably have already seen the slalom that W Cota street has turned into. Be aware, the road lines are not well defined, there's no deflectors, and if you aren't paying attention, you could easily be driving over parking spots, into curbs, or into oncoming traffic.
While I applaud the idea, the implementation is ...well, not great. Plus, isn't there a communications specialist for the town of Shelton? There's nothing I can find in official capacity talking about any of this.
Anyway, drive safe, pay attention to the street during the day so when it is dark and foggy you aren't surprised by the new spaghetti style of driving, and maybe, JUST MAYBE, someone who may or may not be tasked with communicating with the public might actually... do so.
Don't mind me, post turkey grump going on.
Y'all keep, keepin' on!
I hope your day is full of good food, good people, and we all come (or stay) home safely.
Thank you for being a great community to moderate!
Hello! My family and I (wife, daughter (12), son (10)) are moving to Shelton, specifically the Taylor Town area from Olympia. We have spent a lot of time nearby in Union, Cushman and the Olympics and are really excited to connect with the community.
I’m interested in
-resources for learning about the history of the area including any insights you all have,
-suggestions for quality of life,
-tips, things to be aware of, what to avoid, little known places, events, etc.
Thanks for your insight in advance!
Hey y'all. Is Bob's Tavern, the one with the mural of the chicken on Main, queer-friendly slash run by allies slash safe for LGBTQ folks?
Took this while on a walk.
On the plus side, my sugar gum is finally empty of leaves. And so is the gingko.
How are you all?
I can’t say I’m a super big supporter of local business people after the marches several years ago. But I’m curious how people feel about starting a blue list of businesses to support? Frankly small biz is terrible locally but would love to help out those who aren’t bigots.
Does anyone know if there are people buying chantrelle mushrooms around mason county? I found a patch I'm my backyard.
Just a friendly "non political" reminder to please get rid of campaign signs littering the area, tomorrow.
There is no need for all these dang signs to stay up for months.
Heard about this at 9:52 am, but haven't seen anything in the news... Does anyone have any information on this?
Thanks!
Well, two months into the new house (new to us) and this morning we've got a roof leak. Does anyone have any recommendations for local roof repairers?
Would anybody mind sharing on what they pay for utilities each month? If they wouldn't mind sharing the size and age of their house that would be appraised as well. Thanks.
Was driving North on the 101 today, when some individuals decided it would be fun and cool to throw rocks off the bridge into passing traffic. Didn't get a good look at them. Luckily just a smashed windshield. Be safe out there, folks
Go fuck yourself for trying to push your Trumpy cult bullshit on my kid. Wearing your MAGA hat and telling my kid we are “making America great again” fuck you for trying to make a fun holiday political instead of just letting kids be kids.
Kinda sad we got rained out so bad this year. I've got a table full of candy and we've had 2 Trick-or-Treaters the whole evening. It's also my youngest's birthday. On the plus side we only went to a dozen or so houses and the kids filled their buckets because we were one of the few to brave the weather. Happy Halloween 🎃
If you know people who need to learn English, we are rebooting the ESOL program at the OC Shelton campus. We will offer daytime and evening classes. Registration opens mid-November. Let me know if you have any questions! https://www.olympic.edu/academics/transitional-studies/english-second-language-esl
Hello, fellow mushroom enthusiasts. I live in the Seattle area and have been foraging mushrooms in the surrounding areas for a few years now, but have never ventured out far enough to find western matsutake. I’m quite new to this mushroom and am hoping someone might be willing to give me a bit of guidance on where in WA to look for them this time of year. Definitely NOT asking for specific coordinates, just a general sense (coastal areas near Quinault, North of Shelton, etc.). Feel free to DM me. And thanks so much!
TL,DR: TSIA :)
Long version: We've recently moved to WA, and I'm looking for a new credit union. (My current credit union has a branch in Washington, but it's in Vancouver and I don't want to have to drive two hours for a credit union.)
Is there any particular one you love? Or hate and want to warn me away from?
Hey there our wooden arbor collapsed under the weight of a giant wisteria and we want to replace it. Our favorite person who made homemade arbors is retired (off Shelton-Springs road) or at least he is not around anymore. We thought we would make our own from sturdy metal using repurposed fencing materials.
If you have any fencing materials you want to get rid of and help a wisteria grow answer this post or direct message me
Or. .. If you make arbors..... Big ones. 96 inches high, five feet wide.. Direct message me.
Don't buy credits on the AMI jukebox app, they'll skip over half a dozen songs, money down the drain, and still expect a decent tip after taking care of the tab.
And the Walmart exit heading north is backed up a tad. Be aware! This is for October 23rd at 1pm. It may be clear by the time you read this.
Stay safe out there!
It was wild, I haven't seen all agencies respond in code in years, from deputies to troopers to maybe townies. There were 7 cars responding and when we passed the location, the alleged/possible suspect had guns/tazers drawn on them.
It was wild. I seriously hope everyone stayed calm and everything was handled with no injuries.
Also, while I'm asking, does anyone know what happened with the rv fire on 101 north, before the railroad exit? Everyone ok there?
Also, if any of you are the driver in the civic that pulled up next to us at the Arcadia light... that was a crazy thing to see, right?
New to town and was wondering if there are deer hunting areas here? I see a lot of wooded areas and fields but the onyx app shows up as unknown if it’s public or private land. I hunt respectfully to feed my family, not trying to get any negative backlash. Just trying to follow the rules.
This is the follow up to the post I made yesterday about Mr. C. C. Cole and Shelton Gas Company.
Today I took a drive downtown and visited the Historical Society Museum. The Ladies at the desk knew immediately who I was talking about and were happy to provide me with some newspaper snippets kept on file. One of the Ladies even said that she is neighbors with one of Cole's living grandchildren.
Charles Cecil Cole was born on December 25th, 1893 in McLean County, Illinois, and eventually moved to Shelton in 1926, and founded Shelton Gas Company in 1935, which served as a selling agency for Standard Oil.
He was married to Harriet Agnes Wright and together they had at least four children, Robert C. Cole, William Bruce Cole, Edgar Wright Cole and Margaret Virginia Cole. Reportedly they had at least eight grandchildren and at least one great-grandchild.
Aside from Shelton Gas Company and Cole and Sons Inc, Cole also worked as the VP and Treasurer of Lumberman's Mercantile, and was Assistant to Manager DB Davies of Rainer Pulp and Paper, known today as Rayonier Inc, a position Cole would step down from to focus more on Shelton Gas Company.
As u/Tomasfoolery pointed out, Cole served as Shelton's Mayor, serving two terms beginning in 1939. The man was born on Christmas and eventually became mayor of Christmastown.
Newley Elected Cole being given the Mayoral gavel by Mayor Leon Hack
C. C. Cole passed away on September 11, 1975, and according to the Lady I spoke with has at least two living (great?) grandchildren.
All in all I was happy to learn a bit more about somebody who was a fairly influential figure in our town's history, somebody who until a few days ago I hadn't heard of.
City peeps will be voting for two county commissioner seats, don’t vote for Randy Neatherlin.
Randy regularly kicks the City of Shelton in the junk. Does nothing to support City goals/growth. Tons of evidence online but the most resonant was when he said the homeless issue is “the City’s barbecue.”
Also Tom Beben would be the better choice in the other race.
This is important as the commissioners have control of financial support to the City.
I know the majority on this sub are politically “purple” just wanted to share my opinions and if it helps spark dialogue to answer questions.
Hello Shelton, here with a bit of a history question regarding our town.
This last weekend I headed down to Port Angeles for their annual Crab Fest, and afterward went around to some of the local antique shops to do a bit of thrifting, where I found this little coin purse. I had to have it.
But it made me curious, because I had never heard of Shelton Gas Company, or it’s manager Mr. Cole. A quick web search brought me to the Washington State Department of Ecology website. It mentions that C.C. Cole and Sons Inc were potentially liable for a number of fuel spills between 1973 and 2003, and in 2004 entered into an agreement with the department in handling the cleanup of the spill that occurred in 2003, with cleanup efforts carried out in 2006-2007.
Other than that I wasn’t able to find really all that much about Cole and next to nothing about Shelton Gas Company specifically, or any history surrounding it. My guess is that Shelton Gas Company is/was just a company owned by Cole and Sons Inc, but I still find it odd that information about them is scant.
I’m thinking about maybe visiting the historical society downtown to see if there’s anything more I could learn. I also wanted to share what little I could find here and see if any history aficionados might know anything.
Also, I don’t have any evidence for this, but I can’t help but wonder if Cole Road is named after C.C. Cole.
