(I wasn't going to translate the whole QnA session because it was about an hour or two long so just posted Moon's quotes on Custa. But someone asked for a summary of it so here you go. I only selected, gathered, and paraphrased some questions that are worth mentioning and kind of fun. They are not in particular order. Translations may not be 100% correct.)
Q. What happened to SHD in August?
A. We had a tough schedule because of homestand and all kinds of stuffs. We took some rest for about two weeks but our player's stamina did not come back. So we were faced in a situation that a decision has to be made and decided to have a break. If the team was a 12 man roster, I could have given a full break, but since we are not, we were taking rests but not realistically so our form was forced to be dropped. I was not too concerned about August (Countdown Cup) because it was time for a break. If we went for the Countdown Cup, it would have ended just like last year. Last year's PO meta... I did not want to use Hog. I was thinking of making a counter comp, but it was hard to implement because our players were knackered. I took this as a lesson and applied it this year. Although, I did know it will get unlikely to win the MVP if we take a break in August. However, because everyone's focus was winning the Grand Finals, we went for it.
Q. Scrims with Atlanta Reign?
A. Scrims with NA teams were available from 19 Sep and the first team to reach us was Atlanta. There is a person called Danny (I am not sure if he is mentioning Danny Lim, or if there is an Atalanta Reign staff member with the same name) and he contacted us with using translator. I was impressed by the passion and thought Reign is a good team so we had scrims with them. They were well prepared so I thought they can go all the way to the finals. We haven't scrimed against other NA teams.
Q. What was your most focused coaching in preparing PO?
A. I was not too much worried on metas and comps because our coaches are so good at it. I invested more on the mindset of the players because we had to put them back on form and get used to the time difference. I made the players to meditate and implanted the idea we have to win no matter what. I needed to motivate the players and choosing SF Shock was one of the measures.
Q. Have you thought of losing to SF Shock?
A. Of course. We had lots of options to choose. I was Shock from the first place but some other coaches preferred easier options. However I thought we can gain a lot of things by making Shock as our first opponent. I knew it was dangerous, but if we pick Shock, then the whole tournament is in chaos. Everyone else will be broken and it becomes hard to practice. So I thought this was a worthy challenge and persuaded other coaches. I told the players that I was going to pick Shock and they said yeah yeah but when I really called out Shock they said is this right? I guess they didn't know I was really going to do it LOL. If the players were not performing well even just a little bit, I told them we should be doing better than this because we chose Shock. We would have been hard memed if we did not win.
Q. Were all the comps SHD used prepared?
A. Yes. We prepared to counter the western comps in detail. We did not practice rush that much although we thought of running it in Hanamura because it is so good there.
Q. Do you think SHD is weak in 2CP?
A. Who cares now. It is gone. But yeah... I will say we are weak in that mode.
Q. What do you think of OW2? What will happen to the team because of it?
A. I do not know anything about OW2 so there is nothing I can say. I did not watch the 5v5 gameplay they broadcasted in the middle of the Grand Finals because the match was not over yet. I was actually irritated they showed OW2 in the break time and cut off the grand finals flow.
Q. Why do you think Cristiano Ronaldo did not take the penalty and Bruno Fernandes took it instead? (FYI, Moon is a ManUtd fan and they recently lost to Aston Villa)
A. How do I ban this guy? F off..
Q. Did you expect Atlanta Reign to run Ball comp?
A. No. I told the players not to let their guards down.
Q. How did you feel when Erster and diem retired?
A. I was really sorry. They could have played regularly in other teams. I felt if it was wrong to call them to SHD.
Q. What do you think SHD players would have been if they were not pro gamers?
A. I have never given a thought. Fleta keeps saying he wants to run an icecream shop...
Q. Do you check SHD community?
A. I remember a copium post saying we are going to win the Grand Finals because ManUtd lost to Aston Villa...
Q. Do you think Fleta will stream soon? (FYI, Fleta hasn't streamed for ages. He does not stream to focus on practice.)
A. I don't know. I have a wish coupon from Fleta so if you want his stream, I can use the coupon and make him do it for you guys.
Q. Is spawn camping intentional?
A. Yes. I tell players to pressure the opponent to the fullest extent. Sometimes throw by doing this, but I like to make our opponents mentally boomed.
Q. Who do you have most meeting with?
A. Fate, Izzy, Lip, Molly in this order. The rest are similar.
Q. What was it like to see Custa again?
A. Well... I think you better ask that to Custa. I think I have proved a single action has more influence than a word. Anyways, it was actually nice to see Scott after a long time. He is doing really well as a pundit and I am glad to see it. He has talent in what he is doing right now. When I coached Custa in Valiant, I thought he would well fit as a commentator or pundit in the media and so recommended him doing those kind of stuffs for his after retirement as a pro player.
Q. One non-SHD player that impressed you?
A. Fits. He is amazing.
Q. Did you have scrims with Whoru and Develop?
A. Yes. We did practice with them included, but it was hard because we are not in the same place. (FYI, Whoru and Develop have not joined SHD's team house yet) That's unfortunate.
Q. Did you expect the finals to be one sided?
A. I did. We prepared that hard.
Following are some random things he said.
Fleta was in the zone during the PO. He is very smart. I think he is now in the state of reading Lip's minds. He is already there when Lip is itching to use his EMP. We also practiced him to play Sombra to the extent Fleta does not feel pressured, just to be okay and do the necessary things as Sombra. It was to prevent our DPS pics getting entangled.
Thinking too hard is worse than just throwing away EMPs. There was a certain period when Lip was kind of broken. He was trying to build up EMP using scenarios, make a perfect angle. I had meetings with him and told "you are not that kind of a player. don't try to do something special. I like it when you just use your EMPs. doing this kind of things is very unlike you." He was under carry pressure. "you are not our ace so don't get pressured LOL".
Lip played Widow and Hanzo of which we told him not to play. He was appealing for the GF MVP I guess LOL. About the pics players choose, coaches set the guidelines but we let the players to choose freely.
Erster was not very good in scrims in the beginning of the season. I guess his long break from the game was critical.
There are less games, but schedule is still tough. If we go into tournaments, it is in effect the same as previous seasons. We only have to go through hard schedules. I think it'd be better to have an off-time or quarterly divided seasons like the neighborhood (I think he is mentioning League of Legends).
That's about it... Hope you enjoyed.
Hi y'all,
I am a college student (and Fusion Fan *ducks away from chair thrown at head*) who loves OWL. Every six months I conduct a survey asking OWL fans about their favorite players/teams and why. I then took that simple survey data and determined what drove fans to pick those players and was there correlation. I do this so as a community we can better understand why we like what we like and create some level of discussion about fandom regarding OWL. The Spitfire fans have had some of the highest levels of geographical association across the two previous surveys!
I am once again asking OWL fans to help me. It is just a short survey that should take no more than 3-5 minutes. All responses would be greatly appreciated.
