Does Sew-All thread really work for all kinds of fabric?

I bought Gutermann Sew-All thread as my first thread purchase and have quickly started to question if it's okay for certain projects I have in mind.

I thrifted a thick long sleeve top that needs some adjustments, but I have no idea what material it is. Im guessing some sort of wool blend because it feels substantial but as a little stretch to it. Would polyester sew all be ok with thicker fabric like this?

I also have a super stretchy pant (92% polyester and 8% spandex) that needs some adjustment - can sew all work for this as well?

What about silk?

Im really just looking to understand the boundaries of thread like this and when I should consider using a different one! Thanks for the help in advance :)

Any advice for beginners?

I have tons of fashion designs in my head! I have even started to sketch some! But I've never sewn before, so I'm pretty nervous. I have zero experience in this, so I'm open to any advice! If any of you are curious, I want to make dresses and skirts! But since I'm so new, I probably won't be able to make my designs come to life for a while. I only have a sewing kit so far, nothing too special. And I'm trying to figure out what I'm actually going to do now that I have it. Thanks for reading! Also, is a sewing machine required? I see everyone basically uses one.

Can anyone read what this says please?

Hi, sorry, this is isn’t very related to sewing but I didn’t know where else to post it. I’m getting a dress custom made and requested that the boning wouldn’t be visible — that it would be hidden inside.

However, I’m not sure if these directions were written on my order, and I can’t decipher what this says. If anyone with more knowledge of dressmaking terminology could decipher this it would be of great help. Thanks!

Need help understanding what instructions say.

So I assume I would attach the interfacing with less than 15mm seam allowance as that is what someone on YouTube said. So I have the small dots marked on my fabric so I would also assume I stitch 15mm from the dot to the end, just like the diagram? I am a little confused as to what it means by "Clip notched edge of collar to stitching at small dots" Do I cut the fabric from the dot to the bit below the triangle? Also, I don't quite know what I am then supposed to iron.

One on one tutorial or sewing class for a beginner?

I'm a beginner at sewing and trying to decide which to pick.

1)The Class has 5-6 people. Is $160 for 4 sessions. I've taken sewing classes in the past and did not feel like I learned anything because the teacher was going around class helping others and would only come back to me every 10 minutes.

  1. The one on one session: the teacher comes to my home and brings materials. $50 for a 1 hour session.

Altering a Jockstrap?

My partner and I are transmasc and have been on the hunt for flat front jockstrap patterns. We can't really afford to buy a collection of the flat front jocks like those offered by trans owned brands like cakebandit, so I'm looking into trying to make some by hand for them myself. I'm a complete beginner, but I have confidence in my ability to jump into a project. Any pattern recs would be amazing, though right now my main goal is altering the few cheap jockstraps we currently have. Does anyone have tips on altering overly roomy jockstrap pouches? Thank you so much!

How do I install my seam guide?

I have a Singer Heavy Duty that came with a seam guide. I purchased a Singer walking foot for quilting that I use frequently. I wanted to start using the seam guide but I don't see a way to attach it with the walking foot in place. Am I missing something or are these pieces just not compatible?

What is a better way of finishing curved seams?

I love using this technique to finish my seams (fold under and overstitch), but on curved sections (in this instance, the crotch of pajama pants) snipping out sections is the only thing i can think of to let me fold the seam flat. Is there a better way of doing it? I considered bias tape but i’ve never used it before, and i’m worried it will bulk up the seam too much, and feel weird because it’s a different fabric.

(And just because it often comes up, i don’t have a serger and don’t particularly want one)

Serger Recommendations

Good afternoon,

I am seeking recommendations on a new serger. What are the pros and cons of the machine. My budget is under $200, probably from amazon. Currently I have an older Singer brand but its heavily used when I got it a decade ago,

I want differential feed, and possible rolled edges. something easy to thread.

Some of the stuff i use the machine for - to up-cycle knit clothing into clothes for American girl dolls, and for stuffed animals. I also quilt and occasionally sew clothing.

Thank you for your help

I want to start sewing, what now??

After months of saying “sewing would be fun” and the TikTok algorithm reading my mind and showing me people’s super cool projects, I’ve decided that I actually want to commit to learning how to sew.…. But now what??? My ADHD brain doesn’t really know where to start here…

I did a sewing class in like grade 7, but that’s it for experience, all I remember is my favourite word in the world, “bobbin”. I don’t have a machine and there are no shops in my town that offer classes. Does anyone have any advice? Ideas? Suggestions?

Cheers folks <3

Tutorials on blind hems

I checked the past posts and didn’t necessarily see what I was looking for. I am looking at hemming several pairs of dress pants. I know I need to do a blind hem but I am specifically looking for a tutorial on how to do it. A step by step, and also welcome any other good websites for beginner tutorials. I’m sorry if I missed it but I didn’t see a wiki either. Thank you all!

Are flared pants a good beginner project?

I'm going to a concert in a month and thought it would be cool to diy some pants for it, since all of mine are pretty basic and i'd like to look cool for the concert. I haven't sown a lot though, so would flared pants even be a good idea for a starter project? Should I just sew or embroider something on an already flared base instead?

New sewingmachine for wife

Hi everyone, my wife has an old Toyota Super Jeans machine, she really enjoys sewing but has some issues with the machine as it's a decade (?) old by now - she can't get through multiple layers of fabric, so issues making blackout-curtains etc...
I want to get her a new machine, however my budget is quite restricted around 250-300$ (2 500 - 3 000 NOK).

I found a Janome 1522 around 300$ and it's red which is her favorite color so I'm considering it. However, I don't know if the Toyota is a "stronger" machine and if the Janome machine is too weak for her work.
She mostly fixes clothes, blankets, curtains etc.

(I don't know a single thing about sewing machines and sewing...)

Thanks!

Made pj's for the first time.

Recently wanted to do more than just hem things. Found this patternforpirates kids youth pj pattern. Very easy to follow. Child spawn has approved.
