For those who need a reminder, 218 is the issue where Maxine's father is diagnosed with cancer and passes away by the issue's end. A more slice-of-life vignette style, the action is minimal and focuses more on Malcolm and Maxine's struggle to find a super-powered solution to a tragically mundane problem. They try superblood, Rex Dexter science; they exhaust every avenue only for Maxine's father to pass away regardless.
Idk. I just wasn't expecting a relatively grounded story to be told out of the blue like that. I think it went a long way to develop Maxine a little more, and it was nice to see Malcolm support her throughout.
Genuinely great issue, even ranked against other superhero comics.
I picked up like 8 TPBs on instocktrades.com for under $10 each just in case anyone’s looking to fill in gaps. The Ultimate Collections are on there too for a good price.
Legit he probably would beat the hell out of judge death just to say he did. Steal his leg? That's a maybe, but what do y'all think?
Recently made it to 193 on my long journey to devour this series and I'm honestly quite impressed with the way Larson handled the change to Malcolm as the lead.
I knew way ahead of time that Malcolm would take over the mantle and was a little worried about how that might go. In the past, I have found some of the series' 'Bold New Directions' to be kind of clumsy. I was not a big fan of This Savage World or the complete swap of universes, but grew to not mind as the series went on. But when it came to this MAJOR change up, Larson actually put the work in to establish Malcolm as a character all his own. He sort of took over anyway (around 170 I think?), and I just have to marvel at how well it was all handled.
Really excited for what comes next.
For any long-time fans, how did you react to the change at first? What were the fandom's thoughts at the time? How do y'all feel about Malcolm v his Dad as far as the lead of the series?
Has Erik ever mentioned if more backups will go into future Ultimate Collections? There were a couple in volume 1, which was great as they were important to continuity. Will we get more in the future? Still praying for a Freak Force collection :)
I'm doing a reread of everything issue of Savage Dragon on youtube and I thought this issue really stood out at a critical moment in the Dragon's history. Fon~Ti makes his one and only appearance in this issue.
I’m just up rn Savaging my Dragon and was wondering if y’all think they’d be chill like that?
I mean Dragon is a cop and Red is kinda like a special agent so I think at most they’d have a Jurisdiction dispute, but what do y’all think?
Do yall actually call each other finheads or is he just messing with me
Got the savage dragon just sitting up on the vhs
I've been reading for a while, trying to catch up, and recently got into collecting the physical issues but have been struggling to get large numbers at once, and at a decent price.
It has been a lot of fun. I've been a comic book fan for most of my life but stuck mostly to the one-off graphic novels, manga and trade paperbacks. My only monthly comic has been Saga. Collecting Savage Dragon is genuinely quite exciting, digging through back issues, going to different shops in my local area, and meeting new people.
Was just wondering if anyone had any sort of advice as far as collecting. I still have a long way to go (missing around 240 issues). Most shops have an issue or two, but they're either the latest releases (think 250-270) or the earliest issues (usually ranging from #1-to the early #40s). I have pretty much depleted my local shops of Savage Dragon, and it didn't amount to many issues.
I don't go to many conventions, are there better chances there? E-Bay? Anyone here selling off their collections?
Thanks.
How it would work Erik could low Key drop coupons in the current low print run books. Then you need all 4 or even 8 to send off for your special variant #300. I currently buy all the variants/ covers each month to support this title. I know we are looking at a lot of variants on #300. Just an idea….. like others super excited for #300!!! What makes #300 so special unlike Spawn Erik did most of this on his own!!!!! No shade on Spawn that’s also on my monthly pull list!!!!!!
basically who is your favorite main villain? From Overlord,Cyberface, damian Darklord, and now currently Mr. Glum which of the four is your favorite?
My first post here. A buddy got me into Savage Dragon years ago and I've tried to keep up with it when I could. I always try to pick up issues when I find them in the wild (and can afford them) but this one I was able to grab this right off the shelf. I loved that he was experimenting with different processes and format at this time.
I'll post more of my collection another time but just wanted to show this one off.
I'm rereading every issue of Savage Dragon in this weekly YouTube series.
The latest video in my series rereading every Savage Dragon comic.
I'm a screenwriter that's presently fed up with repeatedly being told to homogenize my scripts beat by beat into the formulaic "hero's journey." Having said that, I like to break up the monotony of trying to make profitable art by adapting stories I love in unconventional ways.
I think society has seemingly moved on from standard comic book movie origin stories (for the most part). Because of this, I'd have Savage Dragon already well established in his world at the start of his film.
I'd begin with a COPS style, found footage opening. From the backseat of their squad car, we'd see Dragon and Alex on a routine patrol bantering with the cameraman about Dragon's origin (found in a burning warehouse, discovered he was seemingly invulnerable, became a cop to protect people from the dangerous freaks, and that's all you get). Maybe intersplice this exposition with security footage of Dragon crawling out of the flames. Dragon & Alex would then witness Freaks doing Freak crimes (I'd love to see Dung and Horde here). After said battle, I'd attempt to license the Cops theme song (Bad Boys, Watcha' Gonna' Do) to play during a montage that acclimates audiences to a Freak-infested Chicago (if budget would allow I'd set the whole film in the 1990's).
Although I'd have sexual tension between Dragon and Alex, I'd forego any actual romance in the film. Dragon would have a one night stand with his neighbor Debbie Harris that would result in Debbie being killed soon after in a retaliatory incident, Dragon would struggle with his being to blame for her death. Her mother would hound him.
I'd play up Overlord as the big villain who rules over the Vicious Circle, only to have Dragon shoot him in the mouth halfway through the film. At this point, Chicago descends into chaos as a power struggle ensues to fill the vacuum of Overlord's absence. Braniape, Cyberface and Openface (among other red-shirt villains) would vie for the vacated position of Overlord. Dragon's motivations would shift from trying to take down the Vicious Circle, to just trying to save the city and wipe out as many (evil) Freaks as possible. It'd be like the practical special fx orgy at the end of the film Society. A complete blood bath.
I'd end the film with Dragon being recruited as the leader of Freak Force in the hopes that he can protect even more innocents in the world.
That's my idea in a nut shell. I'd love to hear your own thoughts on how to approach a Savage Dragon film. I truly hope one day a live action incarnation of this comic series is made. It's just too good. Hail Erik Larsen.
I'm doing a video series on YouTube rereading every issue of Savage Dragon and this week is Savage Dragon 1/2.
I'm rereading the entire series issue by issue on my YouTube channel.
