Sambo (САМБО) is a martial art and combat sport developed in the former Soviet Union. Founded officially as a sport in 1938 its origins trace back to the 1920s. Sambo today is an international sport with IOC Recognition and exists under three different sporting rulesets, Sambo Wrestling, Combat Sambo, and Beach Sambo

Before doing sambo I was doing non jacket wrestling styles, but after switching to sambo I have been having trouble completing single and double legs, due to being too far from opponent to not get gripped up. Are there any set ups for shooting singles when being closer/gripping length?
I recently developed tendonitis in both my thumbs from gripping too hard and not resting enough between training sessions. I'm working on designing a product that helps rehabilitate issues like this, as none of the solutions on the market have really worked for me (Finger expanders, grip trainers, thick bars, etc). I can't use the typical grip strengtheners because they cause flareups.
Is this a problem that a lot of you are having as well? Do you think a product that lets you gently rehabilitate individual fingers would be useful? Tell me about your own injuries as well, I'd be really interested to see which are most common for Sambo players. Thank you!
hello everyone I'm f20 yo, would like to start next year any sort of combat sport (all classes are closed for this year where i live), I just wanted to know if you had any advices on what types of workout I could do and if I could have great results with my home gym equipment or not (dumbbells of all sizes, pull up bar, elastics bands) or If I needed to go to the gym. kinda out of shape since I've not done any sports since last summer would you recommend buying a punching bag ? also trying to realign my nutrition so I bought whey protein and lots of vegetables/fruits/meat etc, if you also had advices on that I could take em !
I'm talking about something happening to the sport, some senseless change like what happened in judo, I personally prefer the sport as it is, I hope that doesn't happen
in dagestan i heard that they are many gyms for sambo and combat sambo. but do they have gyms for ARB, hsif, horting? and why are they so attached to these sports
Most time I fight against right handed opponents, but today I kept getting posted with the left arm and didn’t know what to do. Any tips?
This probably isn't the best place to make this known, but I feel really embarrassed after finishing my first class of Sambo. Y'all can have a laugh at me or give me some love, it's all good 🥲
I ate a dodgy Chicken roll 4 hrs before class and halfway through started to feel really queasy. Ended up going to the bathroom 3 times to crap throughout my class and was too prideful to walk out and say I was 'sick.' I didn't want to be disrespectful and leave without finishing the class, so I really tried to stick through it but spent the last 20 minutes sitting and watching.
I feel really annoyed at myself and self conscious. I've done BJJ, wrestling and Muay Thai for 2 years, and my first sambo class at a new gym was a disaster. I'm feeling dejected and reaching out for some love or support, but I know this is the internet so it might be mostly roasts 😂 either way
I’m traveling for work soon and have been looking for a jiu-jitsu place to drop in. I called an MMA place with jiu-jitsu on their website, right next to my hotel. It was a weird call.
He said they only have sambo (website said jiu-jitsu), so I said it sounded interesting and asked if they do drop ins. He said no, all booked, members only.
Any perspective on this? Are drop ins frowned on in sambo? I would love to cross train if a sambo or judo guy dropped in.
I'm just asking because i'm new to watching sambo and i want to know who is in the goat conversation of sprots sambo?
I’m really interested in Sambo but seems like the only gyms are in LA and I wouldn’t able to drive all that way unfortunately. Hoping there is something or someone close by!
Hi there. Back home in germany I did alot of luta livre. When moving to riga to study, I was hoping to find a gym where I could train sambo, especially combat sambo. To this point though, I haven't found a gym. Any recommendations?
Who are the best sambo athletes who currently compete?
I want to try and get into sambo but I have no gym that does it so I want to do at home training. Are there any workouts y’all recommend i should do?
What are the best value Sambovka in UK and how do you know your size is it like judo in terms of height or is it different?
I know there is probably a lot of posts like this; But Im going back into training for the first time in around four years and I've put on a bit of weight since then and if I'm honest, I'm a little bit anxious.
Going to dive head first into it regardless, but I just wanted to see if anyone had any pointers or anything I should know such as how a sambo class usually goes, or whether these things vary gym to gym? I come from a judo background with not a lot of experience in either striking or wrestling.
Thanks and sorry to bother :)
So I’m sure this gets asked here pretty frequently, but.
I currently box. I want to start supplementing my boxing with grappling to defend takedowns and be able to work on the ground because I’m pretty skinny.
My issue is there are no sambo gyms near me currently. So my options are BJJ gym that also offers wrestling classes or a judo gym. Which one do you think would be more beneficial to supplement into boxing and potentially start sambo whenever I move? Thanks!
Hey Guys.
I am Jon. A lecturer in the UK and head of research and sports medicine for GB Wrestling.
Could any UK Sambo athletes/hobbyists please fill out this injury research survey please. There’s a option to pick Sambo as your chose grappling style. However, so far there are hundreds of BJJ and Judo respondents but only a dozen Sambo athletes. I’ll post the link below.
Thanks you in advance!
Historically when did Sambo decide to discard the traditional Gi pants but chose to retain the Jacket/Kurtka?
What is the official reasoning for why shorts replaced them?
Hello all,
I've been working on this Budō Lineage Tree project that maps the teacher -> student relations in martial arts. I've announced some time ago in r/judo , and the gist of it is:
This project intends to provide a community-based approach to trace the evolution of Judo, in particular, and martial arts, in general, by providing:
A mechanism for community participation in building a database of teacher/student relations, that allows public scrutiny and is transparent in the sources used.
A parser that uses that data and converts it into formats that can be used to explore it.
A web application that facilitates the visualisation of that data.
I've been adding features and entries to the database, and recently I've added Sambo to the database; it's still small, but it's in the timeline and in the tree:
https://reddit.com/link/1evznxy/video/jnpj8edxwljd1/player
At the same time I've added the possibility of showing the shortest path connecting two individuals: merely because of the "wow" factor, I've used Theodore Roosevelt Jr. and Vladimir Putin to showcase this:
The dual/symbiotic relations of Sambo and Judo in the USSR make this an interesting addition since it shows that not all paths are necessarily in a straight line: as it also happens with jujutsu styles integrated into the Kodokan, here - even with few entries - we can see that the teaching of Sambo and Judo can be hard or even impossible to differentiate at times, so person A can teach Sambo to B, and B later teach Judo to C.
I thought that r/sambo could be interested in it; if anyone wants to add to the tree, opening issues are very welcome! The main aspect to consider is that sources are needed, but apart from that I would be interested in having more Sambo entries from all countries. All other feedback is welcomed as well, of course.
Note that I know that the tree is currently incomplete. I add individuals and relations as my interests lead me to a certain area, but even those that I add I often only document partially.
My gym used to get gear from Russia and we could buy stuff for a bargain. Because of the current situation this is not possible anymore.
Sambo is really small in my country so no stores carry gear for it. Any suggestions where can I order from, inside Europe preferably so no extra taxes?
I would really want the krepish ya attack jacket, but since the company is Russian, not sure if orders come through? (https://sambogear.com/en/jackets-for-sambo/)
I also know there is an Estonian company (https://budopunkt.eu/en/dsi-fias-kurtka-sambo-jacket-dsi-jacket-red-120-conf/) but the DSI jacket doesn’t look that sturdy and there is no reviews or anything about it.
Any advice is welcome.
Hi to all my Sambo cousins. I come from the Judo world but our club practices with some degree of flexibility and we sometimes practice a relaxed ruleset with leg grabs, leg locks, and all the other good stuff that is typically allowed in submission grappling/Sambo/etc.
I was looking for some online resources for Sambo techniques as we mostly train with the Gi. Could you direct me to any such resources? I love working with unique grips, Georgian grips etc.
Thank you!
Hi everyone,
I have been looking for a while to see if there's a gym that teaches sambo in Las Vegas but I have been unable to find one. We have a lot of other disciplines like krav maga and Brazilian jiu jitsu, basically every single martial art except sambo. I was wondering if anybody knows any place in Vegas that teaches sambo or combat sambo. Thank you.
