Any nerds in Salinas?

I'm looking for some local computer nerds to maybe start up a CTF team and/or do Bug Bounties. Everyone I know can barely use their computers so hoping to find some friends I can relate to and share ideas, code, and hack things together (I will say, legal hacking, I'm not interested in black hats or scamming people)

Ok if you're interested, join the discord https://discord.gg/wv6upkqM

Running Red Lights on N. Main.

I see this guy running red lights at least once a week. Who/how do I report this? Lucky he hasn't gotten in an accident yet.

Good bars/tap houses with trivia in Salinas?

Hey all! I’m from Santa Cruz but have been living in South Carolina for the last 19 years. Just moved to Salinas area off 68 by Fort Ord.I’m trying to establish a go-to spot for when my sister or friends come down and visit or to go grab a drink on a Friday.

I want to find a chill bar or tap house that would be a good place for afterwork drinks or going out with friends on the weekends. I would love to find a place that isn’t pretentious or too divey. I checked out the Sportsman in Oceanside and it was ok… but a bit too much of a dive for me. Not looking for a club/lounge either. Just a laid back neighborhood bar that maybe has decent wings and a good beer and wine list. Dog friendly or with a patio would be great too.

I also LOVE bar trivia. Went religiously on Tuesdays back in Charleston and got to know the other teams and made some nice bar friends. Would love to find something like that here.

If anyone has any suggestions, would love to hear them! Demographics don’t really matter to me. I get along with most people. I am 35 and nearly a full grown adult.

Thanks!

MST meeting (Public Comment)

Hi all, the next MST meeting is November 4th at 10 AM. I sent a public comment to clerk@mst.org regarding the bike rack capacity.

If you also would like to make a comment or use mine as base, there it is:

Public Comment Item #2 I would like to address an ongoing issue with the bike rack capacity on the Bus Line 20 from Salinas to Monterey. Currently, the bike racks on this route are frequently full, leaving many cyclists unable to board and forcing them to wait for the next bus. This not only inconveniences riders but also discourages the use of public transit for those who rely on their bikes for transportation.

To better accommodate the needs of our community, I suggest considering the potential solutions:

Adding Bike Racks to the Back of the Bus: Installing additional bike racks on the back of the buses could significantly increase capacity, allowing more cyclists to board and reducing wait times.

Increasing the Frequency of Line 20: Increasing the frequency of Bus Line 20 would provide more options for riders and help alleviate overcrowding, ensuring that more people can use both the bus and their bicycles without delay.

Dedicated Bike Buses: Introduce specific buses during peak hours that are designed with increased bike capacity. Implementing these changes would enhance accessibility for cyclists and encourage more sustainable transportation options. Thank you for considering these suggestions to improve our transit system.

I hope this comment make some difference, it has been very frequent that cyclists are unable to ride due to the bike rack being full.

Gas stations

New to the area and wondered if there were gas stations that you find are often less expensive than others? Or gas stations you prefer for whatever reason?

Where I’m from, there were a couple in the area that were known for having lower costs, but they were off the main roads. Still, it was helpful to know so if I was in the area, I would fill my tank up there

Reasonable and honest Brake Repair

Hi I have a friend in Salinas who is on a tight budget and in need of brake repair and/or new brakes on her older Ford Taurus.

I see some recommendations on NextDoor, but many of them are a few years old.

Can anyone here recommend a reliable shop with reasonable prices that could check out her car and tell her what's needed + possibly fix it?

Hate to have to say this, but please recommend only shops in safer parts of town as she is an older female who has had a bad experience with this sort of thing in the past.

Thank you!

"Protect Salinas" Mailings

Anyone else got this mailer advocating more money for police?

Police are funded to the tune of 60.5 mil, 40% of the city budget.

Several police officials are on the first (highest paid page) of Transparent California, with a cost of over $400k per person to the city.

And "Protect Salinas" is complaining about a paltry $1.5 mil cut (a roughly 2.5% cut) and the fact that some of these 400k+ managers are leaving?

They say Salinas is in the top 20 dangerous cities. They don't mention it's #20 for overall crime, including nonviolent. The gang wars of the early 2000s have calmed down. Even Chinatown has been largely cleaned up.

Oh and cofounder Butch Lindley is sufficiently cozy with law enforcement to have provided a location for the sheriff to have affairs with his subordinates.

His vineyard, located nearer to Carmel than Salinas, gives him some interest in our City? Maybe so law enforcement managers can keep boning down and the police can have enough money for expensive wines.

(Edit: Oh and when PAL gets questioned about their expenditures, they run away.)

WTF.

(Edit: Nothing against current sheriff Tina Nieto, who has not boned down to our knowledge, as the sheriff thing was in 2020. I know many might have criticisms of her, not saying they're not valid, just that it's not fair to ascribe the past to her.)

Was it some fire that caused it or is PG&E just F'n with us again and again.

Anyone here remember the BBS scene in the early 90s?

I got my first computer with a modem in 1994. I lived in Salinas at the time and had a lot of fun calling the boards in town. Was anyone else here into BBSes back then?

Storage units Salinas area or anywhere in Monterey County

Looking for storage units that are cheap/reasonably priced. Do not raise price within a year, aren't broken into, belongings are safe. People have significant ti me at this storage unit and no issues. Any help would be appreciated. I've been reading reviews and lots of issues at the places I'm finding.
