Hi! My MIL is very into her bulb garden—tons of pretty tulips and dahlias from Holland or something. She digs them all up for winter (she lives out East) and knows what she’s doing.
For Christmas, was thinking it would be a nice gift to find some rare or special bulb she could add to her garden. Is there a nursery or seller in the city who could help me with something like this? Or if you have suggestions for a particular kind of dahlia or tulip might fit for this?
Tysm for your time and thoughts!!! 💖
My gardening learnings have been all out of order in a crazy way. Been fighting weeds for years before I finally started listening to the advice to mulch the beds for weed control.
As I look forward to next spring I'm trying to consider how to efficiently get the mulch my beds will need. Last year I made like 3 trips to home Depot for 30+ 1.5cuft bags of it. Gotta be a better way right?
Also any other advice is appreciated. My gardens are a perpetual mess of ambition, lack of follow through, bold inexperience, and general incompetence. But I still enjoy the process and really like growing produce and herbs I can be proud of.
Thanks for any advice your willing to provide!
Hi, we're going to be moving into our new (to us) house in a month or so. Obv we missed the growing season, but I'm wanting to put up lots of plants for privacy/security even in front of our fence. Any good native plants that could be planted now that would grow well next year? Or does anyone have a specific plant they like?
We don't just want plain shrubs, but I like that kind of sizing to keep ppl away from maybe trying to climb out fence. Then I thought of practical magic and rose bushes 🤔 But I'm not much of a rose gal. Just wondering if anyone has some favorites they've liked that I could still plant now! Thank you
I just wanna know if anyone recognizes this. I’ve been trying to figure out if this is from a diverse seed mix I distributed or a weed. Google imaged searched for it at lest a dozen times with a dozen photos and no ID comes up. So I’m just gonna post it on Reddit
Has anyone in the STL area ever grown peanuts?
I have had luck in the past planting it in Fall, but I sure can't find anywhere that has any in stock. Anyone got a tip? or have an online nursery that they've ordered it from before? Thanks!
I've been curious about it for awhile. I know that it's a commitment, so I want to understand what I'm getting into before I register.
I'd love to hear your experiences with Master Gardener training, especially if you took the course through Missouri Botanical Garden.
Hello! Does anyone else get these sharp burrs in their grass? They are randomly in my front yard when my dog is outside and we have to pull them out of his paw pad with tweezers. It's hard to see the burrs, but we always know they are there when we have our dog out front.
Any luck with getting rid of them? We have been at our wit's end and are planning on using our tiller to take grass up from our front yard.
Found this fella in my parsley, good or bad?
I have an 8' x 4' plot I'd like to put some veggies or herbs in. What do you guys like to do for a winter crop?
I just bought a house in valley park and the soil here is very rocky. I want to plant some native plants, bushes, and grasses in my front lawn but I would like to not have dump a bunch or top soil or mulch down.
How long do ya’ll think it will take to sun dry my cherry tomatoes in this weather?
(Old screen door under, patio screen for windows overtop. 8 hours of full sun daily. Chickens waiting nearby for any failures.)
Master Gardener
Anyone know of any master gardening services that will do home visits? I have two veryyyyyy large grapevines I inherited and I have no idea how to care for them. I also have strawberries and a pear tree- I am struggling to keep them alive but the last owner clearly spent a while on the yard so I would like to learn how to care for these plants! Thanks in advance.
New to the area and having a garden.
A plant that looks like Virginia Creeper has started growing up the side of our house on the bricks over the last few months. It’s already made it like 10 feet up.
I’m just wondering, is this plant harmless or will it cause issues with the brick and mortar? Should I make an effort to remove it, or let it be?
Thanks!
Just bought a new house and I’ll be doing some native landscaping. I’d like to get a couple trees planted this fall and I adore Catalpas! So, are the pods a total nightmare to clean up? Anything else I should be considering?
This is slowly creeping up my tomatoes from the bottom, what is it?
Orange tendersweet to he exact. But still weird and delicious. 🍉
Does anyone recognize this issue? It's only happening to the Roma tomatoes, the other two tomatoes have no problems, and like half the Roma have nice red bottoms. Thanks for the input
This past weekend on my way to a Cardinals game, I passed Ballpark Village which has some flower beds that caught my eye. I took a couple pictures with the intention of using Lens to help identify a ground cover plant at the front of the bed, but didn't have any luck. Does anyone know what this border plant is?
Hey folks, I am a first season gardener and am planning out my fall crops, but I'm not certain I have the ability to do seed starts because I have absolutely nowhere to do it in my house. We have a very small house with sweet cat who gets into everything.
The only two interior locations are our un-insulated sun porch (where I somewhat successfully did spring seed starts because I had a space heater going in there, but it's 90-100 degrees in there during summer), or our unfinished south city limestone murky basement 😂 which has two dehumidifiers going, but it just seems like a great environment for mold on the soil and lack of airflow, and spiders 😂
Is it possible to start fall seeds outside, perhaps there's something I'm not considering? I would imagine little pop-up greenhouses get too warm.
Thanks for any insights. I have to imagine the key for fall seeds is a colder soil for germination that I may be out of luck here with my options.
Hi!
I started some tomatoes and peppers, and everything was going swimmingly until I went on vacation. My plants lost the fruit, and are now growing, and flowering but no fruit is coming. Is there a fertilizer/method I can use to help get some harvest off these guys?

What are you all doing to deter squirrels? They’re on an active mission to ravage my Cherokee tomatoes. Before I do absolutely everything and buy every deterrent supply possible, what are you doing that’s actually worked? My dog has done his best, but it’s too hot for him to be on patrol at all times.
