A place where STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) students specifically can talk, help each other, share their experiences and endeavors without the professional strict feel of some other science subreddits, we're all students after all. Vent about how many times a day you want to die when you look at your course-load but don't because your subject interest gets the better of you.

Rules

  • This is a safe place: no slander of any kind, everyone has rough days.

  • No bashing on people for their area of study (not even underwater basket-weaving). I'm tired of the stereotype that we all think that humanities and other things are useless. However, if you need to vent about how you hate your philosophy class because you don't get it and it frustrates you that's fine, just don't hate the field.

  • You don't have to be a STEM student to ask questions or seek help with something related to a course you're in. However, if it's a really deep complex answer /r/askscience may be what you seek but ask anyway!

  • Pictures must be somehow related to the subreddit, if you wanna show off your schools engineering building feel free but we don't need silly unrelated things like a picture of your new cat, unless you made the cat....

  • Just be contributive, helpful and enthused and we'll all be fine.

  • Don't Panic.

Canisius vs. SUNY Oswego for Undergrad?

I could use some advice about Private (Canisius) vs. Public (Oswego) colleges. If anyone has someone insight into my questions, or even just general advice (never know what I could have overlooked) that would be awsome. I have questions and some background down bellow.

Note: Please keep in mind that my end goal is to go to grad school and research Animal Behavior and/or Conservation.

Questions:

The big one: Would Canisius be worth going into debt(<$5k) for vs. still having quite a bit saved up after Oswego?

Would Canisius have better/more available research opportunities?

Is it going to be hard to get research experience at either college? (I heard it is a bit harder to get into opportunities than at community college)

Is the quality of college and/or opportunities really any different?

How do I find what kinds of research is being done at the colleges? (Their websites haven't been very helpful, especially Oswego)

How important is quality/variety of housing/food?

On vs. Off campus? (Mainly asking for Oswego)

Suppose grad school didn't work out after undergrad, would that change which college would have been better to go to? (Minor question)

What about summer opportunities?

Is there a better "college experience" at one or the other?

Would one over the other help me getting into grad school more?

What else does it seem like I'm missing or not considering?

Some background: I'm graduating from community college this semester and I have a couple weeks to choose between the Animal Behavior, Ecology and Conservation B.S. at Canisius College or Zoology B.S. at SUNY Oswego.

I have my financials (tuition/fees, housing, food, and transportation) worked out where I would be <$5k in debt (at worst, still broke but no debt at best) at Canisius (I have been working and saved up quite bit). If I went to Oswego I'm not sure how much it would cost bc I would be relying on the Excelsior Scholarship (I would have over $10k left if I got it, ~$5k left if I don't), but I'm iffy about it bc the application isn't even open yet and I've had problems with NY State financial aid being restrictive in the past. Plus I would be required to stay in NY for 2 years after graduating if I got the Excelsior Scholarship.

I would be living off campus for both if them. At Canisius I already know where I would stay, but would have to find a place at Oswego.

My end goal is to go to grad school and study Animal Behavior, so Canisius is more along the lines of the type of classes I want for my main goal. Oswego has interesting classes as well, but they're more the type of classes that would be helpful for my backup plan if grad school doesn't work out.

The big thing I have been told to focus on is what research is being done at the colleges and go for what I'm more interested in, but I can't even find what's being done at Oswego (maybe I'm not looking in the right place?). The research at Canisius is right up my alley, with students researching the behavior and cognition of various animals.

I have been told that research experience is very important for grad school applications, so I'm mostly concerned with what kind of experience I can get. I did do 2 research projects/internships at the community college, but I'm concerned if I will have a hard time getting into research since I'll be 2 years behind other student in networking wolith professors.

A con for Canisius is that it would be harder for me to get some free time in nature to unwind compared to Oswego. It is somewhat appealing to see what it would be like to go to a big college, but it's not like I would have money to enjoy loving in a city anyways.

Even while I'm writing this, Canisius is seeming more and more like the way to go, but I would appreciate any opinions on the matter.

I’m a Biochem major and a degree in business is looking real sexy right abt now.

I’ve been a pre-med college student for abt 2 yrs now (4 semesters) and I am having breakdowns on the regular and the burn out is unbearable.

I used to love the life sciences and learning about bio and chem, but now attending any stem class feels like a chore and I hate it. I feel as though I’ve lost all interest in biology and medicine, and just thinking about doing the same shit for the rest of my life makes me wanna curl up in a ball, and die.

From yall’s experience, Is this just a phase that goes away, or is it time I consider a major change? And if you’re in this same situation but sticking with it, how tf are y’all coping/managing it cause I’m on the fuckin verge🥲

Are you a student? And want to enter a raffle to win one a $50 Amazon Gift Card? Take this survey about confidence and personality in academia!

I am currently conducting a study as a graduate student at Lipscomb University. My study is directly about students and confidence in all levels and types of academic settings.

If you are a current student and have 13-15 minutes to complete this survey please do! This study is looking at personality and confidence in academic settings. You will be asked to respond to a series of questions related to feelings in an academic setting/as a student and take a personality test. Your responses will be kept confidential. You must be 18 years or older to participate in this study and you must be a current student in any level of education or program type. It will take around 13-15 minutes to complete and by participating you can enter into a drawing to win one of three $50 Amazon gift cards.

I am very excited to be researching this and responses would help a lot! :)

Thinking of an astronomy related minor in college, stuck between astrophysics and planetary science

Hello everyone! Sorry if I am barking up the wrong tree here but I start my college journey next year. I have decided to major in aerospace engineering with a focus on astronautical engineering, and I’d like to have a minor degree to back myself up.

I am stuck between two astronomy-related degrees, astrophysics and planetary sciences, both of which I believe are minor degrees at the main college I am looking at.

I am incredibly fond of how things in space work, how the celestial bodies function, but I have an interest in planets since we will likely explore them more (we can’t send space probes to the stars yet, no?)

I spoke with my advisor and she said astrophysics is a great choice for what I am doing, but planetary sciences, while not related, is easier according to her (not sure if it is).

What do you think? Thank you

Edit: I chose not to major in either since most people who have degrees in both end up becoming teachers or professors, which isn’t something I see myself doing

I’m stuck.

I’m a STEM student, sophomore in college. I just don’t know what to do. Biology is my major and I’m also interested in psychology and I’m using the extra classes I can take to take extra bio and psych classes, is there anyone that has any idea of what pathway I can/should take?

Trouble deciding on how to continue my education

I graduated with a bachelors in business administration in marketing in December 2022 but with the job market being horrible and marketing being the first department usually cut it feels unreliable and I regret choosing that as my major, I have since been deciding between returning to school for a Bachelors in Computer Science OR a masters in Data Analytics. Both intrigue me but I’m not sure which path to take. I have registered to begin the bachelors In CS in the summer and if everything goes according to plan I should be done in about 2 years. However, I had already applied to Georgia Techs online Masters in Analytics program and just received my acceptance letter, the masters program will take about 24-72 months (self-paced). I feel like I am being drawn to one path more than the other but I would like to hear other’s opinions and thoughts on what I should do to make a more educated decision.

The Codebotics class at the Renaissance Youth Center created Smart Glasses for the visually impaired, using the Arduino Mega and ultrasonic sensors. This is an upgrade from the previous project, the Walking Stick.

Thesis survey (please help I'm desperate)

Hi everyone,

For my graduation project, I am aiming to research and identify how a gender-inclusive buddy program and built-in activities empower and advance women in STEM. The essence of the solution is that in STEM-related workplaces, buddy programs are set up between men and women in an office to address the systemic challenges of advancing and elevating women in STEM. In addition to the buddy program, there will be monthly or bi-weekly activities, seminars, workshops, and exercises that are meant to teach, inform, and put into practice how men can be better allies for women in STEM, and also how women can advance their own careers and practices.

The solution still needs to be fine-tuned, which is why I need your help. I currently have a survey out to get the opinions of men and women in STEM . I need lots of respondents and I'm not there yet, far from it to be perfectly honest. I would appreciate it if you could take five minutes of your time to answer my survey, I believe the foundation of this idea works, and with your feedback, I could make it better! Thank you in advance, I appreciate it.

Please note there are two surveys. One for women to fill out and one designated for men.

I'm really desperate out here so I'd appreciate it if you took five minutes out of your day to fill this out.

My thoughts of continuing education are dead right now..

I returned to school after 10 years of being out and went into a STEM field (Medical Laboratory Science w/ plans of attending PA school) and I swear I don’t feel like the stress is worth it at this point.

I was kicking ass my first few semesters (back to back 4.0 semesters) and I’m currently in Gen Chem II and it is ripping me to shreds. Idk wtf is going on.

Help is filling out a form for a scholarship an engagement for an internship?

Hello, as I said I am currently an undergraduate student in the faculty of science. I applied for three research internship in a laboratory under the supervision of a professeur. One of them answered me and accepted me and I am still waiting for the response of the other 2. The thing is that the professor that accepted me and agreed to welcome me in her laboratory asked me to fill out a forum for scholarship and the deadline is tomorrow. Since I still didn’t receive the answer from the two other internship, I was wondering if filling out this form is an engagement and if i can’t back off from the offer in the futur if something happens and another insternship accepted me? Thank you and p’ease help me or advise me on what to do

[Academic Survey] Mathematic Motivation for Students in the United States ( Demographic: Middle School, High School, and College Students in the US)

Hello! I am a high school student and I would be really grateful if you could take this survey regarding mathematic motivations! This is working towards an AP exam in May for a course called AP Research within the College Board. It should be quick and easy, time varies depending on the length of answer you choose to provide! I need to receive about 700 responses by early March!

Please spread this survey if you can and if you are comfortable with it, friends or family anyone will really help. Thank you so much for your time!

How can I develop a STEM mindset?

Hi! So throughout my school years, I’ve never been good at maths and never studied physics or chemistry. Since starting college (pursuing a non-STEM degree) I would like to obtain knowledge about STEM subjects. I figure the best place to start is my school textbooks? Any tips on starting out is appreciated!
