Stink Bugs

has anyone else had problems with having lots of stink bugs lately? I have killed so many. I have nothing out that would attract them and keep my room clean. What have you guys done to keep them away permanently? I thought it might be from a crack in my window and got tape just now. Anything else?

Looking for advice as a foreign student

I recently got my visa and I will be attending Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. I don't know how things are gonna be but I hope it's gonna be okay. I still have 2 month to go and I am from Nepal. I am not sure what other step I need to take, I don't have anyone I know there so I don't know how I will adjust.

I also what to know about the living expenses on and off campus and how that works as well. Looking for guidance.

Does anyone know how much it costs to replace a lost room key? My son lost his room key and key fob to his car last Sunday. No one has turned it in yet.

Resume & Interview Survey

Hi everyone!

I am an HR professional in The US (Midwest) and I am hoping to connect with recent college grads (1-2 years out of college) or soon-to-be grads on the topic of resume writing and interview preparation.

I have a survey below of some questions and would appreciate feedback if anyone wants to share answers to some or all questions below. Feel free to reply on the thread or answer in a DM if you prefer.

Thanks for your time!

Resume Writing and Review:

1.      What resources did your college provide for resume writing assistance?

2.      Did you use these resources? Why or why not?

3.      What was most challenging for you when creating your resume the first time?

4.      Did you create your resume on your own or was there a class assignment that required you to complete one?

5.      If it was a class assignment, what feedback or guidance was given about your resume?

6.      How confident did you feel about your first version of your resume?

7.      Did you use AI to create your resume and/or cover letter?

Interview Preparation:

8.      How does your college help students prepare for job interviews?

10.  What additional interview preparation support would you find valuable through your college?

11.  Think about the first few interviews that you completed. What were you not prepared to answer? Where did you feel the least confident? Where did you feel the most confident?

14.  What was your experience like at these job fairs?

Job Search Process:

21.  How do you typically search for job opportunities?

22.  What has been your biggest challenge in finding relevant job openings?

Needing Advice

So I need some advice. I'm heavily considering going to SIUE for a Bachelors in Business that's focused in Finance. The admissions said they have a great Business program and all of that, and it seems like I could be accepted pretty easily to the school.

My own concerns are mainly... has anyone else been a part of the Business program? Did you feel properly prepared for the kind of career you were wanting to go into? Did the school have proper resources to help you get a good, solid job soon after graduation?

And a little less pressing but still something I'm curious about - what is the student culture/life like on campus? Are there events/clubs to join? Have you found it easy to connect with other students?

Some of these questions will help me decide where I really want to go, because I'm also thinking about UMSL and SLU considering that I live in the STL area.

is family housing worth it?

My fiancé and I recently got an apartment available for us through family housing at cougar village. I took a quick check on the price again (around 6,600 per semester.) is it worth it? am I making a mistake? I don’t have much debt with the rest of my tuition because luckily it got paid for through grants. Now we’re looking at taking a loan for just the family housing alone. What do yall think?

Will advising and administration ever improve?

I want to preface this by saying I am partly just here to complain due to grievances.

I have dealt with a lot of issues at this school, particularly with advisors and the administration, such as courses I took at the beginning of my undergrad suddenly no longer applying toward my graduation despite initially fulfilling all requirements. Or, being promised verbally and through email a course I took would apply toward my requirements due to the curriculum changing midway, and that despite my advisor finding out it wouldn't he promised to override it at the end of the semester (he couldn't even do this and never did, I had to beg the school to accept the credit).

I know, I know, advising is bad everywhere. I believe, however, SIUe would be a pretty fantastic school if administration and advising wasn't downright horrendous, so it just makes me wonder why the school has been unable to improve in this area. With all the administrative troubles and unique ways I've been nickle-and-dimed at this school, I am not particularly excited to enter into my last semester here and I simply feel like it's too late for me to transfer so I am just trudging along and awaiting the next issue that is going to inevitably make life harder.

It seems the affordability of the institution comes at a cost. Beyond my grievances, I do enjoy the school academically and the professors. It's not too stressful/unreasonable and it's not too easy either. I'm wondering too if this stuff is just an inevitable symptom of higher ed institutions.

Where to report pests in dorm rooms

My son called this past weekend and said he had a brown recluse spider in his bathroom. I figured it was a wolf spider and he was just assuming it was a brown recluse. Well today he saw it again, caught it and took it outside and let it go (You just have to know my son. I would have stepped on any spider in my room! But he’s just a kind soul to every living creature!) He took a picture and I’m afraid he’s correct! Where should students report pests in their dorm room? For now I guess I’ll order him some glue traps?

Boss Burger switched to crinkle cut fries

The fries (when they weren’t raw) were all they had going for them. No way I’m gonna get a nasty hours-old patty if I can’t at least wash that slop down with fries. 0/10, can’t recommend.

MBA electives?

I am finishing my MBA online with SIUE and need one more elective. I'm looking for suggestions for courses that are mostly individual work and not group assignments. The finance course was like that and I preferred it to the courses with regular group assignments.

1 Week at the SIUE gym

Tomorrow marks the one week anniversary of my first time at the gym. Let me start with love. The facility is great. Nice machines, plenty of courts, and a good plethora of equipment. But some of the hospitalities is leaving a lot to be desired.

I usually bring my water bottle any time I hit the gym and fill it at a station. The first day I went on a hunt for a station. The most accessible one near the entrance has a yellow filter status. I don’t know about yall but I’d prefer not to drink that. So my search continued, I ended upstairs by the other set of cardio machines before I found another station. Luckily this one had a green filter status. Warm water but a good status at least.

Today I’m at the gym around 6pm to let off some steam only to be met by a young student TELLING me “past this point water only”. This hasn’t happened any other time I’ve been. As usual I have an empty bottle with me. Caught off guard I genuinely asked the question “we can’t have Gatorade”. We had a back and forth out of my confusion and his assertion. He never asked me “what’s me what was in my cup”. He thought I had Gatorade…it was empty.

So my tuition dollars are going towards a facility which:

  1. Doesn’t have the decency to have fresh water filters in the stations AT THE GYM, AT THE START OF A NEW SEMESTER

  2. A water only facility. Mind you they sell Gatorade at vending machines in the fitness center. SO YOULL TAKE MY MONEY, but I can’t replenish my electrolytes while working out???

  3. Have a little twerp telling me it’s water only facility. Instead of simply asking me if anything is in my bottle.

I don’t mean to be a jerk but we’re paying for these facilities and I feel like our voices should be heard and acknowledged. 🤷🏾‍♂️

P.S. I asked someone behind the front desk if the filter can be swapped. She told me she would leave a message for whoever is above her.

I’m curious how long it will take to be replaced.

Can my friend and I play music in the quad?

My friend and I have had a duo band for a few years, all acoustic folky stuff so it's not loud or anything, and I was wondering if it was allowed for us to perform in the quad if we don't have class. I figure if the whack job preacher can tell us we're all going to hell for 5 hours straight we can play some music for 45 minutes right?

So what's the rules about the rock?

I see that it's painted with a frat or something and don't want anyone to get too offended if my cohorts and I paint over it. Is there a certain amount of time acceptable to paint over it?

Parties?

Are there ever any parties at SIUE? And what are they like? I’m new to SIUE and college life in general, but I’m a little interested in stuff like sororities and stuff. Was just wondering how people even hear about them.

Guitar on campus?

Is there anywhere i could play my acoustic guitar on campus? It’s not super convenient to play in my dorm because i’m afraid i’ll be too loud, so it just feels easier to not play at all but I’m afraid i’ll end up dropping the hobby. Is there anywhere on campus, like a place outside or a music room, that i could go play in? Just moved in btw😭

Cougar Village mailing address

So, this is probably a stupid question, but I was going to order some packages for my room. The only problem is, I don’t know how to address the package, because when I watched the tour video, the guide said packages would be dropped off at the front desk. So do I put the address for the Commons Building or my building? And what would that look like?
