Does biathlon require greater aptitude to riflery or skiing?

I am too tall to ever be a truly good cross-country skier. However, I am a good shot, and I have fair cardio (which I could of course make good fairly easily). Would it be possible to compete? I know the rules, but in the experience of those who know more about biathlon, is one more important than the other?

Please help with my PhD (questionnaire)

Hey guys!

I need some help with a questionnaire for my PhD. I need a sample of precision based athletes such as those that do shooting based sports. Takes around 10 minutes, so will be very appreciative for anyone who can help. Thanks!

I really enjoy shooting unsupported, 3 position style and have some questions about building a rifle.

I've been shooting most of my life and after attending some appleseed shoots (patched) I've really gotten into 3 position style shooting. I'm not really interested in competing, I just enjoy this as a backyard hobby. I've built up a handful of 10/22s for specific use cases and I'm now working on building one specifically for unsupported positions, I'm having a heck of a time finding specific info on building this rifle though.

  1. Where should the balance of the rifle be? I know with many rifles the balance point should be somewhere between the two hands, a few inches in front of the trigger so as to balance it when bringing it to the shoulder. Since this rifle really won't see this kind of action, should balance point still be in the same place or should it be further back to relieve some of the weight on the front hand?

  2. I'm definitely planning to add some lead to the stock to increase the weight and since I'm not planning to compete, there aren't any limits on how much weight I should add but I'm assuming there's a sweet spot between inertial dampening and fatigue. So, what should I be targeting for weight?

I see this sub isn't too lively, is there a better place to be asking these questions? Thanks!

Izhmash 7-4 NCAA Small-bore Interest

I am looking to get into the NCAA smallbore sport "field". I have done target shooting in the past (in my earlier teens) but now that I have a small-bore rifle handed down to me, I want to practice and possibly use my hand-me-down Izhmash 7-4 to qualify for NCAA small-bore rifle. My only question is.

Could I even use this rifle for the NCAA tournament.

I have read into the rules, but cannot definitively say that I can. From what I have read the stock needs to be "thumb-hole free" which it is. The 7-4 is within the weight limits, or at least mine is if my scale is up to par. I really could just use an extra set of eyes to look over the rules to make sure I don't practice on a single platform for nothing (or form any bad habits). Just to add a little more detail and back story, I live in NC and wish to "get good" enough at small-bore target shooting to compete for NC State in the near future using my 7-4. It is my only firearm, and as a college student, funds are pretty limited to purchase any kind of target rifle.

Hotshot Barrels review

Hey guys, was browsing red today and came across a guy asking about a company called Hotshot Barrels so I decided to post my experience with them.

I grabbed a lightweight from them during their "Mother's Day sale", hahaha most random sale ever IMO. I saw them through Instagram @hotshotbarrels a really good holster maker SavoyLeather shared his ad. If Savoy trusts him enough to share his sale I figured I would give it a shot. Barrel was delivered quickly, packaged nice and safe as well. Has been everything I wanted, finish was nice, shoots good. Apparently they give a money back guarantee as well but I didn't need it. We need somebody to test the warranty deal to see if it's legit but I need mine haha www.hotshotbarrels.com is their site

Help me find a scope for my new bolt action .223.

First time with this caliber and I know I need far magnification to zoom in on the smaller prey but I don't want to spend more than 200 on the scope. (rifle overall is 375). So any suggestion help. It's gonna go on a Ruger American Compact and I would like to have larger than 40mm objective but not a necessity. 6-18x50 would probably be best.

Looking to learn more about rifles.

So I've been looking into some rifles and information on rifles. Specifically bolt action, long barrel. Something below $800 synthetic with scope.

What makes sense for a first time learner/buyer of a rifle. Can anyone provide some helpful links or youtube tutorials, for lets say learning the difference between certain types of guns, cleaning, and proper handling.

I live close to the NRA headquarters and will most likely be taking classes there. To be honest, I'm completely new at this, but am interested in making my way to a new purchase and learning everything about rifles.

I included some rifles below that I thought would be ideal for a first run. Does this seem reasonable or a little bit out of my league as a first timer?

Kudos and compliments to Bob Jones Sights.

I shoot my AR5 for XTC with a Bob Jones lens in the rear sight, and let me say that it makes a surprising difference. The point of the lens is to make it easier for the shooter to focus on the front sight (like you're supposed to be!) and make it very hard to focus on the target. While I don't know how much it helps at the short lines, this simple change put probably 5 points on my 600 game.

Anyway, the point of this post was to commend Bob Jones on not just his product, but also his costumer service and commitment to excellence. I recently purchased a second lens for my backup rifle. However I accidentally ordered the wrong one. I promptly sent Mr. Jones an email asking how I should go about exchanging the lens. I response, I received the correct lens via first class mail and an apology for my stupidity. He simply asked that I mail the incorrect lens back to him, noting that the exchange would be free of charge.
This is exactly the kind of outstanding character and sportsmanship that I would love to see everyone show in shooting sports. Highpower, as with many shooting sports, is a tight knit community, and that fellowship is only possible through such great trust and generosity as this. Mr. Jones extended an unnecessary courtesy to me, and I would like to thank him for it before I talk to him again at Camp Perry this year.
