I didn't know how long this has been going on, but even in catalogues from 100 years ago I find paint for painting furniture advertised, even occasionally pre-painted furniture being sold. The August 1930 issue of Building - Decorating - Maintaining Your Home magazine advises dear reader to paint, then sand outdoor details of the home to give them a rustic look. What disturbs me most is that these painted furnitures of the past are virtually never seen, long since beridden in favor of the furniture with stained finishes preserved.
This is an unusual post and does not fit the flair, but I don't see why it wouldn't be allowed because it is entirely on-topic.
