Software development on/for retro systems

Making DOS games?

NES games? Spreadsheets for the C64?

Retro software, but focused on the development side. IE, links to newly developed retro stuff, or articles about how to write software for/on retro systems.

FYI: Self promotion (IE, linking to your own blog/video/game/etc) is perfectly fine here.

Who are the best publishers for homebrew NES Games?

I am finishing the edits to my book "Classic Game Programming on the NES" and have included both a list of suppliers of PCBs and shells for those who want to self-publish and a list of publishers.

And of course, any suppliers of PCBs and cartridge shells would be welcome.

The publishers I have so far (in alphabetical order):

  • Collectorvision
  • Limited Run Games
  • Retro-Bit Publishing

Who am I missing?, I am sure I don't have them all.

And of course, any suppliers of PCBs and cartridge shells would be welcome.

We’ve shown some development platforms before, including BASIC. But now we’re going to do some BASIC programming on a console that doesn’t have a keyboard

Sega Saturn Programming

Hi there,

Can't find anywhere a reliable source for Sega Saturn programming. Anyone has any clue on where to look and what to look for?

Thanks!

Advice requested

Hi all, i'm currently trying to make a simple SNES game using libSFX and struggling to get more than 2 sprites on-screen.

Can someone take a look at my code and tell me where i'm going wrong?

When I add a third sprite, or if I just use sprite IDs 1 and 2 instead of 0 and 1 for my mario and luigi sprites, I get weird flipped sprites etc which suggests to me OAM is corrupted somehow - any thoughts?

Alternatives to the Famicom Data Recorder?

Hello! I'm looking to port GeckOS to the Famicom as a student project. Most of it works (using the FC keyboard and a flashed cartidge), I just need a way to properly write data. To my understanding, there is not a way to rewrite the ROM (hence the name) live on the cartridge. I'd rather not use a flashcart, I would much prefer it to be something that can be run from a "real" cartridge. I also don't want to use the FDS, as it's not compatible with the NES or Famiclones. This leaves me with pretty limited options. Is the Famicom Data Recorder my best bet? Is there some kind of hardware clone? From what I understand it's just a tape recorder with a 3.5mm in and out to write data from the jacks on the FC keyboard. Thanks everyone, cheers.
