RA Interview Feedback

I was interviewed for the RA job by 2 ACs and I didn’t get the job. After the interview ended, I was sent an email by one of the ACs who asked if I would meet with them to get feedback on my performance.

Does this mean anything?

I want to be an RA so badly

Hey! For current or past RAs, what are some tips you have to possible be offered a role as an RA. I applied last year as a freshman and was rejected due to over 900 applicants. What can I do to stand out?

I took a job as front desks of dorms, am in a sorority and clubs and also filled out the application the day it came out and updated my resume.

Any tips would be very appreciated!

I’m too shy to be an RA

I just got a job as an RA, to replace another girl who was abruptly moved to another building. Since I was brought in late in the semester, I feel like the girls on my floor won't have enough time to get to know me. I'm excited and happy to have this job, but I'm very introverted especially compared to other RAs who are extremely outgoing. I'm especially worried about getting enough intentional interactions. Any advice on how to be less shy and get close to the girls on my floor and my coworkers??

UPDATE: My suitemates want to beat me up

All right, so this is going to be an update to the Reddit post that I made last week regarding my suitemates stating that they wanted to beat me up.

I met with my supervisor a few days ago, and we had a conversation about the concerns about this incident and what we would do moving forward. We ultimately decided that if I were to conduct a meeting with my supervisor for mediation with my suitemates, it might cause more problems between me and them. They might feel as if I am using my status to go run along to my supervisor and basically complain about them without handling it on my own. My supervisor brought this point up to me, and honestly, I could see the truth in this as well. I have to deal with these residents until May, and I'd rather try to shut it down now than try to stir the pot and make it get worse throughout the months. I ended up confronting my suitemates a couple days ago. I knocked on their door, and they answered, and I basically asked if I could speak to them for a little bit and that they shouldn't be concerned, but I just wanted to have a chat. I stepped into their room, and they're both there, and I basically worded it as if we could have an open discussion about the bathroom situation since we are living together. I worded it as I would, saying, around this time of year, a lot of residents tend to have issues with each other when living together, and I just wanted to have a conversation with you since, yes, I'm your RA, but I'm also your suitemate, and I just want to have an open discussion that we could talk about anything we'd like to change about the bathroom, anything that you guys think is working, anything you guys think is not working, and this should be an open discussion. You guys should feel free to say whatever you'd like, and after I said this to my suitemates, they shook their heads and said that they had nothing to say, they had no problems with anything, and that everything was completely fine. I kept pushing them to hopefully say something, but they ended up not admitting, so I said, okay, well, I'm going to say some of my points, and at any time, feel free to pitch in if you have anything you want to say. I ended up listing my points about the tampon, about the sink, about the boundaries, about the man in the bathroom, and then a few other things, such as cleaning the bathroom and having a consistent cleaning schedule. The girls would nod their heads at the points I'd say and said that they were sorry or that they agreed with me. I then again opened the conversation for them to pitch in about anything that made them feel uncomfortable, anything that was annoying, anything like that, and again, they said that everything was fine and that they didn't have a problem with anything. I then ended the conversation saying that I felt that there was tension and I could sense that they were unhappy, and if there's anything they wanted to tell me, they should feel free to tell me now. They ended up looking at me in confusion and said that there was nothing wrong, and so I left and wished them a good night. Obviously know that they are probably just saying that and that something is wrong, but I did give them the opportunity. I also have a paper trail about meeting up with them, so if any more problems arise, I have that to look back on. I also let my supervisor know about the meeting, and I had written an incident report regarding the situation from last week.

I’m hoping that my conversation with them would hopefully shut down some things, but I know realistically it may not. This may not be the end of the situation, but I do have an incident report on file that I can always look back on if issues continue to arise. I will update here and let you guys know if anything happens, please let me know if there’s anything else I should do or should’ve done better.

rant

i got a verbal warning from my supervisor today. it was 100% my fault and im not blaming anyone else but it just really sucks. this job is so draining and i’m just so over it already. free housing is nice but it hardly compensates all the work i do. holiday duty, on call nights, door decorations, bulletin boards, planning, room checks, etc. etc. all those things take up so much time and energy that i just dont have anymore

Grad Programs not requiring a Master’s in Higher Ed

Kind of exactly what the title is asking. I saw a previous post on grad programs paying for a master’s programs but are there any where I could get a MBA and still get those benefits as a grad director/coordinator? Thx in advance fellow RAs!

No one showed up for a Mandatory Floor Meeting

The week before fall break, my school makes the RA’s do a floor meeting. I’ve been so busy with my own schoolwork and the 1-1’s with my residents that the only time I had before fall break was Thursday 8pm. I sent an email and several reminders out before hand and told them to email me if they wouldn’t be here. Only three people let me know they wouldn’t be here so I assumed the time was fine for everyone. I show up early and maybe 4 people total came. I told them I’ll send out an email and let them go. I emailed my boss about it but she’s on vacation until Sunday. I even knocked on doors and the people in the rooms just shrugged and said they forgot. It’s my first year as an RA and the dorm is in such a strange setup that I barely see, much less connect with my residents. Especially the ROTC guys. I already have a written warning because I forgot I was on duty for 20 minutes. What should I do and what do you think my boss will say?

RA Rant- My Suitemates/Residents are awful

I am a Senior Resident Assistant with freshmen in a suite-style dorm. I have my own room as an RA but have to share a bathroom with 2 of my residents- both 17 and 18-year-old girls. Don't even get me started on how I have to share a bathroom as a 22-year-old with 2 of my residents who are 3-4 years younger (it's a part of the job unfortunately.)

Recently, I found a used bloody tampon left on MY bathroom sink (there are 2 sinks per bathroom, one they share and one that is mine), which was from one of my suitemates/residents. I’ve already addressed this with them, emphasizing the importance of hygiene and respecting shared spaces, but the issue has yet to be resolved. She/or both continuously leave things on my sink and I consistently see tiny blood marks on my sink that I did not leave there. I confronted both of them and they apologized. I thought I had established a clear boundary as their suitemate and RA that my sink is off-limits.

Additionally, I encountered a situation where, after first knocking on the bathroom door and hearing no response, I found a naked man who was a guest of one of my residents.

Yesterday, a fellow RA said that they heard my suitemates saying that they "hated me" and wanted to "beat me up". This was concerning and I was in shock because I had done nothing to them except set a clear boundary. I am always friendly to them in the hallways and check in on them as I do with all my residents.

I have spoken to my supervisor about it and they were concerned about the threats the girls made because my door does not have a lock on it and they could potentially get in my room. I know 17-18-year-olds say things and don't mean them, but it was appalling that they would even say it out loud.

I am going home for the next few days due to the hurricane and plan to confront them next week. I know not every one of my residents is going to like me, but I know for a fact they are telling my other residents awful things about me that aren't true. I think they are just embarrassed or mad that I set boundaries because they have never had someone do that to them before (welcome to the real world.) This is just making me resent my job because I am about to graduate college and have to deal with kids who just graduated high school and have been in college for 2 months and are trying to start beef.

I know I have the power as the RA but just wanted to rant and am looking for advice. Thank you.

AITA if I talk to another RAs residents about issues and push the issue forward to our boss?

Hey! so at our school we’re conducting chats with our residents about wellbeing and things of that nature. Two girls talked to me about problems in their unit and I asked did they speak to their RA and they mentioned not being able to get in contact with her. I texted the RA, but I also submitted a report on the issues they were experiencing in unit. Was that wrong of me ? I didn’t have any ill intentions and just wanted to help out.

Burnout

I started my RA position in January and also worked over the summer, and have been working as an RA for 10 consecutive months now-- this is pretty much my second year.

I am so burnt out that when I'm not in class or on-duty, I spend the entirety of my day lying in bed. I don't even interact with my residents anymore, and it only makes me feel more guilty and lethargic. I feel like I'm being worked to the bone while simultaneously not working hard enough to justify how I'm feeling. I feel like I am having a crisis, and I'm one bad day away from dropping out of school or maybe doing something worse.

I talked to my supervisor about this, and she told me that our staff team is also like a support group, and if I need to take a break for whatever reason then we can always find someone to cover for me.

As nice as that sounds, I really can't bring myself to do something like that. I'd be putting so much unnecessary work on my coworkers (who are mostly newbie first year RAs), and I'd also feel like a failure for letting myself get overwhelmed by such low level problems. Jobs in the real world won't offer me such grace, and I feel like I need to learn how to deal with this stuff by myself if I want to make it.

I'm just having a really hard time doing that. It sucks. I wish there was an immediate fix to this.
