Rv or a house? Help

Me and my Mom are relocating to the US soon and we have a budget of max 100,000$. It is enough money to afford a new rv but not enough to buy a house. We also have 3 medium-size dogs.

The thing is - we are very new to the US and don’t want to risk it by immediately buying a house without getting enough information about the neighborhood. I know that US states can drastically differentiate from town to town. Some are considered ghetto, some are the opposite.

Is it a good idea to buy an RV and then save money to buy a land and use our rv as a home? Is it legal?

I’ve never towed before. My 2” receiver sits about 12” high, and the hitch for the teardrop I want is 17”. Will this be a problem with a drop hitch?

Drop hitches are usually used for jacked-up trucks, but I’d be using it in the opposite way. I know I can connect the trailer, but will this height difference cause any handling issues? If it matters, the trailer will be around 800 pounds loaded, tops. My small crossover (Kona Ultimate) can tow up to 2800, but it’s just a little fella so I’m staying as light as possible.

How old is too old?

Hi all!

Back again with another query for you. So I’ve come across a 2010 toy hauler for sale for $10k and as you can expect it will need some renovating and updating. Considering the price, age and thinking I’d have to maybe put $10k in which is probably being generous IF there is no major damage $20k potentially doesn’t seem bad considering the price of a new toy hauler. I’d definitely have it inspected before purchasing but as I’ve never owned an RV myself I’m not sure if its worth it to buy something this old.

TIA for any help or suggestions!

Dry campers have REAL energy needs. What if you only needed one 'box' connecting your RV to Solar and Alternator and Shore-Generator?

Plus, your solar is “always-on” for concurrent battery charging even when you’re on the road connected to Alternator or when your at an RV Park with Shore Power (or at home and plugged-in).

Also, no need for that old-fashioned, Battery “On/Off Flip-Switch”.

Dry campers... would this be interesting to you?

Any color changing alternitives to these bulbs?

These bulbs are extremely dim, so I'm wondering if there's another type of bulb like this one that I can change the color and brightness of from an app or something. If not that then at least something that's brighter cause these bulbs really suck

Winterizing fail

I put antifreeze in the freshwater tank and ran things until pink came out. I then tried to make sure the city water line was all set, but after depressing the one way valve, it won't close again. I wasted like a gallon of antifreeze before realizing it was gushing out the city water inlet. I tried to pull the valve closed with needlenose pliers, but it still gushes. What am I doing wrong?

How much truck?

Im looking at getting one of these. I drive a 2016 3.5 ecoboost f150 but I'm worried that it isn't enough truck for this, any input is appreciated. From what I've read the hitch weight is 1500.

Casita Heritage Deluxe- Two kids

Is that too crazy an idea? Two adults with a 1 year old and 3 year old. Snug and cozy? Or absolute nightmare?

Trying to balance between a quality rv, our available tow vehicle, and our comforts.

No water flow in RV

Hey all. im helping a friend get their RV ready for a weekend trip.

The problem is that the water simply just doesnt work.

i'll just tell you guys what she told me. The water was working but she noticed a leaking pipe underneath the rv. i come over to take a look but theres no leak now and no water coming out of the faucet or shower. she said that normally there is a "noise" when using the faucet which she said was the water pump. now upon testing there is no noise or anything. is it likely the pump died? i checked the fuse box and no breakers or fuses are tripped. Any help or guidance is greatly appreciated thank you all so much!

Calyx internet

Ive been researching and decided that this would possibly be the internet service i want. Something around $50-$100/month for service. I like the connecten and cheater cheetah routers that can connect to different towers but those are pretty expensive. Idk any other service like those and also im not that tech savy so when it comes to imei magic and atuff I see talked about I know nothing. I would like a reliable service on a budget to game with. Starlink would have to be my last option due to interuptions around like trees and such. I am still confused on everything I would need equipment wise to be able to connect to a desktop computer. Anyone know or have any resources i could visit online that would show everything I would need to get internet with calyx service. Or any other recommendations like them. Also can the kings comnect that came pre installed be used as a booster for other routers?

Plastic AC casing for rooftop AC blew off - how do I find out what casing to order to replace it?

Howdy - recently, the plastic casing blew off on my AC. How do I find out which casing to order as a replacement (or is it all standardized)? I have a 1997 Newmar Dutch Star, if it matters.

Thanks in advance!

toy hauler with big bed

Hi friends! Is anyone aware of a toy hauler with one queen or bigger bed and a simple kitchen? We honestly don't need a bathroom. Basically I'm looking to set my kids up sleeping in the open space that would be used to haul a wheeler and sleep in the queen bed with the wife. A/C and heat preferred.

Then SUNDAY... I can't make this stuff up!

SUNDAY Heading home from Leduc, Alberta and it's just gotten dark and I am driving the usual 100/110km down the #2 Highway... she stalls out completely. I pull over with the momentum left in her. Turn her off and wonder what is going on. I have a new battery, trans fluids are good... I try again, she starts up and starts to drive, Im like okay, here we go... get to 80km/hr and she stalls out again. I start to google. It may be the throttle vaccum. So I let her sit for two hours to cool off and hope that I at least can get her home. 9pm now, and I try again, she starts up and i pull out and excelerate to 60km/hr... she dies again. This time as I pull over with what little momentum she had left I then see all this gold shiny stuff on the shoulder... as I drive over it (no choice to pull around it with no power in my throttle)... i see wire bundles... WTAF.... I get out and discover it is a HUGE dump of roofing nails scattered down the shoulder of the highway for like 10 feet. The exact 10 feet I pulled over to. Of course. And yup... BIG bundle of nails right up in my brand new tires! I call a friend, one who I know wont say anything just offer to help. Cause I am beside myself at this point with all the recent events, specifically with Betty. Friend comes out to me and checks things out... best option, tow it. So he offers his AMA (yup i know, I know I need it and will have it - lets not go there right now). No tow trucks available until 6am. So sleepover for me on the side of the highway. Friend went home, reluctantly leaving me there. But I needed to be there at 6am and it was now after midnight. Situation continued in next post - RE: MONDAYI can't make this stuff up, such is my life!

LAST FRIDAY - Stalling again. :(

LAST FRIDAY On my way to work at 7am... stop for gas... then Betty won't restart. Check my fluids... dump a bottle of transmission fluid in. Still no restart, sounds like it is the battery? Get a boost. Yup battery. It's been on and off lately, so after work I go to get a new one. As I am about to drive to Edmonton the next morning, I'd rather be secure with a new working battery. ...Follow up to this battery on next post - RE: Sunday.

Boondocking battery capacity

I have a 2023 Forest River RV Cherokee Grey Wolf Black Label 25RRTBL and while it has solar and batteries, the batteries are drained overnight by the fridge when i'm boondocking. Can i just add another battery or two to the bank and survive the night or would it be better to shut down the fridge and just use an ice chest?

Best battery for me?

So I live in my RV in Michigan on my friend's property. I spent a lot of time insulating the thing for the winter and installing additional diesel heater. I have permanent electric hookup and I'm pitching in for electricity but my battery doesn't work any more. I'm trying to figure out what kind of battery I need. I don't have an inverter and don't really need it. I'm assuming the way it's set up the battery is constantly being topped up from the grid? I'm considering an expensive lithium iron phosphate battery but I'm worried about cold. The other option is AGM battery but I heard that it's worse. I really mostly need to to make sure that my propane and diesel heaters can start if power gets cut for any reason so my pipes don't freeze.

Thinking of buying this RV.. advice please!!

Hi, I am looking at purchasing a 2019 Winnebago Intent 29L class A from a private seller. Mileage is around 5,000 miles and generator gas around 50 hours of use. Older folks selling due to age and not using it as much. What is a good price to offer? I looked online and prices were all over the place. JD powers had retail averaging $57k. What is a good offer for me to place? Also, should I get a third party inspector? Anything else to look for? Any advice is greatly appreciated!! Thank you in advance.

2014 MB profile view rv

I’m trying to get power in my rv however nothing is working. When I connect the power to external outlet everything is working fine. Is there a switch inside the rv that cuts off the power supply? If so does anyone know the location.

Airbags in Class A units

Just curious, but for those of you with a Class A built on the Ford F53 (or any other) chassis, does anyone have any airbags up front? A friend has one with no air bags and I found that "interesting".

I am looking to buy an RV for retirement with the plan to live in it full-time for a few years. I asked AI to give me a list of RV manufacturers known to have the highest build quality, based on user comments and professional reviews. This was the list it generated for me. I would love to hear your feedback on these options, and why you agree or disagree.

Good books/PDFs on full time living

Battery charging on and off with generator

Today AGS turned on the generator to charge the batteries, and while charging, it stopped every few minutes and then resumed. The generator turned off at 13.6v when it was set to 14.5v. I’ve never used AGS before, but when the generator turned off, AGS also disabled. Also yesterday, I turned on the generator to charge, but 10 minutes later, the generator turned off and the breaker box switch went off.

Some electrical components cut out, didn’t trip a breaker

I’m sitting at home watching the World Series and on my laptop and I hear a bit of noise like something fell outside. A few moments later my internet went out and my laptop and car stopped charging. I went to check my circuit breakers and all of them are still firm in the on position. I’ve tripped a breaker before and it was way way louder.

I’m living in a 2024 dutchmen kodiak 26SRB with 30A power. I’m charging a plug in hybrid at 10A, charging my laptop, watching TV and have my lights on. I’ve done all of the above with the AC running without issue. The one time I tripped a breaker I had just finished using my air frier and flipped on the AC and was probably using everything else I mentioned.

I’m not an electrician and have no idea what is going on. Any advice? How screwed am I?

If RV is *only* going to use the lights and propane-furnace-ignitor (both DC?), and run off a 12V battery/solar *without* any shorepower....is the converter necessary or in the way?

Basically the RV worked at the campground hooked up to shorepower, moved it to the offgrid site and it's dead as a doornail when I try to hook up the 12v battery to it. BUT it turns out that when I put my [crappy little store-bought 300W sine-wave-inverter dc to ac] alligator clamps on the wires connecting the [Powertron RV Converter ac to dc] to the main wires coming through the floor...THEN the lights flicker and fan tries to kick in, etc.

My thought, newbie, is that obviously the wires have power in them if introducing an inverter on top of a converter caused a spark of life...is the issue the fact there's a converter at all? (I'm using DC battery, wanting to power only DC things, why would an ac-to-dc converter be necessary? Can I just cut it out?)

Basically I'm stumped and wanting to figure out if I need a new ac-to-dc converter because the current one is maybe bad, or ditch the ac-to-dc converter entirely, either inserting a new larger capacity dc-to-ac converter or perhaps nothing at all?

Prowler, would guess 90s (second-hand, mostly original inside but some modifications it seems)

Update: To clarify, the battery is good; 12v marine deep-cycle, just purchased new a few weeks ago and been using it to run to a non-RV standalone 300W inverter [mentioned above] to charge laptop/phone, still shows full charge.
