Saturday Marathon Streaming

So, for those who don't know, me and my roommate were burgled last week. We lost a fair amount of stuff... nothing irreplaceable, but nothing cheaply replaceable. And we weren't covered by insurance for it.

So... we will be doing a fundraising stream this weekend to try and help us recoup the losses. We'll be playing a number of games (Space Engineers, Final Fantasy XIV, Overwatch, etc) and generally just trying to have some positive fun, so even if you're not interested in chipping in, we'd greatly appreciate anyone who wants to to come out and stop in to chat and watch us be bad at games.

We'll be playing on my Roommate's channel at https://www.twitch.tv/nelcelestine starting Saturday at 6pm MST for anyone who's interested in checking it out.

Rimworld.

Sooooo I made the mistake of exploring my Steam store queue last night, and it actually had some pretty good suggestions this time around. I bought two games, though I've only gotten into Rimworld so far because it's kind of awesome.

Do you like Dwarf Fortress? Banished? Prison Simulator? How about the TV series Firefly? If you said Yes to any of these questions, then you'll probably enjoy Rimworld. Rimworld is like all of these things combined - A gritty open world survival game.

It's an early access game and has a kind of steep price for EA at 30-odd dollars. You also can't finely customize your colonists and can only randomize, but you get some pretty interesting randomly generated characters that way. There's actually a metric ton to their personalities and interactions (If you start with multiple colonists - The standard mode for the game). For example, in my new game I have a game dev girl named Hitomi who has the trait Ugly, so she keeps flirting with the simpleton guy and he keeps rejecting her :( The simpleton guy likes animals and building things, and there's a third guy that's a doctor who is ambivalent to the both of them, as well as just being bad at every job I assign him :P They develop these little social dynamics that are fun to watch.

I also picked up Project Zomboid - Also early access, but apparently has a co-op component. I'm curious about it but I'm not done checking out Rimworld to open it up yet.

Pokémon GO

It's not technically released here in Canada yet, but it's super easy to get and install on iOS/Android anyways, so I grabbed it last night. Having lots of fun. Walked about an hour last night just finding and catching things at a ravine near my place, and there's a park and a couple gyms near both my home and work. I think this will really help my motivation for walking to lose weight this summer. I just went and bought nice shoes so I don't destroy my feet while playing it :P

What about you guys? Have you gotten it yet? I wish it had social features beyond joining a team (I went with team blue) but I think that's still to come - I noticed that the app version is 0.65 or something, implying it's not the full 1.0 release (so it's like an incomplete beta test), also it only seems to have slots in the Pokedex for the first 129 Pokémon.

Should I void the warranty on my PS3?

It's overheating after a full day of playing.

The apartment is dusty (the cats refuse to use the low-dust cat litter, on top of normal dust).

So I figure that the insides of the PS3 are dirty and need cleaning.

Should I void the warranty, or is there a way to get it cleaned without voiding the warranty (and for less than just getting a new one)?

Undertale. You should play it.

It's not RBN related at all, but it's a damn good game that will make you feel super happy on the inside. Go get it. It's on Steam, or you can get the DRM free version from the website undertale.com. :)

Looking for a Minecraft server buddy.

I have a private minecraft server running Sky Factory.

It is only a 4 seat server, I don't like playing with huge crowds, but if anyone would like to join me I would enjoy building with someone else.

No PVP, No griefing, No bullshit. Joint builds and working together on an awesome floating citadel.

Send me a PM if you fancy joining me.

Looking for friends in WoW!

Hi RBN gaming community!

I got into WoW a couple of years ago because my boyfriend plays. I have been really enjoying it, but I would like to make some friends and play with more people!

I play Horde on the Boulderfist (US) server. My boyfriend and I have a guild, but we aren't that active and are the only remaining active members.

If anyone from the RBN community is looking for a fun game to try, or is an active player looking for a friend to level/group up with, comment or message me and I can send you my Battle tag! I'm really up for anything, whether its PvP, leveling, or raiding! I'm also willing to switch to Alliance if your heart is set on the dark side. :P

Also, if anyone is brand new, the Recruit a Friend program is pretty cool. Or if anyone has an existing guild, let me know! I am also interested in joining an active one.

I'm brainstorming creating a game based on being RBN :)

Hey folks!

So recently, if you subscribe to /r/ACON_Support and have been viewing the weekly update threads we have going, you might already know I'm taking an online course to learn C# for game design by making small games (And if you didn't now you do) :D I just recently finished up the text adventure my course had us make, and now I'm feeling ambitious, and want to make a couple more games in that format. And not everything has to have pretty graphics to be considered a good game, right?

Anyways, so here's the pitch: The game is about a son (or daughter) who is leaving home for the first time. They have to learn how to live independently, manage schedules and finances, etc., all while under fire from their mother for every decision they make. The main purpose of the story is to explore the complicated relationship between the player's character and their mother, while the PC attempts to branch out and assert their own independence.

Over the course of a year (Game time, not real time :P), the player will have several options for things they can do in the week. Selecting certain options will give you increases to your energy level and allow for more things you can do, whereas other options grant no benefit at all (Not a negative amount, just no benefit).

The purpose of the game is to simulate a Nparent-adult child relationship for the purpose of exploration. It could be an eye-opener for someone who has a similarly abusive parent, and there will be a survey at the end and resources made available for them if that winds up being that person's experience. Or, it could be used as a therapy tool for aware ACONs, who can click through and choose different responses to scenarios they may be familiar with or have been hurt in before. Or finally, a normal person with loving & healthy relationship with their parents could play it, and discover for themselves that not all families are healthy or loving, giving them some more perspective. Whatever the case is, the intent is to heal, to inform, and to make people aware that these types of abusive relationships are real, and they happen every day everywhere in the world.

Many scenarios can be triggering for ACONs, but I'm going to steer a wide berth around the more abusive triggers we're aware of (ie. sexual abuse, physical abuse, severe neglect, animal abuse, etc.). I don't have it in me to write scenarios depicting any of those anyway :( The main type of abuse featured in this will be verbal. Another thing to note, and I mean no disrespect, is that I will be eschewing our acronyms and terms (Except maybe gaslighting) as if a stranger to RBN communities were just discovering this for the first time. So there will be no ACON, no RBN, no Nmom, Edad, etc. etc. etc. The game will be hosted publicly, after all, so the relationship will be explored using plain English language.

Here are some scenarios/points of contention in the game that you'll have to respond to, but you won't come across all of them in a single playthrough:

  • A good therapist
  • A bad therapist
  • Job loss
  • Exploring new/old hobbies
  • Moving back home
  • Making new friends
  • Running out of money
  • Workplace bullying
  • Getting a haircut
  • And more!

There are four planned endings, and I'm in debate with whether I want to make it obvious how to get there by colour-coding the text, or if I want to keep it all in white and make it a surprise, then give the option to toggle it for future plays.

Now, here's the part I ask for feedback, comments, suggestions, and criticisms :) Fire away!

SuperBetter: A very positive game ACONs can really benefit from.

It's called SuperBetter, and I believe it's available on Android and iPhone for free. What it is, is it's like a real life quest log, with little activities you can do to build up your core strengths. I love the psychology that goes into it.

Please check out this TED talk by the creator that goes into more detail for why the game was created, and what it can do to help you live ten years longer:

https://www.ted.com/talks/jane_mcgonigal_the_game_that_can_give_you_10_extra_years_of_life?language=en

Even better, I challenge you to do the challenges she has for the audience later in the video, as you watch the video. Get those seven and a half bonus minutes, then use them playing SuperBetter to earn even more :)

Opening up my WoW guild to anyone who wants to join

Realm: Korialstrasz (or Eldre'Thalas)

Faction: Alliance

Guild: Raiders ofthe Lost Guild

Who to contact: Bankwench

Basically, this is the same guild I've been in since Vanilla with my various toons, although it's been through a few renames. It got gutted during MoP - everyone quit playing, including me. I've come back to the game but no one else has... and I'm so lonely. Plus, I feel silly stocking up the guild bank with stuff for people to level with when no one else is using it.

I plan on being online from 7pm-ish to 8pm-ish Pacific time to invite people to the guild. Everyone will be getting invite permissions, so y'all can continue to invite & recruit when I'm not online. I also opened up the invite to the members of /r/TrollXGirlGamers but I've only had a few people interested.

My Battle.net RealID tag is Amberwind#1190 in case anyone needs to message me if I'm not in-game when they want to join.

Anyone considering trying Final Fantasy XIV?

FFXIV currently has a 'recruit a friend' campaign going, with rewards for both the recruiter and the friend. All my friends already play so... anyone want an invite?

Harvest Moon games: Any other fans here?

Hey guys! Recently I bought more Harvest Moon games for the DS, because I am a hopeless addict. I was wondering if anybody else here plays them?

Right now I'm playing Harvest Moon 3DS, where my farmer girl Tesla has light blue hair and purple eyes. Maybe we can friend each other and trade stuff? :) I also have Story of Seasons (new release as of June 1st), Sunshine Islands, Island of Happiness, DS Cute, and Rune Factory 1 through 4. Had Tale of Two Towns somewhere too but I lost it/didn't enjoy it very much.

Eye strain using handhelds...

I've currently got one game going on the 3DS (Pokemon Conquests) and one on the PSP (Phantom Brave: the Hermuda Triangle--too cute!).

And because my parents were negligent, I have nearly no "folk wisdom" on how to handle things.

The two hand-helds are giving me some serious eye strain. It take breaks, but it gets bad enough that I wouldn't want to try to drive after a gaming session, and I can't just jump from one to the other.

Other than staring off into the distance, which I do for a couple of minutes every hour or so, is there anything that can help my aging eyes re-adjust after I pull my nose out of the hand-helds?

(I notice that my Kindle doesn't do this too me, and my Kindle is an e-ink version, no backlight. So I suspect some of the problem is the backlight.)

Desktop Dungeons - on sale right now!

This game was the Steam daily deal a couple days ago, and it's still on sale until noon central time.

It's super great. I would not have regretted paying $15 for it, but for $5 it's impossible to pass up.

Edit: it's not on sale any more. Still a good game at $15 though.

I think I've created a monster....

Ok, I got my husband to start playing Disgaea D2, which I had returned to and was having serious fun with again.

And, as usual with him, he binged. It's been him playing his game or me playing my run through for the last two weeks.

Ummm, how do I not burn out because he's playing the game I'm also playing? There's optional stuff post game that we're both interested in, and he's already way ahead of me.

(And yes, this is very much ACoN related: as a kid, I would just give up and go to my room, because I didn't matter. I don't want to stop his enjoyment--it's a good sign that he's getting over some serious perfectionist training he received from his FLEAsMom--but I also don't want to just leave the room: it's my home, it's the game I'm also loving, but damn, it's getting to be too much!)

It's the little victories....

Not much of N going on here: just an ACONM and my husband (who has a FLEAsMom).

Well, when we were first hanging out, we bounded over video games: FFX will always be a "thing" with us. We've bounded over lots of stuff, eventually getting married.

One of those games he adored was / is Disgaea. Well, they finally, 10 some years later, have a direct sequel, Disgaea D2, which I've been merrily playing.

Last night, I finally got him to start his own game. I went to bed at about midnight, heard him around 4-5 am heading to bed and all.

Someone play me the Victory music from FFX? ;-)

(He's been keeping away from some of the things he loved as a teenager as we went through some hair-raising job problems over the last 5 years or so...downsized, downsized, downsized, one after another. He's been having to be Responsible. Well, between the Pokemon binge and this? I think he's finally relaxing: we're ok, he's got a good job, and things don't have to be professional all the time. We got this.)

It's a board game, but...

Last weekend I played a bunch of games of Eclipse: New Dawn for the Galaxy and I think it might actually be relevant here.

There are a few games like it, where you run a space empire and build starships and so forth: Twilight Imperium is the other big one. I really like the idea of them but Eclipse is the only one I can stand to play and I think I know why now. Most of the time in those games, the win condition is either explicitly or implicitly "crush the other players with your massive navy." Either it's last-man-standing, or it's a victory point system heavily weighted toward capturing territory. So, no matter how much you might find it distasteful, you can't win without backstabbing your friends and waging war on them.

Eclipse isn't like that at all. Not only are there plenty of victory points to be had just researching stuff for the fun of it, but there are also a lot of points available for fighting battles with NPCs. I won a game on Saturday where I never entered a single combat or built a single ship.

Games that relax me.

Hey guys, I thought I would share some of my favourite titles that help me relax and calm me down. I find that competitive gaming is one of my triggers/brings out the worst of FLEAS in me, so I've changed up what I play to things that don't cause me stress. Here's a sample of what I play nowadays, what I've done to mod it, and why I enjoy it:

  • Banished

Love this game. Have installed a handful of mods through Steam Workshop (No Coal in Houses, Flux Capacitor, Storage Shed, etc.), even created a couple of my own (Though as of yet unpublished). It's challenging when you first play it because you learn the resource balancing act the hard way, but once you've got it down it's super relaxing. The in game music is soothing, there's weather and rain sounds if that's something that appeals to you, and all the graphics are sort of soft if that makes sense. I've only recently started playing with disasters enabled, but they come up so infrequently. I've had only a couple tornados that have missed the town entirely each time.

  • Towns

The music for this game literally puts me to sleep. I've often left the game running and taken a nap on the futon in my office just letting it automate. Recently I've been making new towns with Sieges/God events off and just trying to get my ugly houses built. I don't know why city building is fulfilling for me, but it is. I can point at my game and be like "I made this." I don't run any mods for this game largely because I'm just not aware of any.

  • Minecraft

This definitely fulfills my inner hermit. I can just build a shack in the woods and be left to my own devices. I play a lot of different modpacks across both the FTB launcher and the Tekkit launcher, and I'm always trying new ones. Sometimes I also try to build villages of converted zombies, but that involves going to the nether to get a blaze rod, and then not getting killed by zombies, so I don't try it often. Currently I have a skyblocks world where I have a scrub mob grinder that just relies on half blocks and gravity, and a bunch of three bedroom homes in my empty floating village. That save is on the current release of Minecraft, which means no snow because the biome changed with the map seed, but witches spawn at night and have a variety of drops not previously accessible in Skyblocks games. In modpacks I really like automation, so I once had a Tekkit world with a farm that harvested & replanted itself and powered itself (Biofuel) and also made my wheat into bread. :P

  • Recettear

Original reason why I made this post was because I recommended this to another RBNer today and it made me think of it. There's a bit of a challenge aspect to it in that you have to make enough money to pay down an amount towards your debt each week, but once that's done you can play endless mode and just dungeon crawl if you like. I like games where I can make a lot of money too - Might be the dragon side of me trying to amass a hoard :)

  • Final Fantasy 8

Been playing this on Steam recently for YouTube because there's an achievement to beat the game with Squall at his initial level (Level 7). When FF8 was only on the PSone there was a No Level Up guide floating around the Internet that instructed you to either knock him out or turn all of your enemies into cards. This is the same thing only with an actual achievement tied to it. This is one game I don't mind grinding, I like the music, the game play style, everything about it. In my current playthrough I've only had one stressful moment, and that was more because I went into a boss fight unprepared and didn't think I'd beat it within the time limit, but I did!

  • The Sims 3

In this one I usually have one hermit character based on myself who gardens, paints, and independently publishes novels. It's sort of silly to me how you don't really need a job in the game because hobbies can be so profitable on their own. Sadly this one hits sort of close to home (I wish I could get paid enough to live off of by just working on my hobbies!) and I have to put it down for a while because I start thinking 'What am I doing with my life?'

  • Defense Grid: The Awakening

This one is borderline for me because there's always that moment towards the end of the level where you're not sure whether your towers do enough DPS for the last few bosses or waves. But I like the puzzle aspect of it. It tells you what towers are good for what types of aliens, so if you're getting a lot of swarmers put flame towers on corners or where they're walking straight away from it. I'm always hitting backspace to try it slightly differently. Tower upgrade timings are strategic too, because it means that tower isn't producing damage for several seconds. And finishing a mission without losing a single core feels good, too. It does have a competitive aspect to it (Leaderboard with your steam friends), but I don't pay much attention to it. I'm just trying to beat it my way for that sense of accomplishment.

Need a game recommendation

Looking for something new to play.

I like jRPGs and Strategic RPGs. Favorite games include FFX, FFXII, Disgaea (all of it), Dark Cloud II, Kingdom Hearts, FFVII:Crisis Core, and such.

Systems include PS2, PS3, PSP, DS, 3DS...the Wii died.

I just tried to play through Radiata Stories and rage-quitted because of needing too many maps / walkthroughs to try to play a very laggy game and characters that just didn't connect for me. That was yesterday, after playing for about 20 hours. Today, I tried to go through Valkyrie Chronicles, and rage-quitted again: I'm not in the mood for that hard of a learning curve right off the bat. The graphics were lovely, looks like a solid story, but having my butt handed me every battle was not the sort of challenge I'm feeling like right now.

I just finished Lightening Returns: FFXIII twice in a row--surprised I liked it enough to play it through twice.

I could finally go back to Personna 4 and Personna 3 and do them, but I'm not wanting something that dark. I nearly finished Personna 4: it's fun, just not what I want right now.

So, recommendations? Someone elsewhere recommended Folklore, but I'm not sure if I can get a copy.

Does anybody play FFXIV?

Helloooo. Figured I'd give this a shot - does anybody play FFXIV on the Leviathan server? I'm in a FC right now that, at its busiest time of day, has about 2 people on not including myself. Needless to say, the chat's not very active. I'm a very casual player, focusing more on leveling, hunts, and now TT. I'd love to connect with some friendly people.

Minecraft server: sorry about the downtime!

The Minecraft server was down, apparently, and I had no idea. Whatever, it's back up now, and everything is the way it should be (except there are no people). So come play!

Server address is 162.244.166.1:50509 . To be added to the whitelist, PM me or something.

Who wants to be a Minecraft mod?

We are looking for mods for the Minecraft server! Requirements:

  1. Actually play Minecraft. It would help if you're on the server a lot, which, you know, I'm not.

  2. Reddit account more than six months old. If you use a separate account for RBN stuff PM me from your real account.

  3. Familiar with Minecraft and its modding tools. Because I'm not.

If you want the difficult, thankless job that is moderating, post here with:

  • Do you moderate any other subreddits or shared game servers?
  • What time zone are you in?
  • How much time do you have to devote to minecrafting?
  • Why do you want to be a moderator?

Thanks!
