Hi everyone,
I'm trying to find the best introductory books ever written upon post-structuralism, continental philosophy and critical theory.
I would like to find exactly the books that not only provide great summaries of the ideas of philosophers from the traditions mentioned, but also delving into the specificities of their theories, hopefully, in a well-written manner.
Please, also share with us your experience reading some introductory books.
Thank you (:

I was having a discussion with a buddy trying to peak his interest in philosophy/literary criticism.
I found it really hard to explain Derrida’s decentralization of “meaning” and found a very useful analogy in trigonometry.
Are you guys familiar with asymptotes? They are a feature of hyperbolas or parabolas. Imagine a coordinate plane, asymptotes are the values (x=2 or y=3 for example) where a trigonometric function starts breaking down and producing weird undefined outcomes like f(x)= 1 divided by 0.
They are usually represented by dotted lines that the function “approaches” but never actually reache. Because they are not actually part of the function but instead demarcate its limit.
I used this as an analogy for meaning of words or signifiers as Derrida describes it. That, in some way, the presence of a fixed meaning is really just a hypothetical value (like an asymptote) that is implied by the play of binary opposites. Signifiers “approach” but never actually reach a fixed meaning!
What do you think? Is this an apt metaphor? Or does this not make sense/misrepresent?
Im fairly novice and was just trying to help my friend visualize the ideas
Thanks for reading!
Hey there,
I have just read Lacan's text on E. A. Poe's The Purloined Letter. My first text by Lacan and I'm hooked. I'm interested how him being a psychoanalyst and post-structuralist are going together. Like how does he combine the two? Especially in this Poe piece (I'm a beginner, don't know a lot about post - structuralists, also sorry for any mistakes, I'm not a native speaker ) thanks for any insights! :)
The Beginner's Mind Reading Club at Discord will be reading the first chapter of "The Society of the Spectacle", that is "Separation Perfected" on Saturday, the 27th of February at 9 AM PST. All beginners (and everyone else) are welcome. https://discord.gg/2TbzNzsqak
does postmodern epistemology have much influence in political discourse? or is it more limited to academia because that notion of disposing of epistemic privilege in a type of cultural relativism seems to actually exist in public discourse - when people talk about nonintervention and in postcolonial critique. but then within the state there's not really a sense of domestic political issues as clashing epistemologies and clashing theories of good that should be equally respected
Any recommendations for some fiction that is influenced by or rooted in poststructuralist thought?
Thanks in advance.
hello, is it right to state post structuralism is critical to behaviourism?
