Stale topics | Topics on our Stale Topics list are banned as they have been discussed many times. Please see here for our stale topics. Certain comments are also banned to increase the quality of discussion. Stale topics are constantly changing, and it is ultimately up to the discretion of the moderators whether a topic is stale or not. |
Low effort discussions | Discussion posts should try to foster discussion, the body of the text post must encourage discussion or offer the original poster's thoughts. Comments must also explain their answers. Any discussion posts that ask for recommendations, help to make a playlist, or only ask for people to name songs/albums/artists that fit a certain criteria without explanation/justification will be redirected to the Daily Discussion thread. |
Non-newsworthy posts | Please only submit pop music news-related articles, videos, images or links that are topical and noteworthy. Though posts such as articles, videos, links or pictures consisting of non-newsworthy content will be removed, they are always welcome to be posted in Daily Discussion Threads. Please do not editorialize article or interview titles except for cases of major announcements. Guidelines for teasers and Instagram posts. |
Follow reddit rules/reddiquette | This is a given. |
Tabloid material | This subreddit forbids tabloid material that focuses on non-newsworthy drama, sensationalist content, and/or dubious sources. In order for gossip to be considered newsworthy, it must either be reported on by a major, reliable news source or have been addressed by the artist in question. Please redirect your content to the daily gossip megathread, Teatime & Trending Topics. |
No Spam | Any self-promotional posts should be from established members of the community. We take this very seriously, and any spam is unacceptable and will be removed. Users must have at least 10 posts/comments spread out over a few months on the subreddit to self-promote. |
Recent songs only | Only songs & videos released within the last 30 days can be posted. The sub only allows FRESH music after it has been officially released in the UK. This mainly refers to Friday releases; other posts are generally released worldwide. Always remember to use the 'Artist - Song' title format. Music videos are only allowed on or after the advertised YouTube premiere time. Each user can only submit a maximum of 3 FRESH posts per 24 hours, with a minimum of 10 minute intervals between each submission. |
Keep things civil | Please do not come here for the sole reason of harassment/flaming. Keep things civil. Use of discriminatory language isn't appreciated. Posts that appear to be baiting arguments will be removed. Attacking other users will warrant a ban. Please keep negative "stan-twitter"-isms on stan twitter. |
No illegal media | Do not post illegal streams or downloads of songs/albums. Asking for or posting instructions on how you can get it is also not allowed. These are banned on reddit sitewide, and sharing such material endangers our whole community. If it was an honest mistake, please message us; we'll try to be as lenient as possible. Video clip posts from unofficial sources will be removed as well. |
Pop music? | We are purposely vague on what we consider pop, because it's a difficult genre to define. Usually we'll try to focus on more mainstream pop, but pop-adjacent artists are allowed. In general, the mods trust you all to post relevant music. Music will generally not be removed by a moderator unless it is deemed shitposty or too irrelevant to the subreddit. This rule is subject to moderator discretion, but if you feel a removed post was relevant please notify us! |
Flairing Posts | Flairs are NOT manually typed in the thread title – please select the flair either during or after submitting by clicking on the flair button that looks like a little dog tag and choosing the adequate option. |
Reposts | Please check the subreddit for articles and streams that have been posted already. |
No Queue Flooding | Users can only submit a maximum of 3 posts per 24 hours, with a minimum of 10 minute intervals between each post submission. This rule applies to all post flairs. |
Teatime threads should exclusively have tea | Teatime threads should only have news or your reaction to news. You not liking the last New Music that dropped isn't tea and belongs in the Daily Discussion Threads. |
Leak Threads | Leak threads are to be contained in the Daily Discussion and Teatime & Trending Topics threads and are not allowed as its own post. Posting a link to a leak results into a temporary ban. |
FRESH: New songs released in the last 30 days. If an album or song is region locked (meaning that it isn't available until Midnight in your region), please wait until after it's been released in the UK (which typically is Midnight GMT (UTC+0) but Midnight BST (UTC+1) during Daylight Savings) to post it. Each user may only post multiple [FRESH] streams 10 minutes apart.
FRESH ALBUM: Same rules as [FRESH] apply, but this is to be used for albums and mixtapes. The 10 minute rule applies too.
FRESH EP: Same as above but with EPs.
FRESH VIDEO: Newly released music videos.
PERFORMANCE: New live performances from recent awards/TV shows. Only official sources are allowed, i.e. the official YouTube channel of the award/TV show, so no fan footage.
NEWS: Newly released info by official artist sources or news publications.
ARTICLE: Non-news related links, such as interviews, reviews, or other write-ups. Videos will be included under this until we figure out something that isn't useless.
DISCUSSION: Thought-provoking posts that start discussions. Please write something in the textbox to kick off the discussion (e.g. suggesting examples or providing your own opinion), don't just pose a question. This is not for links.
LEAK: Thread announcing that a project has leaked. Discussing the leaks is fine, but no links. Illegal links are banned sitewide on reddit.
ORIGINAL: Links to your own material that you'd like to share with the subreddit. Only OC from regular members will be allowed.
SERIOUS: For any content with sensitive subject matter. No joking or memes allowed in the comments.
Special flairs:
WEEKLY: Only to be used on mod-approved weekly threads. See the thread schedule.
ANNOUNCEMENT: Official statements from the moderators.
RATE and RATE REVEAL: Threads for the monthly rates, posted by the hosts.
MEGATHREAD: All-encompassing threads accommodating important/notable releases or events. If you would like to create a megathread please ask through modmail.
GAME: Informal, fun threads. Please ask the moderators through modmail for permission to host these.

I looked around but do you have to get awards for it or something? I don’t use Reddit much. And hopefully I’m using the right tag.
I know we got Olivia but there’s been no others since.
Or will platforms like TikTok and instagram take their place? Will talent shows like The Voice and American Idol supplement them?
Does the younger generation even watch current Disney/Nick programs enough to provide the fanbase for potential upcoming pop stars?

it seems like a lot more music artists (at least in the late 20th and 21st centuries) venture into acting than actors become major artists. for example, popstars like harry, dua, the weeknd, gaga, charli, beyoncé, rihanna, sza, madonna, taylor, etc. first gained their notoriety from music before stepping into acting. for the pop girlies who got famous on disney channel/nick (i.e. miley, selena, demi, sabrina, olivia, ariana), i feel like their disney projects included them doing music, so it’s not like they did many years as solely actresses before ever even thinking about music. there are a few exceptions such as jlo, renée rapp, and hailee steinfeld that did acting for a while first, but it’s overall less common that starting out as an artist and then getting into acting. why do you think that is?
sorry for the long and clunky title lol, but i couldn't find a better way to phrase it.
basically, i was thinking about how artists like bieber, ariana, kelly clarkson, and ofc the Queen of Christmas™️, Mariah usually get a boost in their sales around this time of the year because they have popular christmas songs. even though other than ariana, most of these artists haven't really recently released any popular songs otherwise.
that got me thinking- what are some other songs that always get replays cause they're associated w specific situations, regardless of how much people like the artist themselves?
examples would be- thinking out loud and perfect by ed sheeran being popular wedding songs. 22 by taylor for 22nd birthday parties. her song august tends to go semi-viral every late aug/ early sep. we are young by fun. was a popular graduation ceremony track. party in the usa being the unofficial national anthem.
any other examples you can think of?
In this thread, you can discuss today's pop music gossip and trending topics. Acceptable content are rumors, tweets, gossip, and articles that would not be approved as its own post (e.g. not a legitimate news article or a social media post directly from the artist or their PR). Nudity and NSFW content is not accepted. War updates or political news without relation to celebrities is not allowed. Intentionally posting misinformation or "joke" tea is not allowed. Please always try to provide a link to a source or an example. Posts making serious accusations without providing context are subject to removal.
Comments that do not fit under the Tea Time Thread content of celebrity gossip (e.g. personal gossip/stories, music suggestions, thoughts on new music releases, etc.) will be removed and directed to Daily Discussion. Please be respectful - normal rules still apply and any comments found breaking the rules will be removed and you will be warned/banned.
Good morning! Here is this week's review of the Billboard Canadian Hot 100 chart. As next week is Christmas, I'll be taking the next two weeks off since I'll be with my family and won't have much spare time to do this. I will be back on January 7th for the first chart update of 2025!! As always, to view the full chart, click here.
Thanks for reading and have a great week!
Talk about anything, music related or not. However, pop music gossip should be discussed in the Teatime & Trending Topics threads, linked below.

Between the lack of PR, the overreliance on singing and not dancing/entertainment value, it feels like we are seeing a decline in the development of artists.
I’m not sure if this is because we don’t really watch music videos anymore or because artists are in front of crowds almost immediately but it’s really lacking.
Also - the girls are not being media trained anymore. It seems like social media has created an overexposure of artists to where parasocial relationships form and quickly become toxic.
What do you think is causing this lack of development among new pop artists?
One thing I love about pop music is how the pop girlies treat every album era like a complete reinvention. It’s not just about the music—it’s the visuals, the aesthetics, the persona, and the world they build for fans.
Take Brat by Charli XCX with its Y2K cyber-party vibes, Short n’ Sweet by Sabrina Carpenter leaning into soft, romantic energy, or GUTS by Olivia Rodrigo serving angsty teenage rebellion. Even The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess by Chappell Roan feels like stepping into a colorful, campy universe of its own.
Each era feels like its own little world—distinct and immersive. Why do you think pop girlies do this so well? Is it about keeping things fresh, or is it deeper—like creating an experience or escape for listeners?
I’d love to know:
Which artists or albums you think nailed this kind of reinvention.
Your favorite “world” a pop girl has created recently.
Why this level of world-building feels so central to pop music.
Let’s discuss!
This thread was inspired by watching Britney's Toxic performance (the one with the fake tattoos on her arms). My Lord, what an electrifying, stunning, God-like talent. Truly mesmerizing.
I'm thinking of MJ and Madonna and how it was talent and aesthetic that made them the stars they are.
So why do the top artists of today lack this kind of talent that is expert, work-on-it-your-whole-life level good?
With social media, it seems like our top artists' number one attribute is likeability. Are they personable? Do they seem like your friend? Are they authentic?
Even if you don't like Taylor, a big thing for her and her fans is how she crafts a personable, down to earth persona. It's even to the point where I feel like if she took a year off to do dance lessons and became a great dancer, it would almost contradict her brand. Her lanky awkward moves are part of her charm for her fan base. It's giving, introvert dancing in her bedroom alone (eg You Belong with Me mv)
But i'm thinking of Madonna and she was very unlikeable. Very commanding though and a very strong artistic vision. (I could be wrong, I wasn't alive during her peak). And MJ? I don't even know his personal life. Except what came out after his life ofc. Back then, without social media, it didn't matter. the dancing, the visuals, the singing: those were what sold you to the public.
I think the last star of this caliber is Beyonce. She is extremely private, but her artistry is finely crafted like a Greek statue. Honed and refined since childhood. Vocals out of this world.
Oh, and Bruno Mars too: no one knows anything about him yet his voice and dancing and persona is iconic and known to the masses. He is a radio star and video star through and through.
So, what do y'all think? Will super star vocals, expert dancing, mysterious personal life ever become part of the mainstream again? Or does relatability remain king?

#Personal Chart of the Week
One of the joys some people have on the chart is seeing their own impact on the chart. Whether its seeing your #1 song at #1, or seeing it bubbling under, people like seeing songs they like being adored by other users. In this section, one lucky chart participant will see their own chart and the impact it had on the full chart this week. NOTE: In the case of charts exceeding 15 songs, I will trim down the lowest tie to fit the chart by using the songs that charted the highest (or are funniest). This week, we have the chart of /u/Rude_Surprise2539!

The tracking dates for the next weekly chart is December 5, 12:00 PM GMT - December 12, 11:59 AM GMT and results will come out next Monday, December 16.
##How The Chart Works:
These charts are created based on how frequently each song appears in the top 10 songs/albums for all of the users signed up for the chart. If the song or album occupies that user's #1 spot in their individual chart, it receives 15 points, then 14 points for #2, so on and so forth until 6 points for #10. If there is a tie, which is a common occurrence, then the number of points is averaged across those positions, e.g. if two songs are tied for #1, both will receive 14.5 points. Oftentimes there will be multiple songs tied for the last place, in which case the number of points each song receives decreases until it bottoms out at 1 point each.
