What kind of mother would a redeemed Azula be like?

Let's imagine a scenario in which Azula finally redeem herself and, years later, she met a good man with whom she got married and later have a child as well, how would she fair as a mother towards her child?

Now personally i'm pretty sure that a redeemed Azula would try her best to raise her child to be a better person than what she used to be in the past, but what strategies would she apply to do so? Would she be an overly strict parent out of fear that by spoiling her child would turn him/her as cruel as she was in the past? Or would she go easy on her child to make sure that he/she doesn't feel neglected or betrayed like she did in the past?

And most importantly, would she actually be able to be a good mother towards her child?

Azula makes a birthday cake (cursed art I made a week ago).

Happy birthday Aang. I photoshopped someone else's fan art, so it's not completely original.

I'm writing a really long fanfic about Azula's time in prison (already wrote 200 pages), and could use some of your suggestions...

I've noticed that many people, I mean fanfic writers, write stories about Azula's redemption and stuff, but no one has ever touched the subject of her time in prison, or mental asylum if you will. And by that I mean everyday life, and interaction with someone else aside from visitors like Zuko or Ty Lee. What I should concentrate more on? Abuse and bullying from C.O.'s and other inmates? Her psychological problems? Or something else entirely?

The debate shouldn’t be about whether she deserves redemption, but about whether she deserves happiness

I think the vast majority of why the debate has been as divisive as it is, is because of the usage of the term redemption, which means a lot of different things to different people.

However, once you look into the definition of the term redemption, you realize how empty it is for the most part, in the sense of that by its definition the majority humanity today is evil, and I say this because of the work of Peter Singer, in which he outlines precisely the terms required to be a good person, which most people dont meet.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KVl5kMXz1vA

I mean think about it, how many of us are unwilling to give up our luxuries, our commodities for the sake of reducing the amount of suffering in third world countries, how many of us are active philanthropists, working to make the world a better place, instead of just looking out for our own interests, and the interests of the people we personally value for whatever reason.

As such, I believe that the far more important question to answer, which ultimately is what most people think about when they say how they want her to have a redemption, is whether or not she deserves the most basic of all human rights.

The right to happiness.

And I believe how in the future we should be making this point clear to everyone.

If anything, I would like for someone who knows how to get posts viral to make a post on the main sub, asking everyone this question, whether she deserves happiness or not, although obviously anyone who answers no either doesnt know what theyre talking about or is a monster themselves, but the point is that by doing this I believe we could finally come closer to ending this debate.

The thing that made Azula click for me was Guardians of the Galaxy 2

There's not much else to say. This wasn't when I first watched it tho. I just fell in love with Nebula as a character and as I was thinking over arc I realized her and Gamora's arc are in many ways a reversed Azula/Zuko dynamic where the gifted one leaves first. But at no point does the franchise make it anything but certain that Gamora was still abused.

GotG 2 shows that the constant competition forced on these two was itself abusive as it robbed from them their childhood and the only person in their world who'd understand. From the outside tho, the "prodigy" is better off when both are just trying to survive.

These are things that once I internalized Azula just clicked. Azula always had a front, but this is why. From there I just saw how Zuko got support from Iroh and Ursa they didn't extend to Azula ("She's crazy, and has to be taken down" "What is wrong with that child?). This is a consequence of Azula seeming "better off." It's the exact isolation this tactic is trying to intact. Azula is terrified of being compared to Zuko, and they do actually care about each other. Azula sincerely offers Zuko a chance back at home, before she even suspects Aang is alive, and Zuko does actually think he should try to work it out with her in Bitter Work. She torments him and they compete and they also seem to hate each other growing up, but they're the only people who can actually understand each other.

Yeah that’s the main reason, what’s wrong with it? Is it not a good enough reason?

Zuko also didn’t want one at first, but he grew as a person. That’s the point of his arc. Why can’t Azula do the same?

Azula, Zuko and turtle ducks..

So people assume Azula tortures animals, despite having only scene of Zuko doing it infront of Ursa and getting pissed of cuz it bit him? Like bro if you saw ur sister doing the same why the heck are you suprised that animal is pissed you? Could it be that since Azula was younger she was rougher not fully understanding that it hurt them? I mean it feels like people flip flop between having Zuko be a gentle crybaby and more mature when he should be smarter as he was older. Did I miss something?

I honestly dont know how anyone can claim that Azula is incapable of experiencing guilt when this scene from The Search exists (timestamp in the description)

I found the perfect article explaining exactly the type of behavior Azula has, and how it differs fundamentally from psychopathy

The article in question is by professor Sam Vaknin, in which he explains the difference between vulnerable and grandiose narcissism and why the latter is a manifestation of psychopathy, whilst the former is born from insecurities, I wont go over it myself as I encourage you to read it yourself as it will explain much better than I could

https://vaknin-talks.com/transcripts/Real_Narcissists_are_Covert_Grandiose_Narcissists_are_Psychopaths/

And just as a note so that I dont turn off some people by suggesting what she has in any way genetic, here is list of environmental factors which result in NPD which shows how her childhood was the perfect breeding ground for it

-An oversensitive temperament (individual differences of behavior) at birth

-Excessive admiration that is never balanced with realistic criticism

-Excessive praise for good behaviors, or excessive criticism for bad behaviors in childhood

-Overindulgence and overvaluation by family or peers

-Being praised by adults for perceived exceptional physical appearance or abilities

-Trauma caused by psychological abuse, physical abuse or sexual abuse in childhood

-Unpredictable or unreliable parental caregiving

-Learning the behaviors of psychological manipulation from parents or peers

Can someone honestly just ask Mike or Bryan on Twitter or anywhere really whether Azula is a born psychopath, and is thus unable to ever truly care for or love anyone?

Im honestly tired of seeing this debate pop up endlessly whenever there is any mention of Azula anywhere on the internet, and whilst Im firmly in the camp of her NOT being a born psychopath, there is a huge part of the fanbase that is completely unwilling to budge on their view of her as one unless given 100% undeniable evidence of it.

This is a lot more pf a serious issue than you might think, as it makes these individuals incredibly hostile towards any potential prospects of an Azula redemption or recovery arc, thus making the fandoms reaction to any such thing in the future potentially very toxic.

So can anyone who knows how to contact either of them do this, so we can end this debate once and for all.

Edit: Honestly thinking about all the other things Bryke and Aaron said I dont think even this will work for a lot of people, I believe they would sooner invoke Death of the Author than admit they were wrong, as if Bryke ever cared about fan opinion when it came to deciding how to write the series, so ignore this request, and just dont bother.

Canon really puts some Game and Throne plot in Azula and Zuko....

This screenshot is "Canon".It came from the Tale of Azul (2007-2008)

Azula:He (Zuko) can't hide his true feelings and desires for me.

Gonna be honest.I never thought Cannon really put some "lannister" plot in the "kids" show.

One argument I’ve seen for why Azula shouldn’t be redeemed is that it can show that some people can’t rise up from their trauma. However, why do this with Azula when Hama already exists?

Hama was imprisoned by the Fire Nation and when she escaped, she chose to take out her anger and pain on innocent people. I doubt she’d be willing to move on from the past just because Zuko was in charge. Just bring her back for a project set shortly after Book 3.

I wish there was a scene in the finale before Zuko visited Ozai where he visited Azula to show that he cares about her.

I would have Zuko visit Azula as she’s about to be transported to the asylum. We see Azula actually be desperate for the first time in the show. She just tries to break out of her chains, she’s panicking. Nothing is working. Azula pauses for a moment to process that this is real, she lost, her worst fears of being abandoned have come to life. She starts to silently cry. But right when this happens, Zuko opens the door. He sits next to Azula on her bed, she expects to him to gloat but he just says that he never wanted to fight her. She basically tells him to fuck off but Zuko promises that he’ll come see her again and assures her that he won’t give up on her. Azula replies by calling him weak. After he leaves, the hallucination of Ursa appears on the same spot where Zuko was sitting. She tells Azula that she’s lucky to have Zuko there for her. Azula has no response and only closes her eyes. She starts welling up with tears being visible as she knows that deep down, the hallucination is right.

Has anyone one of you feel like Azula more like broken version of young Ursa(before she was forced to married with Ozai) rather than the copy of Ozai when reading "Search"?

Iken said Ursa kicked him in his stomach then pushed his face in the dirt when she was 6 years old and always like to laugh at Iken coward personality. That made me feel like young Ursa was a very naught girl just like Azula but under good parent discipline.

I just realized how similar Ursa and Azula they really are.

Both of them had shown boldness and a certain level of violence when they were six years old.

Unlike Zuko. He acted more like Ikem when he was little.

Both of their mother keep telling them how much they really love them.

Even their hairstyles and the way they smile are so similar to each other.

https://preview.redd.it/1yp4qp6bwhpc1.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=a8fc8ea1478e7d7b715096828fc3512d61ca29e7

And there is an interesting thing. Zuko said Azula always played Dragon Emperor, while ZuZu always played the villain when they were little. So who played Dragon Empress with Azula/Zuko? Remember Ursa had the chance to play Dragon Empress, and she really wanted to, but she never did it when she was in her hometown?
