If you’re here to chat, drop by on our Discord Server at: https://discord.gg/XnXXs5PrtQ
Before posting, please give a quick glance at our list of rules!
1. No Criticism About Name Capitalization
Yes, we are aware of the spelling debate of the names of Pokémon, and we will not tolerate people criticizing others' works for whatever side of the debate you fall on. It’s petty and shouldn’t have any bearing on enjoyment of a story. Anyone caught trying to criticize or bash another user for this will be banned after a warning.
2. No Demoralization of Other People
Disparaging of other community members is strictly forbidden. This kind of behavior is toxic and uncalled for. We are a welcoming and inclusive space, offences to this rule will be dealt with harshly.
3. No “Story Fragment” Posts
If you wish to post a fragment or teaser, add it to your self-rec posts.
Otherwise, no posts of story fragments will be allowed on their own.
4. No Charging for Beta-Reading/ Critiques
Strictly forbidden, nobody is to be soliciting money for any kind of writing services on this sub.
5. No Content Unrelated to Pokemon
It’s a pokemon-fic community.
6. No fandom Drama
Drama from other writing communities is strictly forbidden. Offenders will be warned, then left with a temp ban. Further offences will result in a permanent ban.
7. No Low Effort Standalone Fanfic Story Posts
Any Self-rec posts advertising your own story must not be simple “new update pls read” posts. Put effort into these. They are your ads. They should make me want to read your story, not get annoyed by their existence.
Additionally, self-rec posts should only be made after 30k words have been added since the previous update post, or as milestone posts after completing a story arc.

It can be anything.
Hi, everyone!
Here's our weekly spot where you can feel free to chat about your current WIP, whether you just started brainstorming or you've written over a hundred chapters and you're still going.
There's no minimum requirement to read/comment on another story before posting; the point is to interact, not advertise. :)
Contest mode is enabled so everyone can get an equal chance at being seen.
I'm still the author of Pokémon Gray, the fanfiction in which Ash, as World Champion, travels to Unova for the first time with the goal of helping a young Trainer named Anita, aesthetically based on the female playable character from Pokémon Black and White, become Champion. Serena also travels with them, as well as another original character, named Carlos. And now we come to the problem. I had one of my usual strange ideas. Insert a Doppelgänger of Serena, called Unfrata. (Then we'll see about the English name later, since, as I imagine you've understood, it's a pun. Unfrata, roughly means angry, full of resentment) Which is the complete opposite of Serena. Where Serana is sweet, cute, graceful, thoughtful... well, you know her, Unfrata, she's a rude, careless, rude girl. Unfrata is a Trainer who challenges gyms, and her team is the opposite of Serena's (so all the Pokémon, except Pancham, are male. Do you think it's a good idea? And how could I call her in English, sending the pun (which requires the use of a "dialect" name and not in official English)?
And finally, what do you think of Doppelgängers in general?
Basically, I wanna hear how do people go around writing certain water types. And I don't mean pokemon like Greeninja or Milotic or any water type that can realistically live/move on the land. I mean, how do you make pokemon like Goldeen or Carvannah function in battles, other than making water the setting of the battle. Do you just have them plop around on the ground? Or are they floating.
Personally, I have solved this issue by giving an oath to never write a water type like this, but tbh I love Carvannah and I would love to give it to one of my characters in the future.
Hey guys! MD21 here with the first of what will probably be many cries for wisdom.
In my Pokemon long-fic, the protagonist is going up against a trainer who employs, among others, an Alakazam. I have written many battles in this ongoing project already and I usually don't struggle too much with coming up with cool or unique ways to defeat opposing Pokemon...but for some ungodly reason I am drawing a freaking blank here.
How do I write an accurate portrayal of a battle against an Alakazam?
I don't follow the in-game portrayal of Pokemon fights that much. I try to walk a thin line between realism and also providing an entertaining, sometimes over-the-top battle.
So that brings me to the title! How would you, my fellow Pokefic writers, design a win against Alakazam yourselves? The team our protagonist uses is as follows:
Blaziken
Nidoking
Froslass
Pidgeot
Kirlia
Fraxure
As I said, I'm drawing a blank here, so any imput would be very welcome!
In real life sports, commentators, especially the heavily experienced ones, always have the most amazing stories. I feel like a fanfic following around a tournament tv commentator or announcer would be a very entertaining read.
Edit: this also is a great opportunity for MANY character cameos.
Hi, everyone!
This is just a quick FYI that we've cleaned up the rules a bit.
The highlights are as follows:
We're loosening the rules on how many words an unfinished fic needs to have before the author can self-rec it here. But along with that, we're asking that authors actually talk about the fic they wrote a little bit--pitch it to the audience, so we can have an actual conversation about the premise.
Two of our previous rules have been condensed into a more general rule #1. Basically, don't escalate arguments.
While this was a de facto rule already, we wanted to put it in writing as well: NSFW material is allowed for now, but it absolutely has to be labeled and cannot involve underage characters in any way.
That about covers it. You may return to you regularly scheduled fanfic chats.
Basically, I want some less common titles for him. Maybe one per region he visited?
So I need to think of both of their starters I know I want my OC to be a type specialist but I can’t decide on the type I was leaning towards Ghost or Dark or Psychic or Fairy but not sure yet but for Ash I was thinking of a Pokemon better than a disobedient stubborn Pikachu who was not a good starter for a beginner maybe a Eevee or a Growlith haven’t decided that either.
So I am looking for a fanfic where Ash starts with a different Pokemon than Pikachu maybe a Eevee or Sandile or maybe where he decides to specialize in a specific type.
Welcome to Weekly Wonder! This is a feature every Monday where we discuss a specific Pokemon character as well as one of the many Pokemon, discussing tropes using them, favorite fanfics, and ideas and inspiration for your own fics portraying them. It's a free-flow discussion, so feel free to talk among yourselves as long as it's on topic!
Now, onto our first selection! It's everyone's favorite main character of Pokemon Red and Blue, as well as the most beloved mascot in the franchise.
That's right, it's Blue Oak and Eevee! Eh? Eh? I've made little profiles below to sum up their information!
Character Name: Blue Oak
First Seen In: Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow (Generation 1)
Role: Rival (Red, Blue, and Yellow, Fire Red and Leaf Green), Gym Leader (Gold and Silver, Heartgold and Soulsilver), Battle Tree Leader (Sun and Moon, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon)
Iconic Pokemon: Eevee, Kanto Starters, Raticate
Information: Blue Oak is our hometown rival in Red and Blue, who's always ten steps ahead and kinda a jerk. He's seen across the entire journey, up until he becomes Champion in the Indigo League and proving as your final battle in the main story. A skilled trainer with a chip on his shoulder, he's the grandson of the famous Professor Oak, but none of Oak's apparent kindness has rubbed off on him! He mellows out a bit over the next generation, and becomes Viridian City's Gym Leader, before appearing sporadically in challenges across the rest of the games. He returns in Generation 7, appearing as one of the leaders in the Battle Tree, where he's definitely grown up!
Pokemon Name: Eevee
First Seen: Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow (Generation 1)
Pokemon Number: #133
Category: Evolution Pokemon
Type: Normal
Information: Eevee is a darling in the fandom, for two big reasons. One, it's adorable, a brown little dog-cat-fox thing covered in fur and love. The other is that it has not one, but eight evolution choices, all based off different elemental types! Eevee is a big mascot in the franchise, behind only the yellow mouse, and makes a great starter due to its versatility.
What are your favorite fics featuring Blue or Eevee? What tropes do you think fit them, or would you associate with them in fics you've read? What ideas do you have for them? Let everyone know in the comments!
I can't remember what it's called, but the premise is that Ash finally gets the courage to confess to Misty, but she rejects him, so he's about to unalive himself when May stops him, they get married, have a kid, then May dies, and then Ash and Misty start to date but he gets stabbed from Misty's stalker and almost dies. Any and all help is greatly appriciated
30K/50K into my Nanowrimo project, which is an Ashsekai (Reincarnator as Ash Ketchum).
I've been having a heavy starter debate with myself. Literally every scene I've written features a different starter with different squad members. Originally, it was going to be Pikachu at the canon time, possibly obtained earlier than in Canon. But more and more candidates have wormed their way into the creative process.
I am refering in a gym / rival / League Battle, possibly in the finals. I want to make It from the of the move aproaching the opponent (like those shots in the anime). The Battle is not interrupted and the move makes contact. Give me sugerences
Hi! I'm Lettie, a trial admin at the Pokémon Fanfiction Discord who was also appointed to this subreddit. I have far more familiarity at the Discord than I do the Reddit community, but I'm excited to help out.
I'm taking the initiative to announce some updates to the Reddit, as well as some pending updates to the Discord!
Firstly, a few moderators were appointed to both this subreddit and the Discord. I'll let the others introduce themselves if they'd wish and any goals or projects they have that they might want to share, but on my part, I'm hoping to start some cool engagement-boosting events.
Second, the Discord is getting a much needed rules overhaul. I'm currently drafting it up, and it should be finalized within the month if all goes well. Expect clarity and consistency instead of harsher rules. They will be announced in the Discord's #announcements channel when they're ready!
Then there's the part you're hopefully excited for. Events and features! Think things that are going to be a regular occurrence for you to partake in and get the creative juices going.
I'll be tossing some pinned threads up over the week. Below is a brief summary of the events and features I have planned:
*Random Gen (lasts until next year for the first run): People are assigned a select Pokemon generation (and optionally characters or Pokemon from that generation) to write a 500+ word story about. All of the stories are collated into a collection at the end of the event. Will have further rules when set up.
*Weekly Wonder (every week, lasts all week): May change to monthly if it proves better, but the idea is that during each period, a single canon character and Pokemon that have not been spotlighted before will be given a shared discussion post. The idea is to talk about relevant tropes, fics using the character or Pokemon, and to encourage and advise on writing fics about them.
*Review Trade (posted every month): This one's pending some logistics but the idea is a static thread posted every month to discuss sharing reviews and beta trading services for fics ranging from WIP to recently updated or posted. I'm thinking 'old unupdated fics' won't be part of it, to encourage writing every month, but I'll have to figure out the cutoffs. Either three or six months, maybe?
*Prompt Event (starting in March): This one's a bit of a surprise as I plan logistics. Expect some info by mid-December should all go well!
Let me know if you have any questions, event ideas, thoughts on them, or need any help! This thread's open to comments.
I have been desperately trying to find some SI fics where MC actually uses the meta knowledge for his/her advantage. I have read Pokemon trainer Vicky and I am trying to find more like that . Pls recommend some fics if you know
From what I can recall, ash has a starter who can use powder snow move, gets a giant heracross that’s either the guardian or the child of the guardian of Viridan forest, meets the guardian of mount moon, gets a bisharp(I think) and gets vision of mew two attack on the st Anne (I think it’s where it happened) before it happens.
I went on fanfiction.net for the first time in a while and all I see is him hating n shit. It's not even related to pokemon most of the time.
Is this a common occurence that I missed out on?
I'm just confused tbh.
Heya, Im currently writing an episodic fic revolving around telling tiny stories (1k-2k words) from each Legendary's POV.
I wanted to know if there are any good recommendations with the same premise so I can check out what others have written before me.
Thanks in advance.
So, I've heard the many versions of different ships, and I know it's short for relationships, but there are terms that are beyond me, like armourshipping. Can someone please clear this up for me and possibly explain the other kinds that they may know about. I feel a bit outdated...
Writing a dual POV story with two MCs. Beginning of the story - one of them gets to sink into silent depression, the second one gets some spicy steamy time. The difference is noticable, to say at least. You can clearly tell I play favourites...(as of right now, that is).
But yeah, any of you have a favourite character in your fanfic that you just... like... can't have anything bad happening to them ever?
It's been bugging me so I'm hoping someone around here can help! I remember finding it on FFN, in the mid-2010s (maybe around 2015??)
The most strong detail I can remember is that the main character was an Eevee living in the wild. At some point in the middle of the story, during an altercation with a rival Pokémon (if I had to guess maybe a Persian? But I really don't remember), the Eevee falls into a rocky river and nearly drowns, but instead evolves into a Vaporeon and survives. The very next chapter was titled "I'm a Vaporeon" and the main character has to get used to their new form.
This was definitely a chaptered thing with more going on than just evolving, but that's the thing that always sticks out in my head. Maybe it's a longshot because I'm remembering based on one memorable detail but I thought I'd ask anyway. Thank you!
It has lucas centric, lucas and barry like men, i dont remember if they are gay or bi, but all i remember its a journey fic from sinnoh then i think lucas has a crush on riley, then barry's type is volkner, yeah i don't remember that much
My main character (MC) will have a shiny Ralts that evolves into a Gallade, along with an Arcanine and Serperior So far, the worldbuilding in my story will be harsh, similar to other fanfics like traveler, challenger, uprising, trainer and many more, I can touch the skies however mine will include slice of life, romance and other things as well. Below is my initial synopsis and some ideas I've developed.
The MC lives in a region (Idk yet might go with kanto) and comes from a wealthy, traditional family (similar to the Blackthorn clan). I’m unsure if the MC’s parents should work directly in Pokémon-related fields, like owning a company that sells vitamins, Pokémon gear, or items that boost Pokémon, or if they should just be businesspeople. In this world, children under ten can have Pokémon as long as they’re non-dangerous (like kids from school have it as well like in the anime) but their actual journeys only begin depending on the region’s safety. (ex like if a region is too dangerous like routes so the age they start will be like 16) Starter Pokémon in each region are extremely rare, reserved for top-performing students, while other young trainers often receive their first Pokémon from a city's gym leader or as a family gift. Like how proffesor oak sponsored ash, gary and other 2 trainers, my idea is that each city will have a school and the top 3 student of each school would atleast have a rare pokemon as much as possible kanto starters despite it being very very rare (like bulbasaur). Top students from each city may earn a chance to receive a regional starter, though this concept is still tentative as I want starters to remain rare.
Each city has multiple gyms, with minor gyms supplementing the main eight, these are the region's strongest and serve as the top competition. Gym Leaders adapt their teams based on a trainer’s experience, using weaker Pokémon against newer trainers. Trainers must pass tests in their schools to demonstrate their Pokémon knowledge and every 2 or 3 years, all of the gym leaders regardless if they are minor or major one would have a battle to decide who are the top 8 strongest gym leaders.
Trainers can gain sponsorships from individuals or companies, similar to how Ash was supported by Professor Oak. Social media and online forums are prominent in this world and social media, and having a major gym badge would be a big deal. Kids may own a Pokémon if it’s safe and they have parental permission. When they’re old enough to travel, they can receive Pokémon through gifts, breeding, or purchases if they come from wealthier families. Another thing the sponsorships could also happen with companies like the major one's, for example the company who manages a farm (sample rapidash farm), company who makes medicine and etc (similar to i can reach the sky).
The story will also delve into history, like past wars, and touch on aspects often overlooked in canon, such as Pokémon trade limitations. My idea is that there's a trading system online where trainers all around the world/region would trade their pokemon like if i want a corsola from johto then i would post it there then people would send me trade request then the transactions would be like in the anime like how ash request his pokemon from proffesor oak when he's in the pokemon center. The Pokémon world will have inherent dangers. Additionally, there will be YouTubers, "Pokétubers," and Pokémon schools that teach skills like throwing Poké Balls, applying medicine, and understanding rare items like Prism Scales. Ancient Pokémon and alpha Pokémon, especially those from the Hisui region, will be explored, as well as Pokémon life spans and the function of the Pokédex.
I’ll examine ecological impacts on Pokémon, such as how pollution, deforestation, or other human activities affect them. Different Pokémon will adapt to their environments, like those in deserts, icy areas, or volcanic regions. The ethics of Pokémon ownership will be a focus, including laws around which Pokémon can be owned, trainer penalties for mistreatment, and governmental regulations.
Students may continue their study if they don't want to become a trainer and if they do want to have a pokemon like pokemon ranger, breeder, and etc they still have to participate both school and if they want they may also go to a journey, Trainers will have diverse classes and specializations. Some may become Rangers focused on wildlife preservation, Breeders skilled in nurturing Pokémon, or Researchers interested in evolution and the Pokédex. Regional cultures, myths, and folklore will influence how people view certain Pokémon, such as rare species tied to family lineages or religious festivals.
The healthcare system for Pokémon will also be complex, with specialized recovery centers and possibly traditional remedies. For children who don’t wish to be trainers, alternative career paths and the age requirements for starting a journey will be addressed.
The Pokémon battle circuit will be broadcast, similar to televised sports, and advanced technology like Poké Balls will be explored, particularly how they calm Pokémon. Wealthy or high-level trainers may access unique Poké Balls or specialized Pokédexes tailored to regional needs. The role of sponsorships, such as competing companies backing different trainers, will also influence trainers’ resources and status. Trainers may rise through ranks and earn international recognition, unlocking exclusive tournaments, facilities, and even special badges for exceptional achievements.
The story will explore the psychological effects of training, from burnout to anxiety, and the deep bonds trainers form with their Pokémon. Pokémon schools will have various subjects, including Pokémon biology, item crafting, and survival skills, with advanced courses available to experienced trainers.
Finally, I’ll include cultural mysticism and superstitions around Pokémon, where certain species are seen as omens or mythical creatures. Legendary Pokémon might hold religious or philosophical significance, adding a mystical layer to the world. There's so manyy things to add like the things that was explored in fics but not in the anime, and things that was mentioned in pokemon that isn't explored directly, like how social media affects the pokemon word? and the league per region, and including ace trainers and many more, like if a champion is crowned does that mean they are the president of the region? so theoretically like how ash won the alola league? or whatt, and the proffesor per region would also be special like to attain such proffesion would definiely grant them respect.
I wanna know, does any of you guys ever write about protagshipping fanfic? I wanna know how you guys ferl when writing them. Is it fun and also satisfied you? I am writing a Ash Ketchum in Pokemon Horizon Fanfic with Ash and Liko as a pairing in the story
Personally, i have fun writing them as to both of them have fun chemistry to be written in the story.
Does any of you with different protagshipping also felt that way??
I read a fic where a domestic Pikachu gets lost in a forest and needs to learn to survive in the wilderness with the help of a tribe of pikachus - it was called “The Thunder Clan” and I absolutely loved it.
What are some Pokémon stories that has little to no human involvement that’s finished that you liked? Mystery Dungeon fics work too but I don’t want to limit myself to just them.
Also, the longer the better lol.
Morning Everyone!
It’s been a while since I have last posted but I’ll give you a rundown. Reddit has decided to strip me of my mod status after several attempts to update the sidebar with the Discord subreddit link. Reason being is that I’ve been marked as Inactive (which is justified as I haven’t been participating in the subreddit for months). For those who aren’t aware, an Inactive Moderator receives a partial lock on their Mod Status as a security measure to protect the subreddit. I have reached out to u/katrinasforest to assist me in getting back in but truth be told, r/PokemonFanfiction will need more active mods.
The subreddit has already reached over 9,000 subscribers. Reddit recommends at least three active moderators to help maintain the subreddit. If you wish to become a moderator, please put in a Mod Message. If you want more information, reach out to me on the Pokémon FanFiction Discord server. You will need to have been a member of the Pokémon Fanfiction community for some time and are familiar with other members before your request can be granted.
I would like to also thank u/gameboykid11 for creating the subreddit back in 2012 and u/addicted_to_reddit (Zelcore) in entrusting me the privilege to moderate r/PokemonFanfiction. As I have stated before, I will be focusing all efforts on the Discord server where I will be setting up a new Admin team. I will stick around and work on things in the back end but I will leave all moderating to the new team. It’s been a pleasure serving all of you. Thank you for your support for all these years.
And also, I want to say I’m sorry for all of the experiments I’ve tried to help improve the server but have not work out and I would like to thank those who have the patience to put up with me in those trials.
Anyway, I’ll see you around!
Cheers!
EDIT: Okay, I'm back in. Going to start looking through mod candidates now. Thanks again, Kat!
I am still the writer of Pokémon Gray, the fanfiction in which Ash, as World Champion, travels to Unova for the first time with the aim of helping a young Trainer named Anita, who was aesthetically based on the female playable character from Pokémon Black and White, to become Champion. Serena also travels with them, as well as another original character, named Carlos. Now, I don't want to tell the ins and outs of the story, which is what I tried to do while writing the post, getting lost in kilometer-long digressions. I'll get straight to the point. In Italian we have a saying that makes me smile "far vedere i sorci verdi", literally, to show the green mice, which comes from an air division of the army and the livery of their planes, which featured green mice. The meaning of the saying is I'm going to humiliate you or I'm going to defeat you. Which in the world of Pokémon is easily represented by showing green Rattata (or any other mouse Pokémon). But how can I render it in English, while maintaining the meaning and reference to Pokémon?
