Baseball 16-21 (5-16)
This Tuesday we traveled to #22 WVU and lost 6-3. Our Wednesday game where we host St. Bonaventure we won via mercy rule 17-1 after 7 innings. Our weekend series was @ #6 Clemson. We lost the Friday game 6-4 before splitting the Saturday doubleheader. We won game 1 8-4 before losing game 2 9-2.
No league play this week. Our only games this week is a 3-game series where we host Bryant. Those games are Friday at 6:00, Saturday at 3:00, and Sunday at 1:00
Softball 15-29 (6-15)
All together, a good week for the Panthers. We lost a non-conference game at Ohio State this Wednesday 3-2. Then we won a weekend series vs Syracuse. We won on Friday 8-3, lost on Saturday, 12-3, then won the Sunday rubber match 7-5.
Only one game this week as we host Ohio this Wednesday at 4:00
Lacrosse 5-13 (0-9)
It was a difficult week for the Pitt LAX. We concluded our regular season with a devastating senior day OT loss to Clemson 12-11. In the opening round of the ACC Tourney we faced Clemson again and lost another close one 18-15
The growing pains of a new program are real. This was our third season with a varsity women’s lacrosse program and our second consecutive winless ACC season. Our performance in non-conference play shows that we aren’t entirely pushovers but just couldn’t figure it out in league play. I do wonder what the direction the school is going to go with this program. While I doubt it’s a huge deal, playing off campus can’t help the program. When the program was announced there were plans to play on campus eventually but those have been dropped. I hope Pitt doesn’t view this program as an afterthought just as a way to stay Title IX compliant.

Winner plays Notre Dame in the Quarterfinals on Wednesday
Well, we’ve lost 3 DL starters to the portal and 3 DL starters/#2’s to graduation. Before the exodus, I had Pitt at 2-4 wins next season. Maybe 3 tops now.

Avg 6.4 ppg and 2.3 rebounds this season. Originally played at Temple for 4 years and his last season with the Owls avg 15.3 ppg
Baseball 14-18 (4-14)
On Tuesday we lost our non-conference game at Kent State 5-4 before hosting #7 Duke for a 3-game weekend series. The Saturday doubleheader was all Blue Devils as Duke won the first game 14-4 (7 innings due to mercy rule) and 4-3 in the second. However Sunday the Panthers were able to pull off the upset 11-10.
It is a busy week for the Panthers. First we travel to West Virginia on Tuesday at 6:30. Then on Wednesday we host St. Bonaventure at 5:00 in a makeup game from March. And on the weekend we travel to Clemson for a 3-game weekend series. The games will be Friday at 6:00, Saturday at 2:00, and Sunday at noon.
Softball 13-27 (4-14)
This week began with a 10-2 victory over Akron on Tuesday. Saturday’s doubleheader vs UNC was split as the Tar Heels won game 1 7-2 and the Panthers took game 2 8-2. In the rubber match, UNC took the game and the series 8-1.
This week we begin play by traveling to Ohio State on Wednesday for a 6:00 matchup. We have a weekend series vs Syracuse. Those games will be Friday at 6:00, Saturday at 3:00, and Sunday at 4:00
Lacrosse 5-11 (0-8)
Our week started with completing the Allegheny County sweep with a 19-2 victory over RMU. On Saturday we couldn’t keep up with #16 UNC as we lost 16-9.
Senior night is this Thursday as we face Clemson still looking for our first league win since 2022. Then it’s onto the ACC Tournament. Our first game will be this Sunday as we travel to either Clemson, Virginia Tech, or Louisville in the play-in round. That game will be broadcast on ACC Network.
Football
This week was the Spring Game. The Gold Team beat the Blue Team 17-10. Overall there appears to be some growing pains on offense with some sloppy play but there seems to be some promise here. The new scheme appears to also feature our tight ends which is a nice change of pace. Yarnell clearly looks like QB1 with Holstein as QB2. Also, shoutout to Ben Sauls making a 50 yard FG while fighting all of that wind.
However yesterday Dayon Hayes entered the transfer portal. This is obviously a big loss for the team and the way he talked down his teammates on the way out left a bad taste in everyone’s mouth. We should expect a few more players to transfer out because we are currently over the scholarship limit.

Baseball 13-15 (3-12)
This week we hosted a 3-game series vs Georgia Tech. We lost on Friday 6-3 but were able to rebound Saturday 3-2. In the rubber match the Yellow Jackets were victorious as we fall 7-4.
We start this week with a road trip to Kent State this Tuesday at 6:00. The Panthers host Duke for the weekend series. Those games will be Friday at 6:00, Saturday at 3:00, and Sunday at 1:00
Softball 11-25 (3-12)
A great weekend for our Panthers as we sweep the Friday doubleheader at BC 4-0 & 5-4. We weren’t able to complete the weekend sweep as the Eagles bested us 3-2 on Sunday.
The Panthers are on the road for a mid-week matchup against Akron on Tuesday at 4:00 before hosting our weekend series against UNC. Those games will be Friday at 6:00, Saturday at 3:00, and Sunday at 1:00.
Lacrosse 4-10 (0-7)
Our league woes continued as we fell to #3 Syracuse 16-7 to fall to 0-7 in ACC play.
We play our final non conference game of the season as we host Robert Morris at Highmark Stadium Tuesday at 6:30. Then on Saturday we host UNC at noon.
Apologies for the delay in this week’s post, personal life got in the way. So this week’s post will feature everything since the last post.
Baseball 12-13 (2-10)
Last week we were on the road. We first traveled to Penn State where we fell 10-1. Then at #13 VT we lost 2 of 3. We fell 5-3 on Thursday and 6-5 on Saturday but pulled off a 7-6 upset on Friday. This Tuesday’s game @ Youngstown State was postponed until Tuesday May 7.
This weekend we host Georgia Tech for a 3-game series. Those games will be Friday at 3:00, Saturday at 3:00, or Sunday at 2:00.
Softball 9-24 (1-11)
This week was a mixed bag. First we fell 10-6 to Miami-OH on Wednesday 3/27. Then we hosted a 3-game series vs Louisville. We lost the first half of our doubleheader vs Louisville 3-2 but came away with our first conference win of the season in the second game 9-4. Louisville still took the series with a 9-0 victory over the Panthers on Sunday.
There have been two schedule updates. First, due to a change in the Big Ten schedule, the Penn State at Pitt game for April 16 has been canceled and will not be rescheduled. And due to weather our game at Robert Morris on Tuesday April 2 has been canceled. The home half of our series against the Colonals is still scheduled to go ahead on Tuesday April 30.
This week we play a 3-game series at Boston College. Those games are Friday at 4:00, Saturday at 4:00, and Sunday at noon.
Lacrosse 4-9 (0-6)
This Saturday we lost big @ #6 Notre Dame 26-5. Then hosting Central Michigan we came away with an 18-3 victory
This weekend we travel to #3 Syracuse this Saturday at 4:00.

Men’s Basketball
Bub Carrington announced he is going pro this week. While a huge blow for this team, incredible news for him and it's great for this team to have multiple NBA draft prospects again.

Prob Bub draft announcement
During the Jamie Dixon Big East era, Pitt men's basketball was consistently good. There are various ways to measure this, but for the sake of argument, I've graphed the end-of-year KenPom Rating back to the 2002-2003 season. (This year's KenPom is early, but ~30-35 doesn't change the graph much.)
End-of-year KenPom rating for Pitt MBB
Starting around the switch to the ACC, there were complaints that Dixon couldn't compete. Which, to be fair, it's pretty clear that Pitt didn't do as well at the start of the ACC era as during our time in the Big East. Yinz can debate why that happened, but Jamie left, and the brief Stallings era began. (Dashed lines) .. let's not talk about those years.
So far, the Jeff Capel era shows significant signs of improvement. Yes, both last year and this year had some rough moments. Yes, this year's team was left out of March Madness. (Hello? ACC looks pretty good now.)
Are we back to consistent top-25 polls and consistent NCAA tournament bids? Nope. Not at all. That should be the standard.
On the other hand, when Pitt switched into the ACC, there were concerns that Pitt "couldn't compete" with UNC and Duke, etc. Well, last year Pitt finished 5th and had a chance to get the regular-season conference title. This year, Pitt finished 4th. So yeah, Pitt can compete in the ACC. Next year might be challenging after losing Blake, but hopefully Bud decides to stay another year, giving the team a strong core.
In other words, the committee needs to re-think their bias, but I'm hoping for another good year in 24-25. Keep the Pete (and the Zoo) rocking!
Baseball 11-10 (1-8)
The week started out the week against Kent State where a 5-run rally in the 8th allowed up to come away with a 12-8 victory. However our ACC woes continued as we were swept by #14 UVA this weekend. Those scores were 18-2 (in 7 due to Mercy Rule), 10-4, & 8-2.
We’re on the road this week. First on Tuesday we travel to Penn State for a 5:30 matchup. Then we have a 3-game series at VT. Due to the Easter holiday, those games will be Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. All at 4:00.
Softball 8-21 (0-9)
Our game against Penn State was rescheduled for April 16 leaving our series vs FSU as our home opener. The FSU series also faced scheduling issues as the Friday game was moved on Sunday. Regardless, the results of all 3 games were the same. The Panthers were mercy ruled in the 5th 13-4, 10-0, and 17-7.
This weekend we stay at home. First we host Miami (OH) on Wednesday at 4:00. Then we host Louisville in a 3-game series. Those games will be Friday at 6:00, Saturday at 3:00, and Sunday at 1:00.
Lacrosse 3-8 (0-5)
Our week started with a convincing 21-5 victory over Kent State. However, our league woes continued as we were on the wrong end of the good score vs VT 13-9
This weekend we travel to Notre Dame for an 11 AM matchup.
Wrestling
This week was the NCAA wrestling championships. We finished 26th as a team. Here are how our 7 wrestlers that qualified faired
141: Cole Matthews 2-2 (Round of 16)
149: Finn Solomon 1-2
165: Holden Heller 1-2
174: Luca Augustine 1-2
184: Reece Heller 1-2
197: Mac Stout 2-2 (Round of 16)
285 Dayton Pitzer 1-2
Gymnastics
In the first ever ACC Gymnastics Championship the Panthers came away tied for third place. 2 of our gymnasts medaled. Hallie Copperwheat tied for second on the beam while Ewing tied for second for her floor routine.
Swimming and Diving
This weekend was the Women’s Swimming and Diving. 4 of our swimmers and divers participated.
Sophie Yendell finished 20th in the 50 Free and 17th in the 100 Fly
Claire Jansen finished 38th in the 100 Back ad 30th in the 200 Back
Mariana Osorio Mendoza finished 30th in Platform
Jess Vega finished 35th in Platform.
Next week is the men’s championship
The ACC was disrespected this year. Or maybe just PITT.
UNC, Duke, Clemson and NCSU all made the sweet 16.
UVA got embarrassed in a play in game they didn't belong in, it should have been this PITT team. Some WF fans might also feel snubbed.
I don't really have a point, just ranting.
Go NC State!
Men’s Basketball 22-11 (12-8)
The Panthers started the ACC Tourney with a game vs Wake. We were able to survive a late push to defeat the Deacs 81-69. Then we faced 1-seed UNC in the Semis. We played a great game keeping it close the whole time but were unable to convert 72-65.
In a normal year this resume would be enough but the story of the conference tourneys were the Bid Stealers. UAB stole the AAC bid. NC State stole the ACC autobid. And Duquesne stole the A-10 bid for their first dance since 1977. This all conspired to cost us a March Madness bid. Pitt declined our invitation to the NIT ending our season.
This was a season of what-ifs. We couldn’t stay consistent enough to make ourselves a lock come tourney-time. The future looks bright with some of our underclassmen but it hurts that this was the way Hinson’s career ended.
Baseball 10-7 (1-5)
This week we were finally able to host games in our third attempt. In our home-opener we Mercy-Ruled Akron 13-3 in 8 innings. The next day vs Youngstown State we fell in 10 innings 7-6. We opened our first home ACC series vs BC with a 12-5 win but fell in the final 2 games 16-10 and 7-3.
This week we host Kent State on Tuesday at 3:00. Then we host UVA for a 3-game series this weekend. Those games will be Friday and Saturday at 3:00 and Sunday at 1:00.
Softball 8-18 (0-6)
A tough week for the Panthers began with a 3-1 loss to FIU. Then at VT we were swept 18-0 (in 5 due to Mercy Rule), 8-4 on Saturday, and 9-0 in Sunday (in 5 due to Mercy Rule)
We hope to rebound with our first home games of the season. First on Tuesday we host Penn State. Then we host a 3-game series against FSU. Those games will be Friday at 6:00, Saturday at 3:00, and Sunday at 5:00
Lacrosse 2-7 (0-4)
At #10 UVA the Panthers slump continued as we lose 19-10.
2 games for us this week. First we travel to Kent State on Tuesday at 4:00. Then we host VT this Saturday at 11:00 AM.
