Pierre Deux: The Return of Pierre

Hello - I have taken over the subreddit and removed posting restrictions. I intend to pick up where the previous mod left off, and somewhat revive this sub. No telling if this will succeed, however I believe in keeping the subreddit open for discussion.

Moving. Feel free to follow

When I requested to take over this subreddit as I saw it had no moderators and had been basically abandoned, I intended to try to revive it.

As it often does, however, life got in the way. Worse, Reddit has gone to great lengths to drive everyone away. Lengths that include astronomical fees, lies, and deceit against some of the very people that helped make reddit, reddit.

I have had several accounts and witnessed many disappointing actions taken by those that run this site but with the new API changes and the way it's been handled (here is just one example, if you're interested) I will be restricting this subreddit and the others that I moderate and I'll be demoting myself as moderator. In the case of this subreddit, that means that it will be left without one again.

I welcome any and everyone to follow me to Lemmy which is a federated (think decentralized sort of like email. With reddit, everyone must use one set of servers. With Lemmy, like email, I can join gmail and you can join hotmail and we can still message each other) link aggregator similar to reddit.

Once you have an account on a Lemmy server, I have created a "community" as Lemmy calls their version of subreddits for Pierre there as well. Just search communities, be sure to select "all" so you're not limited to just your Lemmy server that you created an account on, and search for "pierre" to join.

Someone stole my headlight.

Title explains it all, really. Went to Cowboy Country Store on Euclid to get gas (would have gone anywhere else of my car wasn't running dangerously low on gas) and after the 30 seconds I spent paying for my gas at the registee, I came out to see I was short one passenger headlight. Just felt like batching about it.

What kind of fresh food is missing?

Hello all!

We recently relocated to the area and are looking to start a micro-farm of some sort. I've visited the local markets and there is some phenomenal tasting produce but it seems like there's a lack of options.

I've been growing food for quite awhile and would love to provide something nourishing the community wants and needs. There are quite a few ideas in my head but need some feedback from those that have been around! This is not something I need to get rich quick with (or at all), just something to make an extra income while caring for my kids and while playing in the dirt! Any ideas?

Also, I'm not interested in trying to compete with existing local growers. So if you know of any I may have missed please let me know. I know about Rawlins, Tomatoes grown about an hour south. Is there a pumpkin producer at Halloween? Small crops are my specialty and I wouldn't mind doing a few different things. I think there are other ideas that can fill a void. Are oyster mushrooms a thing here? They pair great with fish! Does anyone grow fresh herbs for local markets? Raspberries and/or black currants? Does anyone grow worms for bait? I don't mind them! Also considering a small CSA with not so basic veggies (I don't think this would happen before 2023 as I need to adapt my practices to this climate). What are you missing? Do you see a need?

Thank you in advance for any information and thank you for how welcoming everyone is here. It's a breath of fresh (slight humid) air!

Meeting with Senator Thune staff

Hey all, my name is Micayla. I am a SDSU student and a regional organizer for UTST (check out my profile for more info on our organization). Tomorrow we have a meeting with Senator Thune’s health advising staff to discuss if he supports Biden’s plan for expanding rural health infrastructure and jobs as well as plans for rural vaccine distribution.

My question for you all is what do you wish you could ask Senator Thune related to these topics? Or, what do you want to know about his stances related to COVID?

Just Moved to Pierre

Recently graduated from college and moved to Pierre to work for the State. I’m a 22 year old male and was wondering what’s there to do here and how to go about meeting new people.

Originally from Las Vegas but went to college in Rapid City so I’m familiar with the state but not Pierre. Any recommendation on hiking, places to eat, sports or video game leagues, coffee shops, and just how to go about meeting new people in this town around my age? Excited to be here!

Pronunciation

Hi... Non South Dakotan here. How do you pronounce Pierre? When I was on vacation near there, I thought I heard people on the radio pronounce it like peer.

Does Pierre have an RC scene?

I’ve been up here nearly a year and all in all, really enjoy the town and 90% of the people. That said, I am big into RC trucks, cars, crawlers, etc., but I see no sign of anyone else around here who’s into the same thing. Rapid City and Bismarck have decent scenes but is anyone in Pierre running RCs?

Culture of Pierre

Hello everyone, I had the pleasure of spending some time in the Black Hills earlier this year, and your state has captured my imagination. I'm about to begin a short story set in South Dakota, with my main character's home base being Pierre. I was hoping that some of you fine folks would indulge me and provide me with your takes on the city.

What do you love about it?

What do you hate about it?

How would you describe the culture of Pierre? What makes it better or worse than say, Sioux Falls or Rapid City?

Where is the rich part of town? The dangerous part?

Any help that you can provide would be fantastic. I don't yet know how my main character feels the city, so I'm open to your influence. I want to do Pierre justice--with all of the good and bad that that entails.

(About the only thing I really know is that it's pronounced PEER and not like the French name.)

Much appreciated!

Greetings /r/Pierre,

I'm creating a Geography Card Game about the United States, and I am looking for an image of a building, monument, statue, park, or physical location to represent the city of Pierre, South Dakota. I have come to this subreddit to learn from you what you believe best symbolizes your city.

Thank you for all of your help in advance and I look forward to learning more about your wonderful city!

New Year's Eve Question

Hey r/Pierre!

So, just had a quick question...some friends and I are looking to do some traveling together next month, and we all decided to fly into Pierre and spend a few days. We're all in our mid 20s and definitely want to take advantage of the local bar scene and see what the city has to offer as far as a nightlife.

I realize we're a few weeks out, but does anyone in this sub know where in Pierre would have the best new year's Eve celebration?

Thanks in advance and looking forward to traveling to your great city and ringing in 2018 with you, Pierre!
