Find Your Pest: M to Z

Note: Do not post questions here. Please post in r/PestControl, or any of the other linked subs. Thank you.

The purpose of this sub is to offer a condensed source of information that will help you control many types of pests that invade homes without having to ask questions and wait for answers. It will also help you decide if seeking professional help is the best course of action.

Most of the information provided here is based on my 30+ years of professional experienced in the field. It is by no means the only way to achieve a good outcome, but these methods and products* have consistently worked for me.

If you don’t find the pest listed here or have a question, post in r/PestControl.

Ants

https://www.reddit.com/r/AntControl/comments/1avlrrp/how_to_control_ants/

Bats

If in an attic, find the entry point and hang one or two plastic snakes by it. Once they leave, they shouldn't try to enter again. Seal it when issue is solved.

If you're finding droppings on a porch or deck, crush a few and see if they crumble. If so it's guano, so look for a place above where it/they may be roosting and hang a small plastic snake up there.

Bald-Faced Hornets

https://www.reddit.com/r/pestcontrol/comments/13wmy2h/is_this_a_bald_faced_hornets_nest_it_appeared/

Bed Bugs

Clean and vacuum thoroughly including all the places BBs can hide. Empty the vac canister in a plastic bag, seal tightly and discard in an outside trash receptacle. If you have a bag vac, put the whole bag in a plastic bag, seal and discard.

Beetles, Food / Pantry

Birds

Nuisance birds can often be repelled by placing plastic snakes where they are roosting. However, if there is an established nest, please wait until the chicks have fledged. You can also use 'bird spikes' to repel them from large areas (Amazon/eBay).

Bird Mites

https://www.reddit.com/r/pestcontrol/comments/14ki9mn/bird_mites/

Bites, Mysterious

https://www.reddit.com/r/pestcontrol/comments/12skbqa/mysterious_bites/

Boric Acid / Diatomaceous Earth / Dusts

With the possible exception of Cimexa dust for bed bugs, there is no reason to use any of these when a product like Alpine WSG is readily available. They are often over applied by non-pros and pros alike, become airborne during the process (and potentially after) and never lose their toxicity. They will additionally defeat the purpose of any sprays that are used in conjunction with them. Avoid them and protect your health.

Larder beetles breed in food sources and natural fibers. Check anything edible you may have in the room to find the source. A thorough cleaning and vacuuming will help.
