I really need to find a good sextet. Right now our group is playing Catching Shadows sextet so that might give you a good idea of our skill level.
I am looking for something with like 1-2 keyboards and then lots of drums/implements. Something similar to Ritual Music style and skill level would be nice.
I’m a studio teacher currently touching up on things I didn’t get to in college, and I would like advice on playing chorales on marimba (4 mallet).
I know the trick of taking out the rolls and striking each chord on the correct count to help with the transitions; but I’d like more tips, tricks, and listening recommendations. I feel like I sound too percussive, and not lyrical enough.
Thanks in advance!
It sounds like it's more than one but I'm mainly interested in the one that sounds like a shaker which gives it that specific groove. The same type of percussion plays for the entire album so I tried to find out what it was and found nothing, just the name of the percussionist (Antonio de Souza)
Just like the title says. The conductor of my band asked us (the percussionists) to look for a piece written for percussion quartet + (British-style) brassband. But after searching for a long time now, I just can't seem to find any pieces written for this.
Does anyone know of one or more pieces existing like this?
Part I’m talking about is 4 bars from the bottom. Concert is in 2 weeks I cannot for the life of me get it up tempo and my wrist starts hurting sometimes because I’m trying to practice it so much. Tempo is 128 and I can get it around 110ish on a good day but have hit a wall trying to get it higher. How do I get this where it needs to be without hurting myself.
its just what the title says, i just need one. lmk thanks!
specifically for the piece clair de lune arr. nick baron for the vibes - clair de lune is a piece that i really love and it would be a dream to learn this piece for my high school senior recital in june 2026. sounds like a lot of time, but i dont have much experience with four mallet percussion. i am a pianist, been playing since i was like 4, and been playing percussion for almost 3 years in school + in community bands outside of school - is there any possibility i could learn this piece without a teacher? how long would it really take? or if i had a teacher, how long would it take to learn ?
just looking for opinions :), thank you all in advance
I’m trying to find this one solo I saw on TikTok but I can’t remember the name of it for the life of me. It starts with 2 eighth note staccato crushes, then it’s followed by 32 singles starting on the “e” of beat 2. If anyone can help me that would be much appreciated
Edit: idk if this helps, but the guy I saw playing it was duetting and Asian woman, and he has long hair that Is usually pulled up in some sort of way. This guy also at the end of everything he plays, does the sticks in and smacks his sticks down on his drum
Those of you that teach, How do you all go about practicing timpani music with a group of students?
I have multiple students doing an audition, and of course we have 1, maybe 2 sets of timpani. Would love to get everyone playing together practicing efficiently without having to wait for their turn to play on the drums.
Hi guys, I have gotten to try round sound marimba mallets but I have yet to try wave wraps due to my location! Wondering if anyone can shoot in some comparisons in terms of weight, tone and anything else? I like the sound of round sound mallets, wondering if wave wraps series is a justified better option or not. Thank you!
Posting here because r/marimba isn't very active When I play marimba, I try to be mindful of holding too much tension in my shoulders, even my toes sometimes. But I've noticed recently from recording myself that I have a facial tick, like my mouth twitches when I'm trying to land a difficult note. What are your experiences/advice with muscle tension?
I am a composer who is about to embark on a work for clarinet, cello and vibraphone. I have never composed for the instrument before so I’m seeking advice from players (or those who know about the instrument) on how to write for the it, the intervals when using burton grip etc. It’s all very new to me so any help is appreciated. I want to know as much as I can before I start composing. Thanks
Theres one where you put your hand in the handle, where you hold it, and more. Which one is it?
Hi, our orchestra owns double rowed bar chimes and I was wondering if there's any effective way to damp both rows fastly, without making too much sound. I know there are chime dampers on the market, but figured they would only work really well with one row bar chimes. Any tips?
So I ordered medium soft marimba mallets from bluhaus but they gave me hard mallets -_- is there a way to make them any softer because I don't have the money to buy more mallets
I noticed my technique is struggling a little bit with mallets and i think the problem is mainly my left hand beingn weak, how do i fix this?(like what can i practice with 2/4 mallets at home) i also tend to swing 16th notes occasionally and im not sure if this is cause by my left hand or what it could be caused by
I’m a band director thinking about getting a Pearl EM1 MalletStation. I’m looking for portable vibes for a jazz combo. However, I don’t have experience with MIDI controllers, audio interfaces, etc.
If we get the MalletStation, as I understand it, we then run it through another device that actually produces the sounds. Our district is non-Apple, so I would need to get a PC or tablet to run it through. Then, do we need to purchase the instrument patches, or does it come with decent ones? Also, if the MalletStation is powered from the device does that mean a tablet isn’t really going to work for this?
Come someone help me figure out exactly what I would need to purchase (keeping in mind that I need to pitch the cost to admin) and generally how it’s set up and run?
Hi, I'm an intermediate marimba player and have wanted to buy some of my own mallets.I don't have a good music store near me to allow me to test out a lot of mallets so I want advice. I prefer warm sounding to articulate, and I also prefer heavier mallets. Money isn't a big problem but I'd say a max of 50 dollars a pair. Any suggestions?
Hi people,
I've been a marimba player for quite a long time and all I have are marimba mallets. But for some reason, I need to play vibraphone in an ensemble later on. There are both quiet and solo passages in the ensemble piece. Are there any mallets that are suitable (I prefer rattan more)? I've heard of balter blues and IP 251s. Which pairs should I buy? Any better recommendations?
For me at least, the suspended cymbal is overrated. This mainly stems from me being put on it almost every concert band piece, but I find it to be too boring and not really diverse in terms of playing style.
Does anyone now what the percussion instrument is which sounds like trickling water at 1:43?
