Why in the world was the Performing Arts Rehearsal Center tent pitched all the way out to the other side of the battlefield, far far away from, well, everything? It didn’t make it any easier for people with mobility problems or those transporting instruments. I took one trek there for a class (that was actually more of a lecture) and the heat and distance just about made me turn back.
I’ve heard conflicting accounts about this. But just about all the musicians I know hated it and wound up boycotting classes there. (I actually canceled the class I was teaching there because exactly at that time is when we got pouring rain and hail, but if the weather had remained hot and sticky, few people would have shown up anyway.)
I saw on the website that RV parking slots are available. Electric and non-electric hookups. My question is, is the payment a one time fee or per day? Also are regular RVs allowed or do they have to be decorated and styled to the era? How early would one recommend signing up for pennsic to secure a RV slot as well? Any advice welcomed!
Playing during a battlefield Vigil for Sir Gui of the East.
When we troll in, should we already be in garb? Or is it a common/acceptable practice to set up camp in mundane clothes then change?
Title says it all. You can just go a mile down 422 East and do a u turn at the next exit. I just wanted to warn people before someone does a Walmart run.
By the way: 20lb bag of ice at Sam's Club is $2.95. The same size bag of ice at Cooper's is $6.95.
Hello, what is the situation for gluten free options at the food court? The Market store?
This is in response to the poster(s) who asked for a link about the two firewood dealers who advertised their services for the Pennsic 51 festival (on Facebook) Here is a screenshot of the posting I was referring to. We hope everyone is enjoying the festival, so far.
I am planning to do some shopping, but I don't know what's available. So, if I can't get some of these things for sure at Pennsic, I will buy some stuff off prime real quick before I leave for PA on Friday!
I called the number on a truck I saw delivering wood to a nearby camp and he said it'd be $225 for half a load. I heard it's a new guy. Does anyone have any other/cheaper options?
Edit: I'm now also looking for the contact info to "Dan the woodman" and "Jameson Run" as well.
Double edit: My camp just received our half load for $60 from Brian. Not sure why all the confusion. If you have links, you should post them next time instead of insinuating one should dig for it.
I am looking for a place that professionally cleans canvas tents (panther pavilion). My tent got wet inside its storage tub, and now has mold on it. I am cleaning it myself but want the stains out if possible. I was wondering if there was a service that did this? My google fu only turned up one company based in the UK.
This is my first year attending, and I am curious if there are fresh safe drinking water on site that I can fill water containers with or is it purchase water ony?
I heard that the sites have water spigots, but may not be suitable to drink.
Land One for PW51 here again... just wanted to let folks know that we now have 40 blocks PMAP approved and more are in progress (voting)
The new PMAP voting and approval system for land agents is working well. We'll be looking to make improvements (and soliciting suggestions) for next year, but this new process is SO MUCH BETTER than sending around an email chain...
So we have something like 70% of the blocks eligible for PMAP this year.. if nearly all of them get approved then we will be STARTING land grab with more than 2/3 of blocks already settled.
We're aiming for a smooth and pleasant land grab and as Viscount Edward Zifran of Gendy used to say,
"As goes Landgrab, so goes the war"
He is truly missed
I should probably crosspost this in r/sca
Now is the time to start thinking about your medications during Pennsic, especially if you are staying the full two weeks. I’ve been working in pharmacy for 12+ years now (Certified Technician), so here are some things to consider.
Most insurance plans will allow vacation overrides if you will need an early refill before leaving. Talk to your pharmacy at least a week before leaving, because the insurance override may take a couple days to get approved.
If you are on any controlled medications (such as things for ADHD, strong pain meds, some seizure drugs) that will need to be filled during Pennsic, you’re likely not going to get an early refill due to any combination of state laws, pharmacy rules, or insurance rules. You may need your provider to send a short supply to a pharmacy near Cooper’s Lake (Google will help you find one). If this is a controlled drug RX from outside of the local area, that’s going to immediately raise suspicion from any pharmacy team. The provider should notate that this is a vacation fill. The pharmacy team will still likely call the provider to verify it’s legit (We have a flat policy to do this with every single out-of-state controlled RX). Keep in mind that certain states may consider some drugs controlled, when the FDA does not. (Gabapentin is an example that comes to mind)
If you have anything that needs to stay refrigerated, I can’t help with the logistics of that. You need to have a plan to keep it cold if you don’t have electricity at your camp. Talk to your pharmacist about the excursion info for these drugs. Some refrigerated medications can stay out of the fridge for 30 days until they go bad. Some will only last 24 hours.
If you take any medications in capsule-form, keep them cool because the gelatin of the outer capsule may melt in the heat of a hot tent and compromise the medication.
If your provider is sending a new RX (or your pharmacy is transferring an RX), keep in mind that some insurances are contracted with specific pharmacy franchises, so your copay may be different than you are used to. And if you are on Medicaid, you may not be able to use it outside of your home state, with a few exemptions (for example, I’m in Maine and close to the NH border, so our pharmacy can process NH Medicaid). Patients with VA coverage can usually only fill at VA facilities, so keep that in mind if it’s relevant to your situation, too.
If you have any questions, be sure to talk to your pharmacist. There’s a reason they have a Doctorate in Pharmacy.
And lastly, don’t forget to pack your meds. We had a campmate that forgot his blood pressure medication one year and he needed to visit a local urgent care to get things taken care of.
(This will also be posted on several SCA Facebook groups after work)
Hey all, I heard talked about on the pennsic Facebook posts about a pride parade at pennsic. I have never attended and wanted to join as a queer person. I made a post about it on said Facebook page and was informed that it isn't a LGBTQIA+ pride but rather a Lake Pride parade and not affiliated with the queer community.
Does anyone have any further information as calling it a pride parade then saying it's not for the queer community is rather confusing to me.
Are there specific queer events on site that I have missed for the past 13 years I've been attending war?
I realized I haven’t seen this covered anywhere in my research so far. We are planning on camping outside of Pennsic as first time attendees, and coming each morning and leaving again at night. This is an option, right?? Camping on-site seemed like too much for our first year when we don’t know what’s going on or how everything goes. Same price as not camping on-site I assume?
Secondly, if we are staying one week but it’s in the middle of the two “weeks” (ex July 31-Aug 6) do we pay for the two week pass or the one week pass?
Thank you!!
I am reposting this since I will be at pennsic both weeks and available if anyone should need assistance this year. Please pass the word along to anyone you know who relies on a mobility scooter at war.
First, let me say that I am not a certified scooter repair technician, I'm just a handy person who understands mechanical and electrical things. The service I am offering is meant as a temporary solution to get you to the end of war, when you can get your scooter to a proper repair shop. If your scooter is under warranty, I may void the warranty if I work on it.
Services I can provide (some examples):
I am offering these services free of charge, but you are responsible for purchasing any replacement parts from wherever we are able to locate them. I will have some basic supplies and tools on hand for emergency repairs.
The reason I decided to offer this service is my wife relies on one, and I know how much it would suck if her scooter were to die mid-war. If you know anyone who relies on a mobility scooter at war, pass this information along.
Stop by the Great Dark Horde encampment at E-10 and ask for Direk if you are in need of assistance.
What with solar panels and batteries getting cheaper and easier to employ. How close is your camp to providing it's own power? I've been thinking that having a chest freezer could be reality in 2~3 years by putting up a couple of solar panels on our carport shade and having a large enough EcoFlow or Jackery power station.
Hello all, Land One for PW51 here again... just a quick note to say that we've sent out the land allocation emails to all land agents (we did it last night, June 25th)
If anyone has issues with their assignment they should emil dmland@pennsicwar.org right away.. the deadline for any changes (such as in the rare-ish cases where we were unable to give groups their first choice due to overcrowding and you don't like the block you ended up on, etc... and you'd like to request we work with you to find another location...) that deadline is Tuesday July 2, 2024 at 11:59 pm EDT
We need to set a deadline so that we can move on to the next stage - sending out PMAP eligibility letters, and also because any moves/changes need to happen sooner rather than later so your blocks have enough time to negotiate)
If you are a land agent for a group which had at least one person pre registered, you should have received your land allocation email by now. If you haven't please email me right away.
Yours In Service,
DMLand - PW51
For me, I need at least three new linen gowns. I'm hoping to finish one this upcoming weekend. :-) I might also get to one of the sari turned 1500's Venetian gowns but we'll see.
Just stopped in the Pilot last night and it looks like they did a bunch of work on a fast charging station that’s going in. Not sure if it’ll be ready within a month but it fills in a big gap between exit 113GC(Tesla only, Ford/Rivian w adapter). And exit 78(Tesla/ multiple CCS)
If your pre registration Pennsic LandGroup section says
Landgroup Not Listed
or
Not filled in
and you haven't contacted me at dmland@pennsicwar.org by Saturday June 22, 2024 11:59 EDT, We'll be assuming you're Individual Camping (singles)
Most importantly, if you were planning on camping with a registered group, but your pre reg says one of those things, then your group is not going to get credit for your 250square feet... Your land agent may or may not allow you to camp with the group if you didn't pre reg with them (some are more strict, others more forgiving - it's up to them)
NOTE that we can put merchants staying in their merchant spaces in a "pseudo group" called MERCHANT and those who have RV spots reserved, We can put you into RV CAMPING. Having folks in the right category really helps us when we look at numbers to know how to allocate resources (like our Singles Liaison team).
This is a courtesy to you in case your pre reg still says Not filled in or Landgroup not listed... there is basically 1 day left for us to assist you to get into the correct group before we have to lock it all down in preparation for land assignment.
If you say "geez you've said this a lot", then good, I guess that means We've gotten the message out and anyone who didn't hear it: at least I can say I tried.
Deputy Mayor of Zoning and Planning (Land) - PW51
Specifically I'm looking for an affordable set of hakama and kosode to wear. Is there a merchant on site that specializes in this or anyone know a site to get some? Amazon has some cheaper looking "costume" options but I want something durable.
Also worth noting I'm a bigger guy (6'2 260lbs)
Hello all you wonderful folk, I am here to soak up as much information as I possibly can before Pennsic this year. I'm an apprentice bladesmith going on the road full-time on a circuit, and I'm so green to this life I could be called Grassbeard. I'll be riding/driving in a sprinter van full of tools, so space is a matter of consideration. At Pennsic, the only person I'll know there is my mentor, as my partner is staying in Texas to look after our home.
I will be bringing a tent, sleeping cot, blankets, all the garb I can muster, rations, first aid supplies (anti chafe and blister stuff, as I am a larger guy), and a lantern or two. What else would you all recommend to bring with me, as a solo camper?
On top of this, I have a very basic understanding of how pennsic works. I saw land grab opens at noon on the 7-26, I'm aware that the first week is peace week, and the second week is war week. I'm afraid that's the extent of my knowledge.
I'm sure I'll look back on this post in a few years and laugh at myself, but going without my partner to a state I've never been, and with incredible amounts of people, I'm an anxious mess. I'm doing my best to combat said anxiety with knowledge and insight, so I greatly appreciate any and all advice offered.
Thank you all for your time.
I’m all registered and ready to go! I have a set of folks I’m going with and have been prepped a little by them, but I truly have no idea what to expect.
I started going to events last month with the Midrealm Crown Tourney, and later this month am going to the Baronial Border Wars, as well as planning on a few smaller meetups between now and Pennsic. So I’ll have a little bit of SCA experience under my belt, but not much.
I’m planning on being there for peace week + a few days. Anything I should expect or be prepared for? What’s a good (food not included) spending budget for an event like this? How’s the accessibility, for both mentally and physically disabled folks? Any general advice you have for a first timer?
Luckily the folks I’m going with are pretty seasoned at this, so I’m not too worried, but I want to be as prepared as possible because this sort of trip is pretty big for me (I’m disabled and will be traveling from Michigan).
I don't know if this is allowed. Many apologies if it is not, and mods please delete, but my late husband and I camped in W05 for many, many years, and I was wondering if any of our old friends are still there. Is there any public map of land assignments, or does anyone here know the groups camping W05 these day?
