His movies make for perhaps the most rewarding rewatches of any director I can think of

I watched TWBB earlier this year and was disappointed by the fact that it wasn’t as good as No Country for Old Men, another powerhouse film from 2007. As time went on, I found myself rewatching scenes from TWBB more and more. Certain moments, musical cues, scenes, or entire sequences got stuck in my head.

I found myself really wanting to rewatch the whole thing, and finally did just that. I’m amazed by how essential a rewatch is to appreciating the film as a whole, and just how much it makes the film better.

I got the same feeling while watching The Master (and rewatched Punch-Drunk Love just a couple days after my initial viewing) and was wondering if anyone knows just what PTA does differently that makes his films so much denser than others, and why rewatches are so essential to his filmography.

Just watched 'Almost Famous' [Cameron Crowe, 2000]

and it still holds up as a wonderful coming-of-age story set in the 70s such as Licorice Pizza. And Philip Seymour Hoffman plays in it, too!

Just watched The Master for the first time in a decade and this scene brought tears to my eyes.

Doris. She got rid of you right? She saw you for what you are. Selfish, and alone. You should go into the hospital with your mother, because that's where you belong. Because you're sick, and you're tired, and you need to be alone - away from people.

Back Beyond

For me, personally, The Master has shaped my entirety in ways that I can’t put into words. I have “Quell” tattooed on my arm…

But, honestly, following this amazing page—Jonny Greenwood hasn’t been mentioned as much as he should be for bringing the environment of PTA’s world into life as he is credited for. From ‘There Will Be Blood’, all the way to ‘Licorice Pizza’, Jonny has created scores like no other—and listening to his scores has been such an escape. Dude is a genius and I just want to just thank him, and PTA for collaborating on such transcendent pieces of work, especially ‘The Master’.

For me, personally—‘Back Beyond’ is one of the greatest works of music and it’s all thanks to PTA, Jonny, Joaquin, Phillip, Amy and the rest.

So like basically Licorice Pizza changed my life

Guys. I saw this movie in theaters on Christmas Eve and since then I've watched it 30 times (probably even more). Licorice Pizza changed lives. Cinema can only go down from here. I have nothing to add I just thought I should let everyone know it's the best movie ever made

(Edit: Yall stop judging I wouldn't have posted this if I knew it would be so controversial lmao. Let me love what I love 🙏)

Shampoo (1975) and Boogie Nights

Just watched Shampoo for the first time and couldn’t help but think that Warren Beatty’s character was an inspiration for Dirk Diggler.

The way he calls every girl baby, the comic over-the-top outfits, girls talking about his cock, the short fuse temper.

If it wasn’t a direct inspiration, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Mark Wahlberg studied this role to prep.

While we've got all of this time on our (clean) hands, waiting for the "Battle" to begin, anyone else think it was odd when Alana dispensed the soap first and *then* got her hands wet? I've always done the opposite... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Incomprehensible line in Licorice pizza

Hello,

In the scene where Alana confronts her father after he kicks Lance out of the house because he refused to do something Jewish at dinner, there's a line from the father that I don't understand: after she speaks he says "But he's Jewish!", when first of all Lance isn't Jewish and on top of that the father shouldn't say that since he's Jewish himself.

Here is the link to watch the scene I am talking about: https://youtu.be/xkOKFw9bD68

Where's the Criterion and 4k love for PTA?

I think it's absolutely ridiculous that I can get a directors cut of FUCKING ARMAGEDDON on criterion, but the only PTA film they've done is PDL and it's not even 4k???

I tweet them constantly about it. Nothing.

Come on guys. What gives here. I know this has been discussed before but I'm just frustrated.

And I've heard the arguments about "he doesn't have the time" or whatever. That's nonsense. He could make the time. I understand the proess and it's not that time consuming (for him anyway). "He doesn't want them on 4k". Why? He's never said that. This is conjecture.

Sorry for the rant. Hope the leaks about Boogie Nights and TWBB getting a 4k are true.

Hoping for a Boogie/Magnolia/Inherent Vice WB box set in December.

PTA reference in Hubie Halloween?

This may be totally wrong and odds are it is but was just watching Hubie Halloween starring Adam Sandler and there is a scene where Hubie is talking to his mom about a neighbour. In this scene Hubie talks about a previous family that lived next door called the “Anderson’s” and Hubie’s mother went on to say the Anderson’s would always set off fire crackers.

This made me think maybe Sandler had a little fun with his buddy PTA and tossed a little PTA into the script. Was obviously thinking of the great fire cracker scene in Boogie Nights when this was mentioned along side the use of the name Anderson’s. I could be completely cooked right now but does this make sense to anyone else LOL

Visual References

Visual references

We all know pta is one of the most original directors in terms of subject matter and just atmosphere of his films. Are there any visual references you have seen in his films?

TWBB scenes

just to say that the transition in which we jump time from Mary and HW jumping down the stairs to their marriage could be the best single cut in cinema history.

also the flashback to a small playin act between Daniel and HW after their final separation is one of the most heartbreaking things ever put to screen.

which other cut in the history of movies with big passage of time comes to mind?

Daniel Plainview’s Sexuality

I always saw Daniel as asexual. Obviously has no interest in whoring it up with Henry at the weird little bar they go to. Although Eli claims he’s “lusted after women” there is no evidence of this. It would seem that any affection Daniel is capable of he reserves for children. He clearly has a fondness for Mary and an urge to protect her (and a need to own Abel, “I’ll take care of you.”)

Despite all of this, is it possible that H.W.’s father and Daniel were more than friends? The father gives Daniel a look while he’s working that makes it seem as if they were close in some capacity. That would be the only reason Daniel would take HW, despite his claims of needing “a sweet face”. This is just an idea that I don’t necessarily believe in but I find Daniel’s sexuality or lack thereof fascinating.

There Will Be Blood is my favorite movie partly because of the mystery of Daniel. I don’t want any of these questions answered, but I love to ponder them.

Why does the camera zoom in on H.W. In this scene?

This scene has always stood out to me as odd. The zoom in on H.W. then back to Daniel seemed like it was intentional. However, the dialogue doesn’t seem to indicate a reason. Can anyone speculate as to why this was done?

Did "Remains of the Day" (1993) inspire "Magnolia" (1999) ?

Last week I watched "Remains of the Day" by James Ivory and after the viewing, while I listened to Richard Robbins score for the movie, I thought that the movie and his score were very similar to "Magnolia".

Firstly, I found some similarities betwwen Richard Robbins score with Jon Brion score but, mostly, I found various thematic similarities like a bigger than life storyline intricate in a very personnal one, the relationship between a dying father and his son, characters that can't express their feelings to each others,...

I know PTA spoke about the fact that "A Room With A View" also by James Ivory inspired him for "Phantom Thread" so I'm wondering if he already was influenced by James Ivory work in 1999 or maybe is it by the book by Kazuo Ishiguro.

I just wanted to share some of my thoughts with you, see if someone else has the same or if PTA has spoken about it.

Sorry for my English, it's not my first language.

Have a nice day !
