Daily song discussion #99: Girls School

'Girls School’ was released on a double a-side single with Wings’ ‘Mull Of Kintyre’.

It was written by Paul McCartney in Hawaii in December 1975, under the original title ‘Love School’. McCartney found inspiration from a list of pornographic film titles in an American publication.

"The song came about when we’d finished our tour of Australia and were coming back via Hawaii for a sort of holiday after the tour. We were supposed to go to Japan, but the Japanese Minister of Justice decided we couldn’t get in, because we’d been naughty. So we went to Hawaii instead, on the way back to England. Anyway, I was looking through one of these American newspapers and the back page, at the end of the entertainments section, is always the porno films. I rather liked the titles, so basically I took all the titles and made a song out of them. For example, there was a film called School Mistress, another called Curly Haired, one called Kid Sister and another called The Woman Trainer and I liked those titles so much I just wove them into a song. It’s kind of like a pornographic St Trinians." -Paul McCartney The Paul McCartney Encyclopedia, Bill Harry

"If you’re in a rock and roll group, you’re always trying to write songs that are going to work live. I think this one came from seeing an ad for a porn film called Girl School. It might even have said something like (I’m trying to recall from forty years ago), ‘See Yuki and so-and-so romp to your delight’. So I thought, ‘Right, I’m going to imagine this school into a song.’ I thought, ‘It’s a girls’ school, like St Trinian’s’ – which had been a comic book and a series of films set in an all-girls school when I was growing up. But now it would be a kind of grown-up St Trinian’s. I just started to imagine all the characters and what they were all up to, and it was all a little bit lacy. " -Paul , the lyrics book

Girls School’ was initially recorded in February 1977, but was remade at Abbey Road Studios on 14 March. It was completed in August in Campbeltown, Scotland, using Mickie Most’s RAK Mobile Studio.

"The song is a series of vignettes, all tied together. That’s something I like to do across a lot of my lyrics. If you think about it, the vignette is really my stock-in-trade.

A lot of the guitar bands who came alone in the eighties – the glam metal bands – took this kind of risqué lyric and ran with it. But for us, it was really just a one-off reflection of what was happening at the time." -Paul, the lyrics

While ‘Mull Of Kintyre’ became a smash hit in the UK, in the States ‘Girls School’ received the bulk of the promotion. Despite the efforts, however, it only reached 33 on the Billboard Hot 100.

"The idea of it was that if someone had bought the single and decided they wanted to have a dance, all they had to do was flip it over and there they had something to dance to, rather than put two songs that were the same sort of thing on the record.

The idea of having a double A-side was so that if someone thought we were only into ballads, there was the opposite to prove we do all kinds of songs. I think there may be some people who prefer the more rocking side, which is the ‘Girls School’ one. So, for those people, we made it a double A, because b-sides get swallowed. B-sides never get played on the radio or anything like that, so you have to say it’s a double A even if you really think it’s an A and a B." Paul, "The Paul McCartney Encyclopedia" by Bill Harry

Although it was included on the 1993 reissue of London Town, ‘Girls School’ did not appear on any Wings or McCartney compilation until The 7″ Singles Box in 2002. It was never played live.

What's the most underrated Paul Mccartney album?

To me, is simply Back to the Egg. It has many of his best songs like Getting Closer, Babys Request and one of my top 5: After The Ball/Many Miles. Why don't people talk about this song? Why dont people talk about this album? I don't know, but that's my answer.

Daily Song Discussion #95: Must Do Something About It

Must Do Something About It’ is the ninth song on Wings’ fifth studio album Wings At The Speed Of Sound.

Although written by Paul McCartney, it was sung by the band’s drummer Joe English.

"IT turned out less of a McCartney production and more of a Wings effort. It wasn’t intended like that. There was one of the songs that I had sung but I just let Joe, our drummer, sing it because he’s got a very nice voice, and he sang it great." -Paul, archive edition

"I don’t know who Paul wrote it for, but when you read those words, it was pretty much me that they were talking about. A good part of that was where I was at, what I was thinking about, being in another country … I was away from home; my wife was back in the States and Paul could feel that. I started going back and forth between the US and London, every two weeks I’d go home on the weekend." -Denny Laine, 2014 Wings At The Speed Of Sound deluxe edition liner notes

Wings recorded ‘Must Do Something About It’ at Abbey Road on 5 January 1976. Initially it had McCartney on lead vocals, but English’s enthusiasm for the song prompted Wings’ leader to give way.

The song was completed with further overdubs on 19 February, including a harmonium part and English’s lead vocals.

‘Must Do Something About It’ was never performed live by McCartney or Wings.

Daily Song Discussion #94: Time To Hide

It was the first Wings song written solely by Denny Laine. ‘Time To Hide’ originally had the working title ‘If I Have To Run’.

"It was my song. And the fact that Paul wanted to record it was a compliment. His contribution was helping with the arrangement, mine was more the arrangement of verses, choruses. Then we’d go to the half-tempo thing in the middle, and that was to show off the harmonies. Wings was a great harmony band." -Denny Laine, 2014 Wings At The Speed Of Sound deluxe edition liner notes

'Time To Hide’ was recorded at Abbey Road. The basic track was laid down on 5 January 1976, and it was completed with further overdubs on 19 February.

Paul McCartney played an electric guitar using a Gizmotron – a device invented by 10cc’s Kevin Godley and Lol Creme, which attached to a guitar and bowed the strings to simulate the sound of orchestral string instruments. He had previously used it on ‘Spirits Of Ancient Egypt’.

"Half of the thing was harmonica – it was a little chance because I used to play a lot of harmonica with The Moody Blues – and the other half was Paul playing guitar with Gizmo, which gave it a really different sound."- Denny Laine, 2014 Wings At The Speed Of Sound deluxe edition liner notes

Wings performed ‘Time To Hide’ during their Wings Over The World Tour in 1976.

A recording from New York’s Madison Square Garden on 25 May 1976 appears on the live album Wings Over America.

First McCartney album?

What was your first McCartney solo album? (Wings included)

I had recently gotten into the Beatles and tore through their entire catalogue. Then "Flowers In Yhe Dirt" came out and I bought it right away. I listened to it over and over and loved every song. I bought the "My Brave Face" single on vinyl and cassette. I bought the World Tour Pack when that came out. I couldn't get enough of that album.

When the world tour came around, a local radio station was offering a package deal...a bus ride across the state to the Seattle show AND a ticket for just over a hundred bucks. I begged my mom to loan me the money, but no luck. (A fact that she now regrets to this day!)

Though I've listened to every McCartney solo album over a hundred times, "Flowers In The Dirt" still holds a special place in my heart and always will.

Why was Winedark Open Sea the song chosen from OTG?

I just listened to Off thr Ground for the first time, and I rather enjoyed it. Not top tier McCartney, but still a really good album.

Out of curiosity, I checked out the track listing for the deluxe edition of Pure McCartney, to see what song was chosen from the record. I was very surprised to see only one sing from the album, and that song was Winedark Open Sea. I don't think its a bad song, it though it was decent. But I thought there was a nunch of songs better than it on the album. And I was also surprised that they didn't go with one of the singles from the album.

So...why did they choose this particular song from Off the Ground?

Requesting Stats on Macca’s Billboard Success

Can someone more knowledgeable than me tell me how much time Macca has spent as number 1 on the global and UK Billboard charts over his entire career? And how many weeks he has been on the Billboard in general, not necessarily in the top spot? And the same stats for the second-ranked artist?

Thanks, everyone!

Daily Song Discussion #91: Wino Junko

The music was written by the band’s guitarist Jimmy McCulloch, with lyrics by Stone The Crows drummer Colin Allen.

"At around the time I wrote the lyric I was doing some rehearsing with Jack Bruce. Also involved was STC keyboard player Ronnie Leahy. ‘Wino Junko’ was really born out of the fact that Jack – a well-documented heroin user – was also into fine wines, which at the time I thought was a bit of a contradiction. The rest of the lyric is just stringing some words and ideas together. ‘Doctor Tom’ does actually relate to a real doctor. His name wasn’t Tom, I used that ’cos it rhymed with on. He was in actual fact a private doctor used by many musicians and people in showbiz. He would, often without regard for a patient’s well-being, give prescriptions out for whatever pills a person wanted – uppers, downers. So ‘Doctor Tom is getting on/All he does is sign his name’ meant he was getting rich just by signing prescriptions." -Colin Allen Little Wing: The Jimmy McCulloch Story, Paul Salley

"This song, and ‘Medicine Jar’, is about someone who knows he can’t resist to extremes. And this was very much Jimmy. It was the story of his life. You sort of want to be able to go back in time and say, ‘Look Jim, these are warnings to yourself, you’re writing them and singing them. What’s the logic here? You straighten up." -Paul McCartney, 2014 Wings At The Speed Of Sound deluxe edition liner notes

The song was recorded at Abbey Road on 13 January 1976.

Daily Song Discussion #90: Beware My Love

Wings initially recorded the song on 28 August 1975 at Olympic Sound Studios in London. Led Zeppelin’s John Bonham guested on drums in the absence of Joe English.

"John was a good friend of mine, and I was a great admirer of his. I would always say that my top three drummers were Ringo, Keith Moon and Bonham. I really liked the power of John. I hooked up with him that one time and said, ‘Fancy recording something? I’ve got this song.’ We just went into the studio and decided to play together I got on the piano, and he thrashed his drums." -Wings At The Speed Of Sound deluxe edition liner notes

Wings re-recorded the song with their full line-up in seven takes at Abbey Road on 17 October 1975. The basic track had Paul McCartney on vocals and piano, Linda McCartney on Moog synthesizer, Denny Laine on bass guitar, Jimmy McCulloch on electric guitar, and English on drums.

They re-recorded the song yet again on 27 January 1976. Wings taped 53 takes, around half of which were complete. The final version was an edit of the October and January versions, with the later version used for the song’s finale. The vocals were recorded during overdub sessions on 22 and 23 January.

Let ’Em In’ was the second single issued from Wings At The Speed Of Sound. It was released in June in the US, and the following month in the UK, with ‘Beware My Love’ on the b-side.

The single reached number two in the UK, and three on the US Billboard Hot 100. It topped the Billboard Adult Contemporary Chart. It also topped the Canadian RPM Adult Contemporary chart, and reached number three on the Top Singles chart

'Let ‘Em In’, with its German artwork and ‘Beware My Love’ on the b-side, was included on the 2022 box set The 7″ Singles Box.

Live performances

Wings performed ‘Beware My Love’ during their Wings Over The World Tour in 1976.

A recording from the McNichols Sports Arena in Denver on 7 June 1976 appears on the live album Wings Over America.
