ATM fees / exchange rates

Could you tell me which banks/ATMs have the lowest fees and best exchange rates for getting money with a foreign credit card?

Or would you recommend to bring cash and change it directly in PNG - if yes, where?

Thanks!!

Trip to PNG

Hi All!! Me again, hoping to get some more info for our upcoming trip to PNG...

As most of you recommended NOT to go to the Highlands, we decided to stick to

Tufi / Milne Bay / West New Britain

Volcanos...rainforest.....beach....diving....snorkeling......culture....markets.... these are some things that interest us!!!

I wanted to ask if maybe you have already been to one of these places and could recommend your favorite activities there? Also if you have a recommendation for a hotel/guest house (no need for All-Inclusive super fancy resorts, as long as it's clean and people are nice!!!) And of course, guides!

ANY recommendations are highly appreciated!!! Thanks a ton in advance :)

Is this driving advice from wikivoyage accurate?

The traffic can sometimes become heavily disorganised, and in addition, there may be many juveniles without driver's licenses driving motorcycles on the roads. Should an accident, major or minor, occur, be aware that often, the non-local would be blamed for the accident unless police intervene, regardless of whether the accident was really his/her fault. Always wear a helmet when on a motorcycle.

Lonely planet had odd, incorrect advice when it was around.

Do I really have to worry about getting in a traffic accident with an unlicensed child and being blamed for the accident, no matter how innocent I am?

Transit from Tufi to Alotau

Hi All!

We are planning a trip to PNG and are looking at options to travel from Tufi to Alotau. Is it true that all the flights have a layover in Port Moresby or are their also direct flights - where can we find them if there are any? Or is there another option for traveling from Tufi to Alotau besides plane?

Thanks in advance!!

Moving to PNG (port moresby) for a 3 year contract

Good afternoon everyone! I was having a lot of trouble looking for information online about PNG (Port Moresby), although this seems like the right group to get correct information.
I will be moving in January for potentially a 3 year contract for work, I have accom and a vehicle sorted through my employer. I just wanted to know roughly what my rough monthly living expenses would cost me.
My employer mentioned that part of the contract is I get memberships to a couple of different clubs (i think the Avain club and a golf club or yacht club, I cant quite remember). I like to get out and explore and i usually have a few beers everynight,
1)what can i expect to pay for a local beer on tap at a bar etc?
2)Also what would i usually expect to pay for a weekly basic shop for meal prepping eg. chicken, rice and vege's.
I am an Australian although I have been out of the country a couple of years now (living in cambodia)
All I have been reading is that its so drastically expensive for everything, can someone give me a few comparisons of what things cost in australia as apposed to port moresby.
I have also read that it is a very dangerous place for women? how dangerous are we talking? Can my partner safely walk to the local market / shop by herself?
Thanks for your time.

Trip to PNG

Hi All!

I am new on reddit and found it super helpful for researching for my upcoming trip to PNG that my boyfriend and I are planning. I thought I would give it a shot and just write a post, hoping to get some recommendations for our upcoming trip!

Where to start...we first found out about the Kokoda Track but saw it was pretty long, so looked for an alternative - Bulldog Track. However, we were advised not to go but rather choose somewhere else due to safety reasons. (General question: Is this true for the highlands in general, not to go there at the moment?) Now we are planning on spending some time in New Britain - we would love to go diving and hiking. As for hiking, we thought about rainforests/volcano for example....? Any recommendations where we should go/where we should look for guides??

What we also thought looked interesting was Tufi and Milne Bay. Have you been? What do you think??

If you have annnny more recommendations... suggestions on "Must sees/Dos"... Places we should avoid... good sites to look for guides/accomodations/hikes/dives.... ANYTHING is very much appreciated!!!

Thanks so much!!

Study in PNG

Hi so I'm trying to find out how to possible it would be to study in PNG as a foreginer.

I'm a Kiwi, from New Zealand, and I'll like to move to PNG to study a post-graduate diploma. Preferably in education or science.

I'd love to get some insight into how I would go about finding and getting in touch with a university or teachers collage. I've seen some prices listed online, are they only the prices for locals or would it be the same cost for foreginers?

As well as that I also don't really understand how the visa process would look. What kind of time and info would be needed?

If anyone know much about how it works/ how possible it would be to do, that would be great. So far I haven't had much luck researching online. Is it something I would need to be in PNG first to try do?

Thanks

Local non-sovereign monarchies

Hello friends, in PNG, to what extent do local non-sovereign monarchies still play ceremonial roles in their communities (or even hold some actual power enshrined in law)? I know that some African countries have many such small local monarchies that are officially recognized by the national government, so just wondering what the situation is like in PNG. Thank you!
