Police budgets are the biggest line item on any municipalities budget. It would logically follow that it would also be the most scrutinized. As it turns out it is virtually impossible to openly criticize and debate the use of tax dollars when it comes to policing in Ontario.
This is something our guest today resigned their position on Peel’s Police Board for. Newly elected Mississauga Mayor Carolyn Parrish resigned from the Peel Police Board over a proposed 23.3% budget increase which would lead to increased property taxes for Mississaugans. Something as Mayor, she was concerned with but not allowed to discuss openly due to the code of conduct for Police Board members not being able to openly criticize decisions.
We discussed a similar issue with Hamilton Councillor Cameron Kroetsch when he was disciplined by the Hamilton Police Board over his objections to their proposed budget increase. If duly elected municipal officials cannot publicly debate the spending of public tax dollars what does that mean for oversight or accountability?
These are some of the questions we put forward to Mayor Parrish as she joins us today on the podcast.
Hey there,
Curious if anyone here has worked for MDA Space..any feedback or opinions are welcome.
Hi,
Long story short, cancelled from CAA through Billyard Insurance Group due to their auto system taking the payment out off schedule 3 times over the past year, when my money was in other accounts for budgeting reasons. My first ever cancelation and I'm hit with about a $1000 per year increase.
My question is, are there any insurance providers in the province that give leniency for up front payment? I tried Belair Direct and they absolutely will not.
Looking to see what my options are.
Thanks!
I am booked for Blue Mountain Village from December 18th-December 20th. Flixbus says there are no trips on the Wednesday, the 18th. Are there any other ways I can get there outside of a car? Thanks
I've always had my health benefits (prescriptions etc) covered by employers, but want to start researching private options in case I lose my job. I have multiple pre-existing conditions and am on several medications.
What are some of the better options in Ontario? What sort of monthly costs should I expect? What should I look out for when comparing companies?
You are all on the frontlines, navigating our broken system every day. You know the problems better than anyone else, and I would be willing to bet you've got real practical solutions that could actually help to fix healthcare in this province. I'm sick of hearing Politicians give it lip service.
Hi all!
Those of you that got married this year how long did it take for Service Ontario to register your marriage? I got married 09/28/24 and my offiant said they sent the paper work off right away. I applied for the certificate 6 weeks later and its still saying "Awaiting event registration" I know with Canada post on strike even when event is registered I most likely won't receive it for a while (which is unfortunate because i need it to assume my husbands last name) It's making me nervous it's still not registered lol
How much will it cost to renew? It's 35.00 for a Photo card, but it only says that it may be different if both expired. It does not give another cost though.
I just got hosed on Cefixime prescription at Rexall. They had no generics on hand, and did not tell me. Instead they went ahead and filled the prescription with Suprax (the Brand name of Cefixime) at $15/per pill. I was absolutely floored when they rang in the prescription, completely unphased at the insane price on the register.
Was the pharmacy violating it obligations by not providing me with any warning about them not having a no generics on hand? If so, can I report it?
Hello users. Something to bring to attention that the public does not get to see. Peo, professional engineers Ontario, have decided to remove themselves as an oversight under the drainage act.
As I'm not a civil engineer, I can't offer you an opinion on this. However, I can say that going forward it will be under the ministry.
Here is a excerpt on the decision itself.
The Ministry, OSPE’s Land Drainage Committee, the Land Improvement Contractors of Ontario (LICO), Ministry of Transportation and the Drainage Superintendents Association of Ontario (DSAO) were consulted on the discontinuance proposal. The Ministry and OSPE’s LDC both provided endorsement letters. The other organizations did not reply or replied that there is no risk from discontinuation of the PEO guideline, and they fully support PEO’s proposal to discontinue the old guideline. As a result of a subsequent month-long open consultation on the proposal to discontinue the guideline on the PEO website (prompted by an email to 1,299 licence holders, eight indigenous engineering companies for indigenous communities, three drainage organizations and 20 subscribers to the PEO guideline updates) conducted from September 23 to October 23, only two comments were received, both pertaining to the Ministry’s publication 825 rather than the PEO guideline itself.
As the engineers have not weighed on on the decision except for all of 2 comments on stakeholders. I open it to public opinion.
Cheers
Hello everyone! I recently became employed at a job that has started scheduling me weekly for a 1h shift. I gave them full time availability so I am capable of working more than that, and my other four shifts are between 5 and 8 hours. I am wondering if I am entitled to three hours of pay for this shift, especially considering they did not discuss how short it was with me prior to scheduling it….They actually told me I’d be scheduled for 4 days a week, then added the fifth day with a measly 3:00-4:00pm shift without letting me know.
If I’m only getting paid for an hour it’s almost a waste of time for me as my commute to and from would be be just as long as the shift. From what I understood, an employee can’t schedule someone for a short shift without paying them for three hours, even if they worked less than that. Just wondering if I should raise a stink at work, I don’t fully understand if this situation qualifies under bill 148.
Thank you!!
I am a person with multiple disabilities but I want to work part time because I am able to, want to contribute, and also because otherwise I cannot afford food for the whole month because even with only $650 in rent it's challenging because I need transportation, medical bills, etc....
However, when I went to an employment agency in Scarborough, Ontario, the worker was super rude and intimidating....she told me off for receiving services in the past and said they don't help people with disabilities to find work....
As far as I am concerned, this is unacceptable...
A lot of these employment agencies are funded with tax-payers' money and it's a waste of money to pay for many of these employment services that don't help those who need it most and have multiple barriers to employment!
Since then, I managed to find some on-call work in my field, but not everyone is so privileged and not everyone can have the ability and education to find work like that on their own.
This is unacceptable....these services need to be reformed!
And now Doug Ford brings in a middle-man into this whole mess to create more red tape and to throw vulnerable people under the bus.
Doug Ford told us to get jobs? Well, guess what? We've been trying really hard, with little to no support!
I would appreciate any input on this post and feel free to disagree because it is a free country and it's the internet, but please try to avoid personally attacking me for voicing my views and talking about my experiences.
Thank you in advance for any input!
For those who added more attic insulation done, did it make a difference in the winter months? Funds are a little tight so depating between this and foam injection in areas of the house where there might be a draft.
I'm not very good at doing manual things but I am willing to learn. The problem is I don't know how much maintenance these water tanks require.
I've had this water tank rental since 2009 and so far, there's been no problems. But in the event that the hot water breaks down or collects too much sediment, would it makes sense to continue renting so that we can call for service maintenance? Or is it better to pay for it outright and learn how to maintain the tank? I don't wanna f*** it up if I do try to maintain it.
For reference, I am paying about $30/mo in rent and if I do buy, I estimate that I could break even within 5-6 years.
Good day to All!
My mom (58yo) got laid off few months ago and currently enrolled under EI. She’s having a hard time looking for a job here in Ontario at the moment.
I have a brother who lives in Alberta and she’s thinking of going there for now, for personal reasons, and also a possibility of staying there if she finds a job.
Does she need to update her EI that she’ll be staying in another province for a while?
Would there be any effect / issues if she does this since it will be a different province?
Any input and additional info would be much appreciated! Thank you!
