The focus here is on up-tempo music from the earlier days of hard rock and heavy metal rather than on any particular genre.
Preference goes to music from before 1994 (i.e. end of grunge)
In most cases, the bands will already been known as 'speed metal' or 'thrash metal', but the intention is to include any high-tempo track. This even includes up-tempo songs from doom and proto-metal, if you can find them.
Regarding death and black metal, it would be wise to focus on the earliest material from the formative days of the genres. As a rule of thumb, this sub is meant for the less extreme genres of metal. Doom only gets a pass thanks to its non-extreme forebearers, traditional doom and epic doom.
Generally, the best places to find links come from speed metal, thrash metal, new wave of British heavy metal, proto-metal, power metal, and the new wave of traditional heavy metal, as well as certain tracks from glam metal, doom metal, and heavy rock.
The definition of 'speed' is variable by era: what was considered offensively fast music in 1970 would have been considered mid-tempo by 1990. Deep Purple's Highway Star and Buffalo's Sunrise were heavy and very fast for their day, but were snail's paced compared to the likes of Toxik or Exciter.
Straightforward punk isn't allowed, but metallic forms of punk (crossover, 80s metalcore, horror punk, early grunge) are more than welcome.
