There is a ton to bring someone from Japan, but advanced age sort of precludes a lot of more complicated stuff. If you have gifted an older family member a Japanese or even Okinawa gift and they ended up really liking it/finding it useful, what was it?
Hey guys, so I'm currently taking a gap year and studying for the MEXT scholarship, but I'm afraid I might not have any chance to get it... so in case it goes wrong, I wanna know how I could apply to Ryukyu Daigaku
So I saw on their site the admission mentioning their uni-specific exams, but then there was another sort of exams? EJU? Well... I have no idea how to go about that. They're only held in a few other asian countries (I'm european btw) and I don't know how any of this works. Also their sites are not too helpful...
So yeah, I was wondering if any of you have more info

I will be doing an internship at OIST and I want to bring my partner with me. He will be staying for 3 whole months, so we want to find long-stay accommodation at a reasonable price (e.g., Airbnb's are very touristic and the price is beyond our budget). Any advice, recommendations, websites, or anything would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
We are moving here start of next year and I want to know how to pack.
What kind of clothes are best long or short sleeves jeans etc.?
Thanks in advance!
Both okinawa(ryukyu) and korea were annexed by Japan, but after annexation, most koreans oppose the annexation and there are many resistance movement in korea. But for okinawa, why there isn't much resistance against Japan's rule, and there is even a "return to japan" movement after ww2? why is that a difference?
me and my partner are from northern canada and this is very warm weather to us , summer back home peaks at like 20-25c and we swim outside in much much colder water , we would like to relax on a beach and swim but do not want to get in any trouble or break rules . the okinawa tourism website says you can swim in december if you can handle the "cold" but beach signs seems to tell a different story? we wanna stay in "safer" beaches as we arent used to all the dangerous ocean creatures but i also hear they take the nets down in winter? we arrive in 2 days so all my information is just from researching and reading beach reviews but any intel is super appreciated . TIA and sorry if this is a dumb question
Any recommendations on a good chill Jazz bar to hang out at or bar that has live Jazz night??? TIA
I just bought a PlayStation portal and the beta streaming is not working. Before I start the process of exchanging is anyone having issues? I can connect to my PlayStation 5 perfectly fine but once I try the beta I get a message saying “can’t start because your internet connection quality might not not be sufficient to play streaming games”.
where would i find a nike ski mask, i’d assume it would be at a hardware store or something since i’ve seen alot of construction workers wear them. thank you.
Please drink iced coffee from a coffee shop called Genten(原点) in Okinawa City.
It's very delicious. 600 yen per cup.

Has anybody had to deal with losing a sofa license? If so how does one go about getting a new one? Also how screwed would one be if they did?
Just out of curiosity where do y'all get surfboards and surf
Hi everyone!
I’m planning a week-long trip to Naha this December, starting on the 5th. Since I’ll only be bringing a travel backpack, I want to pack light, ideally just one jacket.
I’m a bit unsure what to go with. My options are a light uniqlo puffer jacket, a leather jacket, or a denim jacket. Or maybe I could get away with just a cardigan? Will I need a scarf too?
For context, I live in Fukuoka, and it’s been chilly recently (around 9-15°C). I’ve been wearing my puffer jacket and a scarf most days.
Sorry if this is a bit of a silly or repetitive question. I’ve never been to Okinawa in December and would love to hear your advice!

Edit: Thank you so much to everyone who took the time to reply! I’ll be bringing the leather jacket. I’m not a fan of walking in the rain, so I’m skipping the windbreaker and crossing my fingers for good weather hehe
Anyone know if there’s any Tahitian drumming groups on island? Something that I wanted to get into but I’m having no luck finding any
This will be my first time in Okinawa. I wanted to travel for a reset & restore trip before the start of my busy season. I’ll be in Okinawa for a week or so. My friends said I should scrap it and just got to Osaka or Tokyo. Or I should just rent a car and stay 2 nights max (friend suggestion)and find something else to do. Any tips?
Hi All - I will be in Okinawa in a year. Are folks swimming right now without any wetsuits? From all I've researched seems like late November is kinda the turning point as far as that goes but interested in anyone's specific impressions. We'll be mostly up North at unmanaged beaches and at mibaru in the south (open yr round) and would like to ideally comfortably swim with the kiddos. From US so for reference would consider So Cal and New England end of summer a bit uncomfortable, but okay with new England small lakes that time and find end of May in Fla Gulf coast to be basically bath water. Thanks for any insight!
Out of towner here. I hiked around Cape Maeda the other day and I noticed a handful of green plastic boxes just off of the trails and parking lot. One of the boxes was under a small plywood scaffold that had warning signs for Habu.
Anyone know what those boxes are for?
Just following up on a previous post I made inquiring about finding a gym outside of a military base. Several here suggested 4 Rings Fitness and I just wanted to give them the shout out: I was able to sign up for a pass remotely in advance, access the gym outside staffed hours (24/7 access), and I had everything I needed to keep my training regiment in tact. This gym has everything for your strength training needs, free weights (both bumper and rubberized plates), several power racks, benches, customizable dumbbells, cable tower with multi-function setup, machines for each major body part, bands, TRX, etc. Powerlifting, bodybuilding, CrossFit, general strength & barbell enthusiasts in the area will be taken care of here. Half of the gym is the free weight area and the rest is for martial arts training so it's a complete athletic facility. Wayne was very accommodating during my few days here and I can't recommend this place enough if you're in Okinawa.
Any gym and personal trainer recommendations? What the average price for personal training in Okinawa?
I need to fix up my 2001 Subaru Legacy B4 TT (the turbos don't work anymore). Where on oki or even online for all of Japan can I grab myself some new ones (or used) to repair? I've looked through yellow hat and it seems they don't have any real parts besides basic meaintence needs.
I forgot my laptop at a hotel in American Village, Okinawa, and due to lithium battery regulations, shipping it to my next destination in Seoul has been quite challenging.
Is anyone traveling from Okinawa to Seoul by December 10 who could help by carrying it in their carry-on? I’d be happy to meet you at the airport in Seoul to pick it up and can offer a fee for your assistance. Thank you!
I am staying on a working holiday visa. Intermediate in japanese.
Any recommendation is welcome, open to virtually anything.
Appreciate any suggestions!
After I have booked the vacation, I have had a hard time finding a hotel that allows people with tattoos in the pool area. But what about the beaches? Will I be required to wear a shirt?
