Hi. I'm relatively new to prepping and preparedness. I would call myself a casual prepper. I live in Cincinnati, Milford to be specific, and we recently had some bad winds that did some meaningful damage. There is a little debate over if they were tornados or not. Regardless, it made me want to get a little more active in the community. I recently made a YouTube video on a bug out bag and a disaster supply kit. My husband and I have been homesteading/prepping for about 4 years. We live in Columbus and looking to meet other preppers in OH. I’m having trouble finding current groups tho, it seems most prepper groups in the area don’t meet anymore. Does anyone here do meet ups or anything?

Let's here some threats in ohio if SHTF that would need to be worried about? For instance, Wright Patterson Air Force base in dayton would be a target if a RED DAWN scenario or an ICBM attack happened. And be sure to add why you believe it's a threat. Let's share some info on potential threats.

moving to Akron, need a bug out location. Buying is an option, but it will take a village and mix of skills. 36 yrs old with a wife and two small kids. I can shoot straight, but i'm building my skills toward larger scale gardening with season extension since it seems a lot of people can grow and raise chickens/goats.

My Danner Corvallis still strong after 4 years

One item I often see that is not gone into much helpful detail is footwear. Everything else becomes almost mute point if your shoes fall apart or you can't continue to walk.

I did a lot of research before deciding on what boots to buy. I checked online reviews, forums, and talked to hikers and soldiers alike. I learned about Danners initially from a few S.F. guys and dug deeper from there.

I eventually went with the Danner Corvallis line. Before getting into specs I will just say this: marketing info is nice, but I prefer first-hand knowledge. So, that is what I'm sharing. I've had these boots for almost 5 years now and I still wear them almost every day. The only thing I've had to do is replace the insoles as they wear out from use. I've taken them through almost every environment there is: daily factory floor, trails, woods, river beds, cliffs, snow, concrete and even under water. The treads on the bottom have worn down a little, but not enough to slip on ice even.

Specs (have tested to the max): they are waterproof until water comes in above the ankle (which means it doesn't easily come back out, just dry in sun for day), composite toe and heel (won't freeze or set off metal detectors. Have also dropped metal parts on toes and held up great. Even use toes to lift plywood), the goretex breathes nicely, the leather and stitching have never broken once (triple stitched every seam), and heavy treads are great grippers (even makes you walk quicker until it wears in to your step, true story).

I am not being paid by Danner. Merely sharing positive experience with a product I will actually swear by.

Danner also has free lace and insole replacement and I've heard they're great about exchanging them if they don't fit just right. I've known others who bought similar models from them and have all liked them. The less expensive ones' treads have worn out quicker on one friends' pair, but that's only complaint I've seen first hand.

They may cost a little more than other brands, but I generally feel you get what you pay for (with exceptions, of course). I paid $135 for mine. Usually go around $175.

First off, I'm from up here on the north coast. Thinking about starting a (hopefully) weekly thread called: Prepping in the Land. Yes, I'm a Clevelander. I don't live in the city, but between it and country. I think there's a good niche for people who don't live in a self-sustainable location but aren't necessarily trapped in the maze of high rises, either.

I'm a writer who is finishing up the final edit on a collapse novel, as well as working on shorts and bonus content within that universe. I've been studying preparedness and like skills for years, as well as have more than I'd care to have experience in crazy situations.

Thinking of doing some posts to get people talking about stuff like:
What do you keep in an emergency pack?
Where are good places/ways to get quality gear?
What are good ways to train yourself and hone skills, as well as where around here is good to do so?
I'd also like to get some good conversations going about whatever people feel is important to be prepared for.

Besides the opoid epidemic, what do you guys think the biggest threats are to ohio right now. I'm located in Cincinnati right now as I go to the University of Cincinnati, but my parents and my secondary residence are located about 45 miles north. Just wanted you're guys take on it. I remember the week long power outage back when the remnants of hurricane Ike came through, but that's it. My parents had 50 gallons of gas, a generator, and almost enough food (we were scraping the back of the cabinet haha). Is that the worst it might get bar a nuclear attack or invasion?

Also looking for ideas of what to do if I'm stranded in Cincinnati? Possibly traffic is a gridlock on the highway and I can't get home before something happens? Assuming power and possibly water are out too and A large storm is overheard or the after effects are. Just wanted some ideas, advice, and discussion! Thanks

I know we live in a pretty safe area from natural disasters (Except up here in the 3 snowbelt counties) outside of tornadoes but we are much more than just preparing for disasters, life can throw you a screwball at any time.
