Shoes for walking long distances on the beach during winter

I'm looking for warmth, relatively waterproof, and comfort for miles. Any recommendations would be much appreciated. Cant decide between trail shoes or rain boots. I just don't know.

Where can i find gooseneck barnacles?

I’m going to ocean shores and specifically copalis beach 11/15-11/17 to harvest razor clams due to the -1.7 tide.

I heard there were gooseneck barnacles nearby ocean shores. I was wondering if anyone had tips of on where to find ones.

Also are we allowed to harvest them at oyhut wildlife recreation center?

Buying a home

I love everything about the town and i really want to live there. A quick Zillow search shows a lot of homes for sale. When I say a lot, I mean way more than i usually see in similar size towns. What is going on? What am I missing?

Bennet's Fish Shack

Anyone know if they still server fresh fish and chips this time of year? Love them, but we where there in February and they served "frozen" Cisco Fish and Chips. (same price too.)

Relocation Questions

Hi there!

I am considering relocating to Ocean Shores from the Southeast USA. As a single, early-thirties white woman, I am wondering about a few things.

  1. Safety: Is it safe for me to live there in an apartment or house on my own? What are the natural hazards I should be aware of?
  2. Social: I am a homebody and introvert by nature, but I would love if there were a couple of groups I could join (exercise, reading, hiking, art) throughout the year to help me engage with other people my age.
  3. Accessibility: I have read grocery stores are limited in OS and that driving to Aberdeen or Olympia is necessary for some items. Are there any other accessibility concerns to be aware of in terms of material goods? I also read on another thread here that there is only one road in and out - is that a major concern?

Thank you!

Looking to Visit / Relocate

Hello, I’m looking at potentially moving to the coast from Seattle. I’ll be visiting for a few days over the week of Labor Day to get a feel of the area and what not. My main motivation for leaving Seattle is that I love being by the water and on the beach. Small coastal towns are my jam. That’s where I want to spend the back end of my years. So my questions:

  1. I’m an open water swimmer. Are there any good spots for open water swimming. Any recommendations?

  2. How are people of color treated? I’m black and having lived in the PNW the past 15 years. I’m guessing it’s more or less the same there like up here. But I’d appreciate any other insights.

  3. I’m an old school gamer. Is there any places that have old school arcade games and / or pinball? Or even bowling alleys? Movie theater?

  4. While I love small and quaint towns, I also need access to shopping? How’s the access to big box stores or are there a decent selection of small, local businesses?

Sorry for the novel. But I just want to make the most of my time there since I’ll only be there for a few days. Thanks.

Why are there so many houses on the market?

I’m interested in buying a home in Ocean Shores and it’s amazing how many are listed on Zillow. I see 40 listings for 2 bed 2 bath homes (single family/non manufactured) for < 400k. When you see all the lots available and other options, there are just so many listings for such a small town. It makes me wonder if there is something going on in the area that is driving people to sell.

Any thoughts? I’m guessing it’s something obvious to locals that I’m just not aware of.

Is he always like this?

Local? Guy decided this morning that he’s too important to wait for lines and cut in front of other people in the McDonald’s drive-through. Real class act.

Toxic Algae in Ocean Shores Waterways?

Hello, I visited Ocean Shores last year (June 2023) and was going to kayak in the canals but decided not to after seeing the signs about toxic algae. I will be visiting again at the end of June and was wondering if the toxic algae will be a problem again? When I google "toxic algae ocean shores" nothing comes up for 2024, is there a site I can check for current info on toxic algae conditions?

Do you think Ocean Shores could support an additional small gym?

I’m thinking about opening a small gym with higher end weight and cardio equipment (such as Rogue equipment or similar). No classes or personal training. Is this something that would interest anyone, or are most content with what the community club has to offer? Thanks for any comments.

Gifts delivery in OS?

Mom recently moved to Ocean Shores and though I’ve been making the drive back and fourth between Issaquah and OS a ton lately, I can’t make it over this weekend for Mothers Day. She said Amazon doesn’t deliver directly, is there anything I can have delivered or anything anyone would recommend I send her that could get there? Maybe a Door Dash gift card or something? She just retired a couple months ago.

Visiting Solo Soon

Hi all, I’m an exhausted mom taking a solo day trip for the first time in 7 years. I’m heading out there because I’ve been hearing about it for years. I’ll check tides when it’s closer but I plan to be there in the early morning and stay through like 3-4pm. I’m a rockhound and a beachcomber. Where are some must visit places I should go to when I’m there? Bonus if there’s somewhere I can access a creek or riverbed with rocks and treasures and not just at the beach. Thanks all!

Boring, but homeowners' insurance costs in OS.

My better half and I are discussing retiring to Ocean Shores. The cost of living in CA is too much for us, the heat is more intense each year and our home insurance is too high. All the online estimates require signing up and being inundated with emails from people understandably keen to get our business, but I don't want to give out all my info until we're sure where we will land.

Ergo I am crowdsourcing - for a 1600 - 2000 square foot house, what do you pay?

Thanks

Blue Jellyfish on the Beach

I take my dog to the beach most weekdays at or around low tide, she loves chasing the ball. But today, there were millions of dead little blue jellyfish 🪼 at the high tide line. The smell was horrific. We had to leave because I couldn't stop gagging.

Is this a common occurrence? We've lived in OS for three years, and we've seen these critters before, but not this thick. I feel bad for the spring break crowd, because it was nasty out there.

Research Survey

Hi everyone, I am an AP Research student from Skyview High School (Vancouver, WA). My research is about disaster experiences and communal interactions across Washington State. I am trying to get participants to take my survey from high-exposure areas of WA for extreme heat, floods, and wildfires. Ocean Shores falls into a high-exposure area for floods.

Below the survey is linked, if you are interested in taking part in this research. Let me know if you have any questions.

The paper will be submitted to the College Board and will not be published. Nonetheless, no names will be disclosed in the research paper or even obtained. Additionally, I am certified in Human Research Protection by the Department of Health and Human Services.

If you would like to see the finished research paper later, please contact me at torirehwaldt@gmail.com.
