A Subreddit for locals, tourists, and businesses on the Outer Banks of North Carolina!
Welcome to the Outer Banks subreddit.
This subreddit is dedicated to local news, updates, photos, and more relating to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. We strive to create a community that helps any visitor or resident of the islands communicate with each other. We love to see beautiful photos and videos, and encourage healthy communication between our members to help find local events and goings-on.
If you're a tourist to the islands, welcome! We're currently working on a tourist guide to the islands to help you find your way around. If you have any questions about the islands or you want to share photos from your trip, please do!
If you're a local, we love having your expertise around. Having active locals on the sub helps our visitors find interesting things to do and see around the islands. Also, things can tend to die down during the off season as we all know, so we hope to make this community a place to find local friends during the slow seasons.
If you're a business representative, feel free to post from time to time to let everyone know what's going on! If you're having a sale or event, please do let everyone know about it. All that we ask is that you refrain from posting too frequently and spamming the subreddit with ads. Please try to be courteous and post ads no more than once every few weeks. We also ask that you participate in the community in order to help locals and tourists in the area learn more about the history of the island as well as what's available.
If anyone has any questions or concerns about what content is allowed, or even just wants to talk shoot a message to one of the moderators and we'd be glad to assist you.
This subreddit is moderated by a group of locals from Hatteras Island that hope to bridge the communication gap and make a great environment for everyone to share their wonderful experiences on The Outer Banks.

Just had 2 large helicopters that looked like Blackhawks circle above our beach house and then landed in the field at the Wright Brothers Museum... pretty neat. Anyone know what that is all about?
My girlfriend, dog and I will be travelling down to there on the 7th and plan to be in the area for a week. We have a few days reserved to take the Tacoma to Cap Lookout. Other then that mo plans. Any tips on what we should do and or see?
I saw so many surf fishermen out on the beach this past week, more than I have seen before. I have 2 questions. What were they fishing for? And did anyone get anything worth sharing? I didn't see too many fish brought in but I was only on the beach for a little bit each day walking my dogs.
What is the story of this condo community? The design of the buildings is so cool, but it looks a little… forlorn. Staying in the OBX for a long weekend, drove in to scout out a new place to stay in the future, and got interested in the history of this property.
in corolla but willing to travel for seal watching, or glimpsing. i read that they migrate here in the winter from canada but it still might be too early for them, especially since it's been warmer so im just wondering if its worth it to look for em
Not much published online for this year yet, so I’m looking for suggestions for the week of Dec. 28–Jan. 4. Staying in Kitty Hawk off Eckner. Four adults, no kids. Goal is to relax, eat (and cook, too), and ring in the new year.
Here’s my plan so far: Trivia night (where?) Karaoke (Roger) Phil Watson live show
Touristy things to see with fewer people in the offseason: Aquarium Bodie Island Lighthouse Wright Bros National Memorial
My favorite food stops: Proof Bakery Mama Kwan’s Art’s Jolly Roger - Happy Hour OBX Brewing Station
What else?
My family and are trying to do some retro gaming this week during Thanksgiving, but one of my cousins lost their Gameboy, so we're out a full 4 person complement for the game we're trying to play. Anyone have a Gameboy we could buy, or even rent/borrow? DM me!
I hope everyone is doing well tonight. I wanted to ask if anyone had any recommendations for a Mosque and could tell me where the nearest Mosque is to the Outer Banks as I have just moved here. Thank you!
Are there any in door basketball courts open to the public on the outer banks or in any of the surrounding cities? Thank you!
Last season I had a few guests complain about the cleanliness and usability of the grill at my property in duck. One even mentioned a pretty scary flare up from grease build up. Does anyone use a specific grill cleaning service? Do you have your housekeepers just attempt to clean the grill? Looking for any advice, thanks!
Edit: Thanks for the advice. After some research I found obxgrillcleaners.com and have decided to go with them!
Myself, my husband, and two of our friends are heading to Avon the week after Christmas. Google has proved to be unhelpful about what will be open during that time. I’m used to coming down during the summer, but know a lot of things close for winter. Any recommendations of where we should go, or what we should plan to bring from home?
I avoided the Hatteras Saltworks salt for a while because it seemed unnecessarily expensive. But I finally bought a bag, and it really is better than Maldon sea salt. This is gonna sound dumb, but the only way I can describe it is that HS's salt tastes more like salt. It's got more flavor to it. It might be because it's unrefined? Either way, it's fantastic and I wish the people who run it much success.
Hello!
Roadtripping up the coast for the holidays - we're staying in Beaufort for a night, but we're not sure where our next night should be scheduled along Rt 12. I see online that you can drive Route 12 in 5-6 hours, but does that mean you will make it all the way up to Kitty Hawk? Just want to make best time of the daylight and not miss too much by driving in the dark.
Probably will catch the 7:30AM ferry from Cedar Point. Ferry to Hatteras looks like it goes pretty often. If you had the day to drive most of it - where would you stay? Traveling with a dog so any pet friendly recs would be welcome as well!
I have similar quotes from both of these caterers, and have had a great experience so far interacting with both through phone and email. We are not able to do a tasting since we live in NY, and are completely on the fence as far as the best choice. Based on the menu, who would you recommend to caterer my wedding dinner? based on a 5 hour event with bartending and servers
Before ceremony- Charcuterie Board & Drinks
Cocktail hour- Raw bar with oysters and shrimp, 3 passed hors d'oeuvres & Drinks
Dinner- Seafood Boil with crab and shrimp, sausage, potatoes, onions, corn. BBQ chicken, Mac&Cheese, Salad, Coleslaw or other Veggie side, chicken fingers and fries for kids.
Steamers has a hushpuppy station.
Thoughts, recommendations? Thank you so much in advance!
My family will be down Sunday-Sunday. We have two young children. Wondering if there are any special events happening the week of Thanksgiving? Will consider anywhere in OBX Thanks!
hey all, i (19f) have been looking for some girl friends near my age range! it’s a little difficult and i know reddit of all places wouldn’t be ideal to meet people but ya never know. if you’re a women around the area DM me let’s be friends <3 :)
Just curious on what everyone's thoughts are. A couple recent articles I read on it said that construction could start in 2026.
Hello everyone,
I’m a 21 year old male who just moved to the Outer Banks a few weeks ago and I was wondering what the dating scene looks like here and in the surrounding cities. I don’t know a single person and don’t even know where to start or where to look outside of the normal dating apps. Are there any kind of events here or places that singles meet up? I am looking for a serious relationship and marriage as well, not hookups or anything of the sort. Thank you.
Hey just lookin for a list of what might be open in either December or January, thanks!!!
I have Verizon, but with so many of my calls, my friends are not able to hear me or I break up a lot. Is there a service provider that works best or is this reality inevitable in this area?
I am fairly new to the area. I am in the choir but I want to meet more people and find some communities. Advice?
A friend has an E320 with some weird electrical issues. Their local tech said to take it to the dealership. This car is 20+ years old with relatively few miles. Can anyone recommend a tech that is comfortable working on these cars? Doesn't have to be ~too~ local but they don't want to drive to Greenville or VA Beach. Thank you.
Hey all, planning what might be a solo or 2 person camping trip to the OBX. Any recommendations for campgrounds?
I prefer a campground that offers hookups and will allow us to charge our EV. Will primarily be using our telescope and doing some light hiking. If there aren't any that fit the criteria, we might end up just getting a cabin instead...
PS we are foodies, too so good restaurant reccs are welcome if you have any in mind. We will probably stop by one on our way in and one on the way out. Thanks!
My husband's birthday is tomorrow (Friday) and it's tradition to get chicken tenders! So, I'm looking for the best tendies on the obx between Hatteras and Corolla.
Ocracoke is best part of the Outer Banks
Little background - Family of 5 road trip in August, we stayed in Nags Head before and LOVED it. We are returning to OBX in the Summer of 2025 again and I can't decide if we just repeat and stay in Nags Head again, or check out another are like Corolla, Kitty hawk, KDH, or anywhere in OBX. We love the beach and will probably go 2-3 times a during the 5-7 night stay. We also love a good pool and many families probably do. I am just on the fence.
Do we stay in Nags head or explore other towns?
If we stay in Nags head, how much time does it take to get to these other towns to explore?
We are also looking to potentially buy in OBX at some point, so maybe we stay elsewhere just to see where we want to buy?
Any insight to this question that has been asked 50x on the sub would be appreciated. I did search through the sub for recommendations but just thought this was a little unique and worth posting. THANK YOU!
