Northern Wisconsin family history & ancestry

Hello everyone!

I’m a genealogist & I am trained in discovering local Wisconsin family lineages and stories through vital records, census records, and newspapers.

This is the interest form I put together for anyone interested in learning more about their personal Wisconsin family history. I create family trees, ancestral maps, and historical road trip itineraries based on YOUR personal family history! It’s a great way to connect with your heritage and wonderful knowledge pass down to future generations.

LINK TO INTEREST FORM: Family History Interest Form

Here are some things you can discover from my research:

  • Newspaper articles about your ancestors (Crime? Scandal? Who knows!)
  • Custom ancestral mapping showing your approximate ethnic admixture
  • Most common causes of death in your family history
  • United States migration mapping showing how your ancestors migrated throughout the country
  • Your great-great-great grandparents’ names
  • Most popular professions and careers in your family history
  • Photographs of your ancestors you have never seen before (Found in Newspaper archives, I have subscriptions to several newspaper websites)

I have a degree in Anthropology and have spent several years working for a professional genealogy company. I have been working as an individual genealogist for about 6 years. If you have any questions about my research, please fill out an interest form or email: heritagehuntersgenealogy@gmail.com

For those of you with ancestry outside of Wisconsin, please send me a message. I’d be happy to help you or direct you to a better suited genealogist. Thanks!

WI Road trip destinations

I’m driving through Wisconsin the beginning of summer and I want to hear from the locals about which roads/routes are recommended. I fly in to MSP and my final destination is Bayfield, but I’m pretty open and flexible about stops along the way. (Previously worked in Milwaukee, drove up and down 43 many times so I’m primarily interested in the central and western part of the state). So far, I’m leaning towards a stop in Eau Claire, but haven’t planned beyond that. Are there good small towns on highway 53 or 63? (Looking for places with antique shopping or coffee shops/lunch/Breweries along the way). I don’t necessarily need scenic views or exercise opportunities.

If you have other suggestions, I’d love to hear them as well. Thanks!

Anyone have Starlink up there?

Signed up for their public beta and plan on setting it up at my in-laws who are a few miles outside of Cornucopia. Anyone have any experience with it there?

Birch pole buyers

Was wondering if anyone knows of anybody buying birch poles. They are 8 feet long and 1-4 inches in diameter. I’m in northwest Wisconsin but if the price is right I’m willing to travel.

SEEKING OJIBWE to interview for a novel

Aaniin! I am researching my first novel. It showcases characters of a variety of religious and philosophical backgrounds and beliefs. I think it is important that indigenous people be represented. To that end, I would like to include an Ojibwe character.

In order to create a character that accurately and respectfully reflects Ojibwe experiences, daily struggles, and beliefs, I would like to interview as many Ojibwe people as possible.

Interviews take 1 to 2 hours and can be done over the phone, as I live in California. (If you happen to be in California, an in-person interview is possible.) Interviewees would be expected to sign a release form.

I don't have a big budget, but I would like to compensate Ojibwe participants with a $25 gift card.

If you are interested in helping, please respond to this post or send me a PM. If you come across this post months or even a year later, please contact me! I may still need your help!

Miigwech!

Biking the Nicolet State Trail

Has anyone here ridden a bicycle on the Nicolet state trail? There's some conflicting information on if it's suitable for long distance touring bikes outfitted with fatter mountain bike tires. From what I can gather it's used primarily by ATV's in the summer and gets pretty torn up. A reviewer on TrailLink.org claims it isn't suited for bikes at all but DNR says it is. Trying to decide if I should follow a different route. Thanks.

Home rental resource help, please. (X-posted from r/yooper)

My husband and I are moving to the Land O' Lakes/Watersmeet area for work soon, and we need to rent a house. I'm not having much luck on Craigslist, Zillow, or other sites I've used in the past. I've also scoured the Northern Wisconsin and Upper Peninsula Facebook groups, but so far I'm out of luck.

Is there somewhere else I should be checking? Know of anyone wanting tenants? We're hoping for at least two bedrooms and at least one and a half bathrooms, and we're not picky about location so long as it's within a half hour or so of Land O' Lakes. Thanks in advance for any help!

Dear Wisconsin Resident,

The Wisconsin Broadband Office is pleased to announce a survey that allows residents and businesses the opportunity to voice their need for improved internet access or service. The goal of the survey is to help state planners and policy makers better understand the need for improved internet access in our state. The survey will remain open through November 23, 2016. http://psc.wi.gov/broadbandSurvey.htm

Looking for information on plinking in Nicolet national forest...

My brother and I are going on a road trip this weekend, starting in Fox valley, going trhough Rhinelander, and then on to Copper Harbor MI. I was thinking about bringing a gong and temporarily setting it up for some plinking as a break from driving. I was wondering about the applicable rules and regulations in Nicolet Forest regarding that. Any permits or passes we would need?

Also, may as well ask about Kettle Moraine as well seeing as I'm pretty close to there(Fond du Lac).

Renting a bicycle near St. Germain?

Hello Northern Wisconsin, I will be in you in two weeks! I'll be staying near St. Germain, and I want to rent a bike while I'm there. I'm looking for recommendations on...

  1. Where to rent the bike
  2. Available trails nearby (I'm aware of the paved path to Boulder Junction)
  3. What type of bike to rent

If there are off-road or gravel trails within a short riding distance of St. Germain, I'll likely get a mountain bike. If I'm limited to paved paths, I'll likely get a road bike.

Thanks, and any other recommendations (food, drink, hiking, etc...) are welcome!

Auto body repair near Minocqua?

My son ran into a partially fallen tree branch and did some damage to his grandfather's minivan. Any recommendations for auto body shops near Minocqua? It's a Honda Odyssey if that matters. Prob have to replace both passenger doors due to previous damage as well as fix the back side window. Thanks in advance.

Bus service from Port Wing/Iron River?

Hi, I'm looking for a way to get my dad from the Iron River / Port Wing area to visit me in Madison. Jefferson and Greyhound bus lines don't run through there - it looks like Indian Trails goes through Iron River but not every day? Anybody have any ideas?
