I made a Forgetful Detective/Boukyaku tantei series Discord server

I checked to see if there was one, and there wasn't, there wasn't even a subreddit! It's a shame! So I'm gonna fix that

The Aesthetics and Themes in Nisio Isin's Anime Adaptations: How Do They Play with Genius, Failure, and Mystery?

I'm curious about the aesthetics and thematic depth in the anime adaptations of Nisio Isin's works, specifically Zaregoto, Monogatari, Medaka Box, and Katanagatari. These series are known for their dialogue-heavy narratives, where conversations between characters often drive the story. However, I'm wondering about the purpose of the unique visual styles in these adaptations. How do the visuals complement or contrast the philosophical and character-driven nature of the dialogue? Are they simply there to keep the audience engaged, or do they serve a deeper symbolic function?

Another question I have is about the themes Nisio Isin often explores, particularly around genius, failure, and the nature of Japanese mysteries. Monogatari deals with personal struggles and trauma in a supernatural context, while Medaka Box presents characters with absurd levels of talent, grappling with what it means to be a genius or a failure. How do these themes manifest in the different adaptations, and do you think the anime adaptations manage to convey the complexity of these ideas effectively?

Finally, I’m curious about the role of adaptation. In these anime, how much do you think Nisio Isin's original voice comes through? Are the anime faithful to his thematic intentions, or do the directors and screenwriters bring their own perspectives to the forefront? I'd love to hear from anyone who has read the source material and can speak to how the anime handle the transition from text to screen.

While today's JUMP mangaka are struggling to write a single decent finale, NiSiOiSiN wrote three perfect finales for each of the three main characters of Medaka Box.

Is there a reason Nezumi uses a wakazashi

Do you guys think there’s a reason he uses a wakazashi instead of other weapons? A Walazashi is supposed to be a backup weapon. We never really see Nezumi use it so maybe he never planned on using it unless he has no other choice which is why he just ran from snake.

Do you know if NISIOISIN, in all his novels, has repeated plots more than once? I don't mean that, for example, a plot from Monogatari is repeated in another Monogatari novel, I mean that, for example, a plot from... Zaregoto is repeated in Bishounen Meitantei Dan or something like that?

Nisio Isin Interviews or Notes that Talk About Kumagawa

Hi, I am working on an analysis for fun for many Isin characters since all of his characters are really fascinating. This time I am on Kumagawa and would love to know if anyone knows any links where Isin shares notes or has interviews that give more insight into Kumagawa outside of what is already given in the manga and spin-off novels. Thanks so much!

Juuni Taisen vs Juuni Taisen english?

I'm looking as hard as I can but can't find anything? Is there anywhere/way to read this in English? I doubt we will get it animated so I want to read the book.

More than happy to buy it if I have to.

What are the best NISIOISIN novels (in general, telling it all, Monogatari, Zaregoto, Katanagatari, etc, etc...)?

[Spoilers] Zaregoto Decapitation question: Unnamed woman

Just read Decapitation and it was a really good read. So good I binged it.

The downside though is I seem to have forgotten what advice Ii-chan is talking about at the end of the book. I don't remember exactly when this unnamed woman came up and it's droving me nuts. If anyone could help my find it to go back and reread I'd be super grateful!!

I wonder if we got axed or Issin seriously planned to keep it so short... I hope me and the 3 Japanese people reading this will get an answer to this question one day.

A Fun discovery at my library.

Can't believe my library has the 3 volumes of Pretty Boy Detective Club. Time to renew my card and read these over the weekend.

Bishounen Volume 4 Fan Translation

Edit: Don't worry about this translation. It seems to be a translation of poor quality (which explains why the translator deleted their post), so I have removed the link. Oh well!

Hey all!

Thought I'd post this here in case no one was aware.

Apparently someone had translated book 4 of Bishounen, but had deleted the post containing the link sometime afterwards. It doesn't look like they'll continue the translation or reupload the old one.

Not sure as to the quality of the translation either as I haven't read it, but here you go:

Thanks to u/ale_5iu for saving and sharing the file!

Seeking NisiOisiN Works with Genius Characters

I've read the Monogatari series, Medaka Box and Ill Boy meets Ill girl and I'm kind of always fascinated by how NisiOisiN portrays geniuses like Hanekawa Tsubasa from the Monogatari series, Medaka Kurokami from Medaka Box, and the Ill Girl from Ill boy meets Ill girl.

With that said, I find myself eager to discover more of NisiOisiN's works featuring characters of similar intellectual prowess. Do any of you have recommendations for other novels or manga by NisiOisiN that showcase characters with a genius intellect?

I'd love to hear your thoughts and recommendations

Katanagatari, how different are the novel and anime?

So I've read all of Katanagatari as a light novel, and I've been checking a bit of the anime.

From what I've seen, some scenes seem to have been added or altered to make it more visually interesting (Hakuhei Sabi's preview, the ending gauntlet against the Imperial guards, etc.); so I was wondering if there were other elements changed.

Katanagatari-why does Shichika love togame?

I’ve just finished the series and would appreciate some clarification on this subject as reading the end of this series has left me a tad confused on one thing. Is there something Im missing when Shichika tells Emonzaemon the reason he loved Togame was because she was selfish. I only ask cause I don’t understand the reasoning . Sorry if this something stupid to ask but thank you for anyone that helps.

Any Updates On The Nisio Fan Translations Works?

I hate to annoy but I'm curious about the state of the fan translations specifically Risuka manga, Sekai 4, The rest of Monster Season,240 Gakuen, and the rest of Mazemonogatari (potentially more but only know these works are being worked on).

We enjoy the work you guys do and it's ok if you don't want to rush to finish it, but wish we got updates at least even minor ones I can't be thankful enough for the translations you guys do. 🙇‍♂️
