Only on night shift for a month and my mental health has taken a turn for the worst. After no sleep and severe stress, one good panic attack did me in. I’m impressed with all of you that thrive on night shift, two more weeks and I’m back to normalcy!

I started working nights 8 months back. Initially it was a struggle to stay awake. Gradually I acclimatized. But I feel like my mental and physical health is deteriorating. I don't know if it's in my head or if it's actually true. I can't do anything productive even after sleeping. I feel I am way more productive if I work mornings. So I am planning to email the company about it in advance so that if there's any vacancy for mornings in the future, they can consider me.
Has anyone tried these for work? I’m curious if they are a realistic option for mental fatigue on long shifts.
To the poor souls who work an extra hour this weekend, I will suffer with you!
Just after 4am my supervisor woke me up. I had fallen asleep. I’m so embarrassed and mortified. This only had happened one other time. The last time I had passed out from my sugar being too high(I’m diabetic).
My supervisor was more concerned that I might not be ok than that I fell asleep. I told her I was embarrassed. She said not to be I’m not the only one it’s happened to. And she asked if my sugars were ok. I felt touched that she was more concerned for my health. But I was still embarrassed.
For a little background I've been on nights for about 6 months. We're getting into late fall and early winter here in the North so I'm down to about maybe an hour a day in the sun. That made me wonder about my vitamin levels and whatnot, so I was curious -- if anyone here has had their bloodwork done after working nights for awhile, how'd it turn out? Were you deficient in anything? I'd like to get mine checked out for the hell of it but I have no idea how I'd set that up or explain that since I just moved out on my own for the first time.
I better get to bed, I need to get up early so I can hand out candy to the Trick or Treaters.

Hey guys I'm a truck driver and I'm gonna be paid very good money to do linehaul (which is moving freight from state to state terminal to terminal). I will be home every morning.
I've always had a 5am start at my old trucking job and now I have to transition to nights, I'll be home late Friday afternoon and report to work Monday at 7:30 at night, I have two kids 2 and 7 the 7 year old has been sobbing because he doesn't want to never see me and I'm gonna be working very long hours most of the time (probably 14 a night). No weekends
Does anyone have any advice about this? How to start, transition, my kids, I'd love to hear it and would appreciate it.
I've started working night shifts recently and usually at the end of every shift so far I'm always feeling nauseous. It's kinda like I'm hungover without drinking? And now I'm also sat here with a tiny cold, I'm not too concerned just thrown off cause everything seems strange rn
I know that everyone says to maintain a steady schedule, but I don't know how people do it.
It seems like every social thing, every time I want to go for a night out, go to a concert, etc I have to wake up early. Granted I live in the exburbs but it still is a pain to wake up 2 hours earlier to go to an 8pm concert.
And whenever I get to travel I have to shift my schedule fully and figure out how to do that, on what days I have to shift and shift back.
I always feel like I'm losing sleep for one reason or another. I stay up for too long because I text friends when they are awake, or I have a doctor's appointment, or need a haircut.
Not to mention it makes studying harder when you are constantly sleep deprived or adjusting.
It's honestly exhausting, but I am trying to power through it, I need the money because I have no fallback plan
I am contemplating moving to NYC, which I think might help with some things because social events will be less time sensitive (city that never sleeps right?) especially if I can get a remote job.
Hello I have been on this shift for two years and I am getting 8 hours of sleep and feeling good. However, it is impossible to have a social life/be motivated to go out.
Looking for people who have experience with this work schedule and have been able to maintain a social life on the weekend sat least.
What is your sleep schedule like?
Hello fellow vampires!
To make a long story short i started a new job as a night audit last year (been doing this for 10+ years) however my new boss expects me to attend staff meetings even during my work week (i work 7/7). The problem however is that i go off at 07.15 am and the meetings always are at 13.00 am which would practically turn me into a zombie instead. Am i just a spoiled millenial or what do you guys think? I have been trying to reason with her but to no awail.
Just curious how much more your nightshift pays than days?
Just curious how many are officially diagnosed. I had to quit after about 1.5 years; didn’t even notice the mental decline until it was very bad
My cat was sick so I had to take her to the vet when I got home from work, then I had to take care of her, and realized another one is sick too. So I was too worried to sleep, and now I feel like a zombie, and have a 8-hour shift ahead, maybe tomorrow I'll have to take them to the vet again, and I'm really drained. I thought of calling in sick, but I did that last week (because I was actually sick). Sometimes this shift sucks!!!!! I don't know how I'm gonna make it tonight. I just want to cry out of tiredness, and I'm really worried about my cats too. Just had some coffee and it hasn't helped. Tonight I really wish I could quit.

My current over night schedule has us working Christmas Eve into Christmas Day 6:30 pm to 5 am. Must work the entire shift to get paid for the holiday pay. I have never worked Christmas In 26 years of working. This will be a first for me if I go through with it. I just perceive Christmas as a day nobody should work. I was brought up that way I guess.
TL/DR: My housemate of two months thinks I’m too loud between the hours of 1am to 6am. I told him nothing is going to change because the noise I make is just “existing” noise.
I (30F) work 11pm - 7am two to three times a week. I just moved into a new house with two housemates (31F) & (33M). If I could afford to live alone at the moment, I would. I live in Canada where housing is unaffordable. On the days that I work my second job, sometimes I’m awake between the hours of 1am to 6am because of my changing sleep schedule.
I do not expect my housemates to walk on eggshells because of my sleep schedule. I sleep with earplugs and noise-cancelling headphones on. I basically live my life full-time in my headphones. I honestly have no complaints about their noise level - Because I can’t hear them through my headphones!
Today my (33M) housemate asked me to be quieter when I am existing between the hours of 1am and 6am. For the record, all I’m doing during these hours would be using the washroom, walking to and from the washroom, getting water, stretching, or working on my laptop. I’m not doing laundry, playing music, cooking, or showering.
I see a lot of posts in this sub about noisy housemates, but how do you deal with housemates who are light sleepers?
I’ve asked (33M) if he sleeps with earplugs or headphones on and he said no - that he can’t sleep with stuff in or on his ears. Well buddy, you clearly can’t sleep without stuff in or on your ears either, so maybe give it a try!
EDIT: Thanks to everyone who recommended a white noise machine! I think that is the solution. Cheers!
Hi everyone. I work night shift (I’m an RN) and the leaf blowers at my apartment complex are out of control. I have lived here for a couple of years, and it’s gotten super bad this year. Does anyone have advice for sleeping through this? I can only get a couple of hours of sleep.
I didn’t see this particular question asked before but forgive me if it has been. I’m a nurse and I rotate (3 months days/3 months nights); I am currently on nights working both the 30th and the 31st. Since the 30th will become the 31st is it better to dress that night or dress up on actual Halloween night? I have a great costume but I work in the NICU and wouldn’t dare wear the same thing two nights in a row.
P.S. we dress up the babies too (if they’re stable and we have parents permission of course). It’s my favorite part of the year at work :-)
Thanks in advance!
I am stating a new night shift position in 4 days in a big ol' production plant. Any tips on living at night would be fantastic.
I have been on nights for over 3 years — Sun-Wed 18:30-05:00 and the first two years I LOVED it. Granted back then I was mainly following my work-sleep schedule even on off days so I wouldn’t ever really get much day time. That started to suck so I’ve been flipping my schedule to getting up early in the mornings on my days off. However, the past couple months I feel like I’m just dead 24/7, restless but exhausted in the day time then come night I’m exhausted times a gazillion. What’s is your opinion on an ideal sleep pattern to follow to help me achieve being more awake? I want to add a little sunshine to my life but how can I without completely exhausting myself ☹️ for reference I also have a 45 min drive to and from work to factor into my work schedule which, quite frankly, sucks.
