Beware of red cross

The red cross is loading up all the water and donations and taking it elsewhere instead of serving the community there. There is fresh water near the cosby fire department from a spring they tapped. It says the road is closed but explain to them you're getting water and they will let you through.

Just checking in

How is everyone on here doing? These times are hard, so I just wanted to touch base. What are you all doing to take care of yourselves?

For example, I just did my first rain gutter diversion to capture some rain water... And now rain is much less certain compared to what we were seeing.

Brooks Family Cemetery Bridgeport/Manning Chapel/Del Rio

Hi folks,

I've recently been doing some research into my family history, and much to my surprise, I've some pretty deep roots in the Newport area. I was born and raised in Seattle, I've never been further east than Colorado, I don't know the area at all. I've found some directions to an old family cemetery and have been trying to make sense of them - following the route on Google Maps is a little confusing.

I was hoping to ask that if anyone who knew the area would mind taking a look at the directions I've received and see if they can make better sense of them. They are as such:

" This cemetery is located in the 7th District of Cocke Co. in the Manning Chapel/Bridgeport area. Take Hwy 25/70 east out of Newport and turn right at Bridgeport and cross the French Broad River. It's located at the site of the Old Elmer Lawhorn Coal Yard and on the leftside of the highway on a hill. Property was at one time owned by Elmer Cashen.

The directions are almost identical to the directions given to the John R Brooks Cemetery, which state: from Newport take Hwy 25/70 east and turn right at Bridgeport and cross the French Broad River. Go about 1/2 mile and turn left at the old Lawhorn's Coal Yard onto Goose Hollow Road. The cemetery is up this hollow on the old Clydus Brooks homeplace. This may be one large cemetery or very near it. Not sure if two separate cemeteries or not. See the burials in this cemetery at:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&CRid=2569274 "

If anybody would care to take a crack at it, or if anyone has other information, I'd be grateful.

Thanks!!

Sheltering Crisis Cocke County TN

It is time to face a harsh reality: the local animals of Cocke County, Tennessee, are in dire need of meaningful attention from equipped care providers. For almost two years now, there hasn't been a proper shelter for animals in need. Despite the efforts of animal control, they're left with no choice but to house animals in what can only be described as a makeshift shed.

These are messages that are coming from members of the animal welfare community in other counties from Knox, Jefferson, Roane, Sevier and further. Animals are painfully warehoused with no opportunity to meaningfully seek placement while in county care as they receive little advertisement as the county pushes its personal responsibility onto nearby rescues who are also underfunded and overcrowded.

It's baffling to think that Cocke County once allocated $350,000 annually to support these animals, yet now, rescues and neighboring shelters are left to fend for themselves without support, and without the county seeking a legitimate long-term solution for animal care. What happened to that funding? Where did it go? The amount was never sufficient, and now it has been so greatly diminished that companion animals in need are left to languish, unenriched and deteriorating in crates and stalls made of inappropriate materials suffering from mental and emotional anguish that has left them chewing the material from the walls.

Smoky Mountain Humane Society is no longer serving as a municipal facility after they did not renew their contract in 2022, and while the City of Newport's shelter does its best within its limits, it barely scratches the surface of the county's needs. The situation is untenable, causing immense suffering for these animals and undue strain on other welfare organizations.

To advocate with impact, support from the public is required to demand change in leadership with regard to the provision of humane care and pressure for extensive budgeting revision at the county level to make a way for the stray, neglected, sick, and injured animals of Cocke County. There is nowhere for them to turn and if this permissiveness continues on the part of county constituents there never will be.

As welfare advocates we are begging members of the public and the local media to ask important questions, investigate the arrangements that are currently made for companion animals in need, and demand change in Cocke County. Attend county commission meetings, reach out to local representatives, and raise your voice for those who cannot. Silence is not an option!

Does Newport have Ubers?

I’m visiting a friend at their new home for the first time in may, they live about 20 minutes from Newport so I was planning to stay there, but I won’t have a car since I’ll be flying there. I’ve heard the town is fairly small so would they have Ubers? My own town is small and doesn’t have any. I could probably rent a car but that would be more expensive in the long run so I’d rather Uber if possible. I don’t have much money saved up and I’m 19 😅

Smoky Mountain Humane Society's 2nd Annual Valentines Day Photo Shoot: Feb 9-10, 11am-4pm

Tucked away in the Covered Bridge Courtyard Shops off of Glades Road in Gatlinburg is a little shop called Craft'n for Critters. They operate in donated space to fund-raise for the Smoky Mountain Humane Society in Newport, TN. They sell consignment items, pet accessories, and make souvenirs in-house. Please support them if you can.

Life in Newport - good and bad

Hello,

I’d like to hear what people have to say about living in Newport? How would you describe your community?

What sorts of problems do you face, and does the city or community do anything meaningful to try and resolve them? Could they?

Lastly: you like living there, and would you encourage other people to move there or not?

Thank you!

Climate Change Questionnaire

Hi, I am conducting a research project for school exploring how long term users of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park understand the way climate change affects the park. The questionnaire should take 5-10 minutes and any participation would be appreciated. If you have any questions email me at azhao891@gmail.com. Thank you.
