Solo Day Out?

If you were to take yourself out for a day on the Peninsula, what would you do? I've got a family member (31 years old) coming in late December and I need ideas for her three days here. I've got to work but want her to have some idea of what she can do during the day. She'll have her own car.

I'm a homebody and gamer when not at work. What are y'all doing for fun otherwise?

Update: thank you for trialing our business

Some of you may have seen our post a couple of months ago where we were looking for people to trial our business, for those who didn't here's a quick rundown. A friend and I thought it would be cool if you could turn any photo you want into a paint by numbers kit. That way you can paint your dog, cat, partner, the whole family or whatever you want without having to be an artist.

We looked up the idea and found that the current stores in the market were ridiculously expensive or only offered kits without a frame or with a DIY frame (who wants to put together their own frame? Don't you just want to open the box and start painting). So we looked around and talked to a bunch of suppliers and eventually we were able to produce custom paint by number kits cheaper then anywhere else and already framed.

We reached out to you here on Reddit asking you to test them out at cost price and we've received some amazing feedback as a result. Thank you if you were one of our OG customers! We want to continue to grow and get more feedback and reviews though so we're re-opening the offer in case you missed it the first time around or you want to order some more kits.

You can use the code "COSTPRICEREDDIT" to get our kits for cost price (our margins are pretty slim right now, we want to be as affordable as possible). You can get up to 4 kits at that price so feel free to buy a few and plan a date night, family activity or just get your Christmas shopping done early. If you've already ordered with that code it has no been reset so you can get the deal again!

We look forward to getting more feedback and hopefully you'll love our kits enough to spread the word to your family and friends!

Math and Physics Tutoring for College, High School, and Middle School Students

Hi! I have an undergraduate degree in Aerospace engineering from Virginia Tech. I have taken all levels of math up to numerical methods (including things like differential equations and multivariable calculus). I also have taken physics 1, 2, statics, and dynamics. I am just looking to make some extra money, and I know final exams are coming up for college students.

I can tutor college students, high school students, and middle school students. My pricing is flexible, I'm thinking about $15 an hour. I could do reduced rates for groups or longer sessions. I can do it in person, or via zoom. just DM if interested

Hilton Village Street Parking

Does anyone live in Hilton Village and have a home that does not have a designated driveway? How is this working for you? I am currently in the process of purchasing a townhome there and just found out my side of the townhouse is street parking only. I love the home but I have a 2.5 year old so this is kind of a disappointment.

Areas with large homeless presence in or around downtown Newport News?

I plan on getting around 10 boxes of pizza (or anything cheaper that comes in large quantity) this year and handing them out to those in need the day before thanksgiving. I know the whole shipyard area has lots of folks who are homeless but what other areas should I ride by and try to hand them out in, thanks.

Hole in the wall restaurants near shipyard?

Any restaurants worth checking out near the Shipyard? Some of them have been around since the 1940s (Earnest Place) so always wanted to go check them out, just didn't know if one was "better" than another or had something unique worth trying. Anyone work at the shipyard and prefer one vs another?

Apartments-NewportNews/Norfolk

I’ve recently finished onboarding at NNS and want to finalize a place to live before my start date in the NewportNews or Norfolk area(although I hear its definitely easier to live on the side of the tunnels you work on but i like the larger city vibe Norfolk has compared to NN). Are there any apartment complexes within the range of say $1500 or less that are known to be in the “good” areas and don’t have a reputation for being managed poorly? Theres an overwhelming amount of options online to sift through with half of them saying they regret signing the lease and so I was wondering if I could get some advice from any current residents in the area.

For People Applying for NNS

I will say this in the simplest terms possible without being labelled any unnecessary names: I do not recommend working there. At all. I say this since there’s a lot of toxicity there and the amount of people who support it is pretty terrifying. I am here to offer a simple perspective as to why I feel the way I feel.

The probation period there is extremely long and it’s four months, while most places only have 30 to 60 day periods. Also, everything has to go through your foreman, which is problematic because if you have issues with your foreman, then you essentially have no escape because HR will not help you at all. If you’re in the union, you better hope that you have a good rep because sadly, the one that represented my trade and shift (X31, 1st) actually worked against people.

The foremen I feel like have too much power and this gives the bad ones a generous amount of time to create paper trails on people they don’t like and use it to justify firing them. If you want to have a meeting with your general foreman (mine was a good guy), then you have to not only arrange it through your foreman, but they also have to be in the room with you. I also had experience with another foreman who witnessed a woman on his team cuss me out and chose to put me on another team instead of addressing her behavior towards me.

It is an extremely negative place and it shows with the general attitude there. Toxicity seems to be embraced in the shipyard and that alone is alarming because hostility has no place in the workplace at all. It seems that if you speak out against it, you get punished for it like I did. It’s not “playing the game”. It’s expecting to be treated with respect and doing the same for everyone else there.

I had made a previous post and sadly, the entire point got missed. The point I was trying to make is that people who are being trained to work in the shipyard deserve better because from my experience, I received little training, was thrown to the wolves essentially, and got blamed for things that I did not do. I received no support at all and was essentially laughed at when I was having mental health issues as a result of the hostility I faced under my foreman and her two favorites.

I was gaslit by her, singled out by her, she allowed a female contractor to ask me inappropriate questions, and two of my coworkers to scream in my face and punished me for walking away from the hostility, as I was instructed by the union. I was even screamed at for going to the bathroom “too many times” when there were heat advisories.

I’m sorry, but screaming at people and threatening bodily violence to others is not “playing the game”. That is workplace hostility and I feel like that Newport News Shipbuilding should take that more seriously instead of firing people who become victims to it. Nobody should have to come to work in fear or be bullied. Nobody should have a foreman harassing them or screaming at them for personal issues. And the most alarming thing is that people there act like that hostility is perfectly acceptable when it’s not.

I’m sad to say this because I liked a lot of the people I worked with and befriended but sadly, I could not say the same about my foreman. I am also sad to say that mental health is not a priority there, which is a safety issue and I thought that NNS was big on safety. However, judging by the welding scandal, I can say it’s not.

I also say this because if you come from the other side of the water, the MMMBT traffic is always a nightmare and it’s almost not worth it. And parking has always been a nightmare and most likely won’t get any better.

Future applicants for NNS and people currently there deserve better.

Curious if anyone knows the story of the Babies R Us

Went into the Best Buy on Jefferson next to the Costco/Fresh Market area the other day and thought to ask here about it cause that place has been shut down since I was a kid and the Toys R Us across the street was still thriving. Anyone know what’s happened with it since it’s shut down? It’s just weird they kept the signs up too

third place?

I saw a question like this in another group and thought it’d be fun to ask here:

What’s your favorite “third place” in Newport News?

For those who aren’t familiar, a “third place” is a spot outside of home and work where you like to hang out, meet up with friends, or just enjoy the atmosphere. It could be a cozy coffee shop, a quiet park, a lively market, or even a community center.

I’d love some recommendations for places in the area to relax, unwind, and maybe meet a few new people. Where do you like to go?
