How difficult is it to obtain a conceal carry license in upstate New York and or purchase a handgun?

I’m considering moving my family to upstate New York to be near relative.

Living in Florida for many years and currently Texas, obtaining a CCW/CHL was incredibly easy, even with having a summary offense on my records (lowest tier Pennsylvania conviction one can have). 4 hour class, easy exam, no references required or a sheriff to provide a character assessment. Purchasing handguns is a breeze, and it allows me to protect my family regardless of where we are.

2 questions and I need realistic expectation:

How hard is it for me to apply, going through the extensive background checks, gather references, in order to pass and obtain a concealed carry permit for a handgun in upstate New York?

Next: If a concealed carry permit is a long process and unobtainable, how difficult is it to just purchase a handgun and store it on my house?

All information is welcome, anecdotal and textbook law. I’m trying to grasp what it’s like being a gun enthusiast is upstate New York. I’d be coming at a disadvantage I know.

Registering Firearms

I apologize in advance if this is a widely covered topic or if I am way behind on the laws.

I grew up in a hunting family and my dad purchased a pump action shotgun as a gift for my brother when he was 16 (He is 25 now). That firearm has never been registered in my brother’s name. Does it need to be?

More generally, I am wondering if more recent firearm purchases are automatically registered at point of sale? Are certain types of firearms required to be registered while others are not?

Lastly, if a semi-auto rifle was purchased before the 2022 legislation requiring a permit, can it still be registered without the owner having a permit?

Thank you for your help.

How are you informed if denied (CCW) after judge interview? (Ulster County)

I had my interview today and the Judge questioned my references not knowing I had ever been arrested? Also spoke heavily about 2 arrests I had for DWI's 20+ years ago (1 conviction). He did say that they were not denialble offenses but made him alarmed. How will I find out if I was excepted or denied? Roughly how soon? I had Judge Schreibman. Nice guy and fair but I'm afraid he is basing his decision on bad decisions I made 20+ years ago. People do grow up and change... Hope I was accepted just wish he was clearer on yes or no etc. Any feedback or info is much appreciated! Thanks...

Gun Safety Class

I’m in Dutchess County and have not applied for a pistol permit yet. Boy do I wish I had done it when I move here. Questions for me are, not everyone I know or would use as a reference would be comfortable filling out forms so that is a barrier and now this class. I need to shell out over 500 bucks to take a class? Is there anyway around that? I am on this sub often and hear all the complaints but this is where I’m living so what to do. Should I even bother? And do I need the class just to have at home? Thanks all. Any advice is welcome.

Ammo check

When you undergo a background check to buy ammo is it the same as when buying a gun? What would disqualify you?

Firearm Certification or just training class for civilians in Hudson Valley?

Hi all,

I am wondering what class are available for firearm trainings in or around NYS. I live in Hudson Valley and just wondering if there is any place that offer quality firearm training not too far away.

I am interested in pistol, rifle, and shotgun classes - not for plinking purpose, to really understand these tools.

I spoke to an instructor from West Hartford, CT and he sounded like a real deal but he is not always around in the area. So I looked into some NRA course and USCCA classes but they are mostly situated outside of NYS and NRA courses seemed rather too basic for the fee the instructors charge. If anyone knows some reputable instructors in the area, would much appreciate the info!

Thank you in advance.

Storage Question

Hey everyone, hope your holidays went well. I’m thinking about getting this safe for my firearms (link Kaer Gun Safeposted below). I just heard that ammunition has to be stored separately, so that means I need 2 safes? I’m just confused on what that means exactly, and I was wondering how you all are storing your firearms and ammunition.

10/22 backpacker stock question

Would this be considered an “assault weapon” as long as it doesn’t have a muzzle device or threads?

https://magpul.com/x-22-backpacker-stock-ruger-10-22-takedown.html?mp_global_color=118

One person told me the stock looks like a pistol grip. Make no sense since it is a stock not a pistol grip.

The storage compartment folds on the stock. Would that folding storage compartment be considered a folding stock? The stock itself doesn’t fold just the door on the compartment.

God bless NYS!

Just moved

Just moved back to NY from a free state (don't shit on me, I moved for family help as mine is growing). With that being said I'm trying to learn all the laws. Can you use an AR-15 w/ a 30 rd mag for training or is that prohibited as well? I haven't seen anything clear on it. I'm in Upstate. Thanks.

Legality around changing a barrel caliber

With the new ridiculous ghost gun laws I am aware the caliber must be stamped on the barrel with the serial number. Would changing the caliber by reaming the chamber make the gun illegal? If so what processes does it need to go through to be illegal. I know that it must be serialized by a “licensed gunsmith” but what would that actually entail?

EDIT: I read the law wrong about the barrel needing a serial but I’m still curious about how the law around serializing a receiver would go. If you had a privately manufactured firearm would you need to obtain a serial number before you created the receiver or would you be able to legally get it serialized after it was complete

By privately manufactured firearm I mean a long gun that is non semi automatic and not to be sold or transferred

Aftermath of New York State Rifle & Pistol Association Inc. v. Bruen ruling?

Hi everyone,

I have seen people in this sub discuss how restrictive gun ownership is in NY because of recent judicial/legal battles, so I thought this was the perfect place to reach out for some sources.

I am a student journalist in New York, completing a story/project on the state of gun control legislation and gun ownership in New York following the ruling of the Supreme Court case "New York State Rifle & Pistol Association Inc. v. Bruen." My project will cover the repercussions of the ruling, the state government's legislative response, and how it has impacted gun owners and gun ownership for New Yorkers.

I was wondering if I could interview a few people or have a discussion in this thread (or direct message) with the few questions I have. This story/project will not be published anywhere, so no need to worry about anonymity.

Moving to NYC in 7 months, what do I do with my guns?

I currently live in South Carolina, which might be the polar opposite of NYC when it comes to 2A infringements. Here's what I have:

  • Glock 43x MOS:
    • Equipped with a light/laser and optic.
    • Runs on 15-round mags right now.
  • 16-inch AR-15 (chambered in .223/5.56):
    • Currently run 30rd mags.
    • Has a Holosun 503r + HM3X magnifier combo, VFG, and a collapsible stock.
  • DM MEPC Plate Carrier:
    • I run two Level 4 plates and two Level 4 side plates.

From my research this is my plan:

- Get NYC permit, bring the Glock, 15rd->10rd mags (when out in pubic), conceal well, make note of "sensitive locations".

- Sell/Leave AR, seems like I'd have to make a bunch of changes for it to be "compliant". For educational purposes if I were to forget to leave the AR-15, how would they know I had it at my apartment?

- Plate Carrier, I'm good to bring my whole setup.

Edit: I'll be getting the permits first, fixed the formatting to show that.
Edit2: I am ambitious with my timeline. Some have recommended I get an out of state storage unit if I am not approved in time.
Edit3: My parents are in SC as well so I can always leave my stuff with them until I have permits and or regulations change. For now the AR will be left behind.

Suffolk Pistol permit Question

On the SCPD website, which I will need to deal with SCPD, it says that "proper cause" needs to be shown in order to get a CCW, on the SCSO site, there's no such requirement. Are the 2 agencies that different or is SCPD just not updating their site for some reason?

Rifle recommendations

Live in NYC. finally in the investigative phase of the rifle and pistol apps. Looking for suggestions as to a good rifle. I’ve shot guns and am familiar but honestly not sure what Rifle to buy. Likely just going to get a Glock when I even eventually get my premises license. Thanks! It’ll primary be a home defense rifle and will take to the range occasionally.
