I applied for the Margaret A. Davidson Fellowship back in December and have not heard anything back. I remember when I applied they said notifications would come out in April and now the website says May/June. Has anyone heard back from them?
What should I expect as a OS For NOAA I have a little experience on tug boats but that’s it I’m sure it’s going to be very different so I just wonder if any current or former OS could let me know what it’s like
On tugs we did 6s and there was only 2 deck hands
Hi - I am trying to understand NOAA's space weather forecast, as I am very worried about solar radiation on my red-eye flight tonight.
Is there a more detailed way to see the likelihood and expected timing of an S2 level of radiation?
I’m seeing lots of articles about the northern lights being lower than usual. About how long will this last? Are there expected to be more events like this in the near future?
Hello,
I am an engineer in the Newport area and I noticed that a NOAA marine operations center is being constructed there. I am working on my Masters in Ocean Engineering and working for NOAA one of the options post grad that I am interested in. Does anyone know what opportunities, if any, there would be at a marine operations center once it is built, either at NOAA or at a support contractor for ocean engineers?
Good afternoon, I am interested in a civilian career on a NOAA ship. I served in the navy, but got out medically and want to continue my time on the sea.
I’m also looking into MSC, but NOAAs mission set is more appealing. I enjoyed the sciences and am also looking to a degree in Oceanography eventually.
I only got out as an E3 which as far as I know gets me only entry positions which doesn’t matter to me.
Would anyone be able to tell me about the experience for someone coming in at entry?
What life is like at sea? Is there opportunity to “attend” college like in the navy enlisted?
What’s the work/life balance? I’m not opposed to long underways, but interested in what the experience is.
I’d like to become a NOAA diver if possible is this only for officers? should I get certified prior to sending an application?
I’ve seen people say that MSC is more guaranteed of a job than NOAA. Is that true?
if I got my degree and wanted to commision, would I need to give my my U.S. Navy service connected disability pay?
Sorry if any of these are dumb questions. My search for Civilian side answers has been dry.
So I'm doing a school project about drugs in youth culture and how drugs can impact teenagers mental health . and how drugs are getting more accepted and more teenagers are starting to use drugs on a more regular basis
so i am hoping some can help me by answering my survey
Hey everyone,
I was interested in hearing the stories from those who crew NOAA vessels. Mostly interested in positions working on deck operations, survey techs or ET’s.
What qualifies you to work as a NOAA professional mariner? Licenses or anything like that?
What’s your background? Degree and work experience before working with NOAA?
How’d you find the job and apply?
Got any good or bad stories of being in the job?
I’m a current college student majoring in Geography and GIS and would be interested in becoming a NOAA professional mariner. Any tips for things to look out for that would help me along the way? Internships, NOAA contacts, or any ways to increase my technical mechanical and electronics knowledge how that helped you?
Thanks in advance and have a good one.
Exactly what the tittle says. I applied to the IN FISH program in February and have not heard anything back yet. Has anyone received acceptance or rejection emails from this program yet?
Title. Just want to be sure I don’t smoke (legally [Colorado]) before my internship if there is a required drug test
Hi everyone! I was just curious what kind of research goes on at the Seattle NOAA offices? I'm a grad student working on computational physics stuff, this summer I have an internship in coastal modeling but I'm also interested in atmospheric models and other fields. I just really want to end up in Seattle to be close to family, but got a sense that the Seattle location is largely chemical oceanography work - is that true? If you work there, what is your research area? Thanks!
Do you guys have any thoughts about exit opps or potential follow on jobs for a survey tech?
Hi everyone! I was wondering who here has gotten the offer to do the Lapenta Internship Program!! Or if anyone has done it before could share any advice? Thanks!!
I was wondering what the average funding for the NOAA hollings program is? I was recently accepted and the website says up to 9.5k per year but I am wondering if it is common to get this amount, or if any current or previous scholars can speak to what they or their peers got.
edit: it is the full amount, 4.75k per semester it is less if you graduate early
Hello, I’m a current freshman and I am interested in the Ernest Hollings scholarship. I do not know if this is the correct subreddit to post this, but I thought that I might as well try. Does anyone have any advice for the scholarship application? Also, is there a way to find out what some of the research areas are? I am an Ecology major interested in wetland/estuaries ecology (for both a career and grad school), and I am having trouble finding if there are any NOAA mentors for the Hollings scholarship that focus in these areas on the website. I have an internship this summer focusing on freshwater streams, but I would really like to have this scholarship/internship next year because my state/college are landlocked and do not have the resources for coastal research.
I just received notification that I was not selected for the NOAA Hollings Scholarship. I am feeling pretty crummy as I thought I had a pretty good chance and this was definitely a once in a lifetime opportunity.
Small(large) sob. 😖
I got separated in july 2023, and ive been trying to find jobs since. I have both a BS in computer science and a BS in mathematics. I stumbled across noaa while hunting for jobs in my area. It looks cool but im very confused if im even eligible given the medical separation (i see you have to go through meps). Honorable discharge, secret clearance.
Any clarification is appreciated!
I don't see it on mainstream media, except for KTLA.
I am trying to understand the difference in technologies used in the two radios - WR120 and WR400 (if there any at all).
Midland USA Customer Support told me that the WR120 is localized and the WR400 is digital. I asked for further clarification, and was told:
"'SAME Localized Reception" emphasizes the geographic filtering aspect of the feature, while "SAME Digital Technology" highlights the digital encoding and transmission methods used to deliver alerts to weather radios."
They also stated:
"When comparing the two models I suggest reflecting on whether you need the extra features such as the preset radio channels and the am/Fm alarm clock."
I am not concerned with the AM/FM features, and not using that as a basis for my decision.
After several back and forth emails with their support I have given up.
Can anyone explain the difference in "SAME Localized Reception" vs "SAME Digital Technology" and the pros/cons to each?
(At the time of writing the WR120 is about $35 on sale and the WR400 is about double at $70-75).

Hi all,
I’m thinking about going to BOTC after my undergrad, going direct to aviation with multi-engine license. I’ve thought awhile about the military, but I want to get some insight on your mission and QoL while I continue to search online.
Thanks in advance!
I'm about to graduate with my M.S. in Environmental Biology (marine systems focused). I have a diverse background with B.S. in ecology/physical sciences, M.S. in conflict studies/social cons. mangement, and years in-between in education/extension/food systems. While I've always had a rough idea of where I'd like to go, I realized when applying for jobs I need more concrete career goals. I'm wondering:
Are there any here that are enrolled in the Autism Care Demonstration to receive ABA for their family members? Checking to see what your experience has been with all the extra assessments just to receive service.
This has to be an error correct? I mean 13 V/km would be pretty insane, let alone 133 V/km. That being said, I live in West Michigan and am sitting here with no power at the moment...
Hello, I am interested in working on a NOAA research vessel but I don't really know the best way to get started. I have a B.S. in Engineering Physics and a M.S. in Physics, but I haven't done any professional scientific work with those degrees. In anticipation of applying I also got my basic certs (TWIC, MMC, BST, VPDSD).
My degree is STEM, which makes NOAA Corps is an option, but it isn’t something directly applicable to NOAA research (hydrology, geology, oceanography, etc). Ideally I would be interested in a position like Survey Tech, and one day I’d like to do scientific diving, but I what would I need to do to start getting experience?
I also need to start making money soon to pay rent and student loans. I’m not opposed to doing more school but need some income first.
Does anyone own one of these? How much are they new? Used? Are they a good unit?
Does anyone know the best places to look for jobs which contract to NOAA?
I am in Washington State and primarily have a marine mammal/fisheries background.
TIA! :)
Greetings everyone! I'm wondering where I could find historical buoy data for the San Diego area. To give you more context, I'm trying to figure out about the swell, the swell direction and all the parameters that would make for good boogie boarding. I know that October 4th and 5th at 4:00 p.m. at a specific location was absolutely perfect for me as a beginner and I'm trying to figure out what it was that caused the conditions to be so great for my skill level. People tell me to look at surf forecast but I don't actually know what I'm looking at or looking for there. I'm a scientist and well versed in analyzing scientific data so don't worry about that part.
I don't know where else to post and I have not been able to find it from a Google search so I apologize in advance if this is not the right place to post. I hope you have a fabulous day! Thank you in advance!
As a recent graduate, is it better to accept a full time permanent position or a pathways internship? Which would be more beneficial in the long run?
