...are you folks using to access and present the data from NOAA?
Well, it is an idea I have been having for a long time, that makes it required for Weather Radios in Homes, At least apartments and offices!
Hey folks, I work at a public library and at the beginning of each month I print the local climate data from NCEI to put at the reference desk. Other than the occasional site outage or data delay, using the old search tool has always worked out for me. When I downloaded this past August's data, the email came with a notice that the tool I use will be discontinued in the spring and they provided a link to the new search tool. It's been several months and I have yet to be able to get current data from the new tool to the point that I feel like I'm missing something obvious, that I'm searching wrong or using the wrong tool completely. I've since figured out that the new tool just doesn't have up to date information. As of today, when I went to try the new tool again, under summary for my local station it says the available date range is 1926-01-01 to 2024-10-25, and yet when I use the old tool, I was able to download data from November no problem. NCEI has the current data but for some reason it isn't accessible using the new search tool? I might end up just emailing them but I've emailed them regarding other issues and never get a response, so figured I'd come here first and see if anyone else has this problem or any insight before I do.
Hi all,
Apologies for the possibly silly question, but I’m a bit confused about the address for NOAA headquarters. On NOAA’s website, the listed mailing address is:
1401 Constitution Avenue NW, Room 5128 Washington, DC 20230
However, when I search on Google Maps, it seems that NOAA’s headquarters is located in the Silver Spring area.
Could someone clarify why there’s a difference? Also, if I plan to visit the headquarters, which location should I go to?
Thanks!
I'm currently a student in army ROTC hoping to be a pilot. I'm a environmental science major and I really want to work for noaa after my career in the military. Do they take ex military alot? And also would being a pilot help?
I guess there was a problem with my app. My initial reaction was "WHOA WAIT WTFFF!?" LOL
Was interested in the aviation path with NOAA, as I have my commercial multi-engine and instrument ratings. But I was curious how much flying NOAA pilots actually do on average? Are there large portions of time in the year where you don’t fly? Depends on mission? What’s average?
I've applied to the Officer Corps and I'm wondering if anyone knows where possible duty stations would be?
I've read about possibilities of going to the South Pole or Hawaii. Anyone know of other possible locations?
I've also read Connecticut and Virginia
I'm scared lol
I just got this radio a couple of days ago and it already broke can i somehow fix this?
Does NOAA actually verify references in application? I’m about to graduate with a bachelors in marine biology but curious to know how thorough they are.
Hi everyone, I’m a junior marine biology student minoring in GIS and earth & environmental science. I really would like to work with/for NOAA, but am not sure where to start. I’m feeling discouraged with the news of the election, and have concerns about job security post undergrad. I’m not sure how to figure out what I want to do as a career and would love some insight on how you folks ended up where you are.
For some added context, I’ll add a short list of some of my interests related to the field.
Thank you in advance for your insight :)
I recently was hired by the USGS. My dream is to work that job to the 4 year term, return to school and eventually get a fisheries job with NOAA.
Given that there is a completely red house, senate, courts and executive branch which promises to slash federal budgets and employment, what should I expect?
My USGS job has not started yet, but i am guaranteed 13 months of work in my 4 year term. Should i expect this minimum time to be the likely timeline for this work given budget cuts? Is the USGS somewhat protected from ideological changes in Washington?
What are the odds that they completely restructure things? If they do get rid of FEMA and NOAA, is it possible to reform these institutions? Would aspects of NOAA be joined with existing administrations?
I am sorry if a question like this is not something you want on your page, I am just genuinely worried about my career trajectory which I was hoping to fulfill with fish research with the feds.
Great seeing everyone and congratulations to the award winners.
Let's hope NOAA is still around this time next year 🙃
Silver Branch still has the best beer cheese pretzel, but unfortunately didn't get to try any October fest brews this time around, so I hope they last another year too.
I'm typically a really good researcher but I have no idea where to start looking to find an answer to my question.
If I drop a leaf in the head of the Arkansas River in Colorado, assuming everything goes perfectly and nothing stops it, given the speed of the Arkansas River and the series of dams along it, how long would it take to reach the Mississippi river?
It’s at some nws offices. Not the radar because the radar is only a couple hundred feet behind it.
This is what’s over Wisconsin.
Good afternoon.
My local NWS Forecast Office is in Spokane WA and every few hours they release an area forecast discussion here:
https://www.weather.gov/wrh/TextProduct?product=afdotx
I've looked around the website and tried to find a way to get that automatically emailed to me, but I can't seem to find a solution. I'm sure I'm not the only person who would find this useful. Have others found a solution to this?
Thank you!
Hi folks,
Civil Engineer who works in bridge design here. In preliminary bridge planning the PDF charts of soundings helped me get a rough sense of best locations of piers, fenders, and other marine related structures. This is all before we go out and get a bathymetric survey, part of early reconnaissance in our design phase.
Since I'm not a mariner, can someone fill me on the software needed to view the electronic charts? Or if there is an archive of the PDF version of the charts?
Thank you :)
I live in the Atlanta metro area where the air today smells of chlorine due to Biolab fire on Sunday. I find it remarkable that local authorities did not request a shelter in place warning be transmitted to Rockdale County residents to shelter in place. Confirmed via the NWS alerts page that no such transmission was initiated. Just recently received a Public Safety Alert on my mobile device informing me that the chemicals are likely un harmful. Why wouldn’t the local authorities transmit that on the radio as well?
As part of my morning routine, I check the Monthly Climate Date page to record the observed low/high and precipitation. At the end of the month, I record the observed low/high and total precipitation for the month. For going on a week, the page for September is blank. All previously recorded September data is gone and there have been no updates. What's the deal? I don't want to use another means of recording the data. I like the format of this page. Here is its current appearance, https://www.weather.gov/lsx/monthTab
Why is the NOAA NCEI Climate at a Glance site https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/monitoring/climate-at-a-glance/global/time-series down so often? Today, it was shutdown for at least 51 consecutive minutes. Prolonged Climate at a Glance shutdowns like this seem to happen anywhere from 10-50 times every month of the year. Are they trying to conceal the facts of climate change from the public? Are they practicing for what they see as the happy possibility of a permanent NOAA shutdown if Trump is elected?
Hello! I am an environmental engineer interested in getting my foot in the door with NOAA. I'm wondering if you could give me some insight as to the role that civil, environmental, and water resources engineers play with NOAA.
I found this mug at a thrift store about 5-6 years ago, and my cat just recently knocked it off the coffee table and broke it... I can't find anything like it online anywhere, it has the NOAA logo on the other side. Unfortunately this is the only picture I have of it. I would love to find another one, have any of you guys ever seen one like this before?
I’m looking for a portable NOAA weather alert radio that’s suitable for backpacking. It should have standby mode capability and not need continuous power— (ideally, a recharge once a week). Does anything like this exist? 😅
I monitor KHC 27 at my home WX base and it has been down all day today for “Technical Difficulties”. Hopefully it comes back soon. Any others who follow/keep up with KHC 27 ?
Hello! I’m working on a science project for my senior year of high school that requires water temperature data from as far back as 1993. I was wondering if it’s possible to find any sort of historical water temperatures from various locations on the East Coast, like Virginia Beach, Ocean City MD and more? Thank you and any help would be greatly appreciated!
What is it like being a radar electrical engineer for NOAA? Is it mostly project engineer type work/testing, or is it more a design type engineering job?
