I am applying to the durham campus for next year. I am a sophmore in highschool and i am taking advanced classes with pretty good grades. However i am worried about my essays. I feel like my extracurriculars are not very involved with STEM as most of them deal with sports. I have however been very involved with radio broadcasting and sports analytics, i just don't know if this really would apply to this. Is my lack of STEM EC's going to hold me bacl on my app, and if so what can i do to make up for it. Thanks!
Can I drive there on my own or do I have to be dropped off by my parents?
Do you publish a research paper with your name on it?
About how much money do you end up needing throughout the experience?
For anyone who’s gone, did you enjoy it?
Is there any point when my parents would need to come besides dropping me off at the start and picking me up a month later?
Hi everyone,
Like many of you, I'm a sophomore planning to apply to NCSSM. I just wanted to say that I believe in all of you! I wish each and every one of you good luck with your applications! Don't stress too much, and I'm sure you'll be fine, no matter if you get into NCSSM or not. Remember that NCSSM is not the only path in your high school years and there are so many other opportunities out there.
Don't submit your applications the day/night before and take time during the holiday break to revise your applications/ essays, ask for feedback, etc, if you haven't submitted your application!
Have faith and confidence in yourself! I believe in you!!
Ok- so i’m applying right now and Im a little confused about the optional statement. Is it recommended that i fill it out? I feel like i’ve been very fortunate throughout my entire life, so i can’t think of one thing to write about. I was born deaf, but the issue got fixed before it really negatively affected me. I’m so lost! Please let me know
Im really nervous admissions because I don’t have the best chances if I’m being honest. I don’t have any AP classes because my school doesn’t offer any anymore and my extracurriculars are close to only three things. The only thing I have going for me are the essays and my grades. Even still my essay is mediocre at best and I am still writing about the about me essay. I feel like I don’t have the best chances but sorry for the rant it might just be nervousness talking
Hello! I hope you are all doing well. I was filling out this section, and I wanted to ask a question. I'm not gonna lie, I spend ALOT of my time playing video games and have found myself to actually be good at them. I played so much Fortnite and got into competitive recently and earned $100. Is it bad to pretty much make most of this section about that?
hello!! i was on here a while ago but i tweaked my essays a LOT and am requiring feedback asap because I'm going out of town in like two weeks where the internet is nonexistent. can anyone perhaps look over my essays and give me tips for the application process? i live in a really competitive county so I'm lowk terrified. thanks!
So I have a question and am very nervous about my future application. For some reason I'm getting scared thinking that my hypothetical app in the year I apply might make me an "overqualified" person due to 2-3x USA(J)MO, USACO Gold, maybe MOP, NSB, MathCounts, 9 AP courses, 4+ leadership roles, etc.
But in reality, sure I was able to take these courses early, but for 11th and 12th grade I'm going to be out of math courses and want to greatly challenge myself with the NCSSM course rigor. Then same for science, I want more opportunities for the STEM due to my school not offering the courses I like and want to challenge myself again. There's also many research opportunities there which will help me achieve my goal of getting my research presented at ISEF and the course rigor could also help me for USABO, UNSCO, and USAPHO. Also, the NCSSM student body will be amazing!, with so many likeminded people with far goals in life collaborating with them can help me discover new paths in life and build my work ethic. Likewise, I feel like my leadership traits and roles and my tutoring startup business align with NCSSM's leadership and innovation aspect. With more clubs at NCSSM like DECA and HOSA, I find that NCSSM will help me find many more likeminded peers as well which will be fun. Lastly, I want enjoy the freedom and experience independence in life early to prepare me for college and play on the basketball team there.
I'm aware that I can put these on my essays, but have heard that NCSSM wants to only accept kids who didn't have much opportunity throughout their high school life, but my awards, ec's kind of contradict that even though in 11th and 12th, I truly won't have much opportunity to grow as a independent person and build character with less course rigor as well. Can someone tell me if these aren't true and if NCSSM admission officers will see my situational perspective throughout my entire high school view. I'm scared that I might not get in due to this.
Also do ao's think about how the potential student could represent the school at Olympiads and science fairs?
Thank you a lot for reading this and hopefully responding!
Hello! I am currently a sophomore applying to NCSSMD, and I have a question. I made a passion project last summer and it is dialoqued on a website. I was wondering if in the extracurricular portion, I'm allowed to post a link to the website?
Thanks!
It’s that time of year! I know it’s been posted so many times but are any current/past students willing to share their essays. I want to get a feel for the format/style.
Also, if anyone is available to give me feedback on my own essays that would be greatly appreciated.
Hello, I hope everyone’s doing well! I was wondering if someone accepted would read over my first essay? It would mean a lot to me if someone who’s been accepted could provide feedback!
What if I already have a Blackbaud account with the same email as my CFNC? Will the system automatically sync my information for the ncssm application process? Do I have to create a new blackbaud account even if it isnt the same email as my CFNC account? Apologies, just confused about the overall process.
So I've been back and forth between two essay ideas for the first prompt (STEM topic) and I've made a pros and cons list for each. Can somebody tell me which one is more of what the admissions board is looking for or what you would rather read about. I'm probably going to end up writing both of them and choosing the best.
ESSAY #1: Chemistry
Pros:
One of the major sciences; probably what the admissions board is looking for
Has a good story behind it and can write about people who helped me
Ties into my Why NCSSM essay when I talk about their chemistry labs
Cons:
Way too broad
Not very unique; many people are probably going to write about it
.
.
ESSAY #2: Exercise Physiology/Sports Medicine
Pros:
Has a good story behind it that has to do with me and my sport
Pretty unique; I doubt many people will be talking about this
Ties slightly into my Why NCSSM essay when I talk about the sports programs there are
Ties heavily into my EC list
Way more passionate about this one
Cons:
Not really a true STEM topic. I'm a little scared this isn't what they're looking for
Might ruin the flow between my essays because my why NCSSM essay is mainly about the labs
Hello! I was just wondering if I could read the essay of someone who got accepted? I fully understand that the essay is mean to be your own, and about you, and no one can tell you what to put. However, I'm just curious as to what they deemed acceptable. Thanks :D
Hey! Just some questions:
What is the first question actually asking for? Is it a love letter to a subject or just your achievements in said subject? I think it's the former. Also, how formal should we make this? Proper grammar obviously, but are we to do first person conversational style or formal button-up fancy style? Bigger words better as well as pretty writing? Am I cooked for starting too late?
Thank you so much for the help!
Ok for context. I grew up in england. I was born here and have been moved back for three years but i grew up there and so I use british spelling. I am writing about my overseas experience in my application but should i spell check for american english or british. I think it would add character but im not sure. Also if anyone wants to read my essays please dm me.

do I have a chance?
I've heard that the North Carolina School of Science and Math selects a specific number of students from each district. I was curious if getting selected from Hoke County is competitive. Additionally, does the math test we take influence our chances of admission? If I perform exceptionally well on the test, will it improve my likelihood of being accepted, or is it solely for determining math placement once enrolled?
Okay so I'm applying to North Carolina School Science and Math this year and wondering am I cooked I have a 3.5 GPA I participate in a lot of Clubs like SGA Creative Writing ( I'm the president) and I volunteer at my church( I have over 42 hours of community service) I play football and I was the captain of my wrestling team through 7th and 8th grade But the thing is I don't have any real big stem achievements I haven't been in any science fairs or part of any Science Olympiad or HOSA team I'm wondering if I will still be a good candidate for North Carolina school science and math please someone help and give me advice

hey guys!!
i'm applying to ncssmo but i have lowk mid stats and i'm wondering if my essays can carry me, can someone pls review them?
heyy! i heard that there are more sophomores than juniors in summer ventures, is this true? just curious thanks !
I’m especially interested in paleontology and biology. But I also want to mention how I could travel overseas for J term.
Hello,
What are some competitions I can do for NCSSM? Currently I am doing ISEF and am considering USACO. Also I am interested in Biology, Math, and CS.
Thank you
Basically the title, would any Alum or current students be able to review the current essays I have and offer criticism? If so, please message me and I can share the Google Docs link!!!
I am a middle school student participating in VEX robotics from 6th grade and need expert advice as I am currently building my robot independently.
I’m in the 8th grade and am currently taking Math 2 and Spanish 1, and finished Math 1 last year. I plan to take math 3 honors and honors precalc freshman year, then AP calc BC sophomore year, with a history AP, Computer science AP, and most likely an english AP. I’ve also completed an SAT and got a 1500, 790 math 710 R&W. I’m also in a ton of ECs, and plan on joining more next year. How much more would I need to do to help my chances of getting into NCSSM, because rn my instate college goals are chapel hill or Duke. Also, this prob won’t help, but in the 4th and 5 grade, I placed 12th and 8th nationally in an annual math competition out of ~4 million people. Would that help at all?😭
So I’m in 8th grade and in math 2 honors, so I should be done with at least pre-calc by the time I am in 11th, and I’ve been wondering, with NCSSM being such a prestigious school, is that accelerated enough to be on par with the average? I just want to know if I’m on track to have a chance at getting in. Thank you!
I have been trying to find what specific Mentorship/Research opportunities SSM offers but I can only find vague information. All I know is that you can chose topics ranging from pretty much anything. Is there a specific program with research offered like researching cells or something like that?
so i'm writing my essays and i wanted to mention a simple game i developed but its not my best work. is there a chance they'll ask me for more information regarding the game if i potentially got selected to join? has anyone else been asked for proof or such on something theyve mentioned on their essays? tyia!
