i looked in both the durham and morganton course catalog and found these classes. i don't know how accurate it is, but if anyone has taken these classes, can you tell me what it's like? i've been getting back into music recently since it's one of the few things i'm kinda good at and if i got in, i'd like to continue it here. but compared to the descriptions of orchestra or wind ensemble, it seems more learning-based instead of playing it with lots of other people, which isn't bad, i'm just curious. if anyone knows if the course catalog is accurate, and has taken these classes and knows what they're like, please let me know.
I know that ssm has a good like arts program, which includes a music department/orchestra. I was wondering, do you have to already be super good and know everything, or will they like teach you an instrument if you want? Because I’ve always sort of wanted to play a string(cello or violin), and be part of an orchestra, but I’ve never gotten the opportunity to. If they teach you and let you, that would be really cool for me. Thank You!
ive visited the campus multiple times for summer acc, but i did register for the Morganton open house. unfortunately im not totally sure if i can make it---does going there help my application in any way shape or form?
I'm interested in applying for NCSSM but I have a question. How is the swim team there? Where do they practice?
I just found out about NCSSM last week and I was wondering if there was any way to salvage my current situation. For context I'm a Sophomore rn and I'm currently not on any school-affiliated sports teams, Most of the "extra-curriculars" I can think of are from middle school (as well as awards), and almost all the clubs at my school are full/not taking more applicants and I'm sitting on a 4.0... After taking a scroll through this reddit I've come to the conclusion unless I can write the best essay in human history that there ever HAS been or WILL be, I might as well start taking orders from the local McDonalds. If anyone could help me out with this dilemma I would be eternally grateful. (also any tips on the application process or what the schools may want to see please leave below)
hi, i'm thinking about applying to ncssm this year for residential but i'm really confused. does anyone know how and where to apply and submit essays? also, about the essays, do they require a specific format? and a minimum and/or limit of words or paragraphs? and does anyone know the data for cd7? i can't find anything on the website, and the counselors at my school are very busy right now so i haven't been able to ask them many questions about it even though i have a lot. kinda rushed sorry but any help is very appreciated.
hii! do any former admitted students have any tips on how to set up my application the best for summer ventures? thank you so much !
Hi! To anyone who applied to Summer Ventures and Residential, and got into both. On the decision day, do they ask you which one you want to go to on the website? Or is it already ranked by preference?
How should we format our extracurriculars as I know it’s only 2000 characters. Would I just list my ec, or would I explain briefly what I did as well. I’m not sure so pls help.
Thanks
I know what when applying to NCSSM, you have different programs you can choose from.
- For those who got into Morganton what was your first, second, third choice?
- For those who got into Durham what was your first, second, and third choice?
- For those who got into Online what was your first, second, and third choice?
- For those who got into Summer Ventures, is it a separate application or is it a 4th choice?
- Which Program has the highest acceptance rate and which one has the lower acceptance rate? (If anyone knows)
- Please mention which CD you are in and your stats so I can have a better idea. Thank you!
Good luck to everyone applying!!
I'm looking into applying to NCSSM this year, and I was wondering if anyone had suggestions. My grades weren't above average or anything in my freshman year, I had all honors but they were mostly normal. This year it's been a better with a 3.75 GPA last quarter, and currently it's at 4.0. My core classes are doing good this semester but I feel like I'm not looking into enough extra curriculars or other activities, and do things like community service hours matter a lot in applications? I'm not particularly talented when it comes to being ahead of students, aside from honors, I'm taking the classes for my grade, so I was wondering if anyone had suggestions or tips.
I know it should be the right length to get across my message without filler, but I just want a gauge for when I start writing. I know most college essays end up being 1-3 pages in double space once typed, is that typical? I don’t see myself getting too close to the 2000 word limit.
If I submitted my app already, after Jan 5 when they send out black baud info, can I change my residential pref in blackbaud? It says "Switch program preference if applying for both NCSSM Residential and NCSSM Online until February 28, 2025. ". But can I switch my durham or Morganton first choice and second choice preference? I would want to be able to switch it before my first choice makes a decision that way I can be considered for both if I get rejected from first.
Ie. Durham 1, Morganton 2, online 3 to Morganton 1 and durham 2 online 3 before durham decides to accept me so I can be considered for Morganton first then durham second.
I've got a handful of activities relating to music such as marching band, honors band and a honor society. Since NCSSM is more science and mathematics focused (I do have some related activities for this), would these still be helpful to put in my application?
does STEM volunteering go in "Extracurricular, community service, honors, awards, and volunteer activities (both in-school and out-of-school):" or "Please list your activities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics from 7th grade through the current term:"
does anyone need 3 tickets to the durham open house tomorrow?? something came up and i cant go!!
Is it possible to get into an NCSSM residential program and the summer ventures. I would much rather get into NCSSM itself, so should i just not apply for summer ventures, or are those two things independent of each other regarding getting in
I've been looking into NCSSM recently (I think it's pretty worth the travel from these reviews) and came across an interesting piece in the application section. "Applicants for the Residential and Online programs must be in their second year of high school."
I am currently in my junior year of public, district mandated high school, and I am MISERABLE. I know Junior year is supposed to suck but jeez... anyway, I am really interested in this school, it's ethics and its potential to teach me what I want so badly to learn. Is it possible for me to still apply and get my 2 years if I'm already a Junior?
Probably not, huh? :(
I wrote my essay without the character limit in mind. I think it turned out really well but unfortunately it's about ~3600 characters-1.8 times the character limit(2000)- long. Any ideas on how I can condense my essay to be a little bit more concise without losing the compelling nature/"soul" of the essay?
The application is asking my level of coding experience and what coding languages I know 😭
So basically, freshman year I was supposed to take bio, but ig I was really unlucky, because it was full (I took earth and environmental honors😭), and now I’m a sophomore taking bio honors. Meaning by the end of sophomore year I wouldn’t have completed chem, and I’m doing the application rn, and it asks if I’ve completed chem or not 😭. My math classes are pretty good, and I have a few leadership positions and awards. I’m also taking AP physics 1, but how badly will not taking chemistry hurt me 😭?
Hi! I'm an applicant from CD7 and had a few worries that I wanted to ask about. I've been wanting to go to since I learned about the school in 7th grade and I'm really worried about my applications.
My parents are really hard on me at home and won't let me do any school work at home which is, obviously, not good for homework and completion grades. I try to do everything at school when I can, but I'm at an early college and have 5 college classes and 1 high school, which means I have a lot of work (a full time college student takes 12 credit hours; I have 15 and an honors high school class) but that meant last years when things started to get really bad my grades were struggling. I had no free periods and couldn't get a lot of my work done because of well...my parents. I ended up with a C and an F. I am retaking the C class my spring semester and I just retook the F class (I got an A+!). My parents are border line abusive but don't want to get reported again and I'm trying really really hard to get in so I can achieve my full potential. How much will this impact my chances of getting in? I'm also explaining this in my essays. Also if I explain this in my essays will the selection committee or someone have to report my family?
I came from a "gifted and talented" middle school and when I moved to my current high school, I had already completed 6 of 16 available credits. As an underclassman, I wasn't allowed to take any college classes. They had to make an exception for me my sophomore year because at that point I had completed 13 of 16 available high school classes. Now, I'm being overloaded with college courses. How much will this affect my chances? This also means though, that I've gone a year and a half without math (I took honors math 3 fall semester my freshman year), a year without science (I took honors chem my spring semester freshman year), and a year without english ( I took honors english 1 my fall semester freshman year and honors english 2 my spring semester freshman year). I'm not allowed to take college core until my next spring semester.
Would someone mind looking over my essays and ECs?
Hi yall! I just moved to NC over the summer so adjusting to school is hard in itself. I’m a freshman so that was a bit of a jump too. I’m a bit lost about extra curricular’s however.
EC’s I do:
Debate FCCLA Theatre Wrestling
I’m aware they aren’t a lot. I’m here for recommendations and anything that could help my application. I have lots of awards from middle school but nothing as of now. My grades are good and i’m taking 1 AP class.

do you think I would be able to get in with these stats. Im worried because I don't have the best gpa in school?
Hey guys I’m a sophomore right now with a 4.25 weighted gpa.( Ik I kinda sold) but I have really good ECs do u think I have a chance at making it? (I’m president of coding club and robotics club as well as I’m president of a non profit) with a bunch of other ECs and about like 7-10 awards. Do you think I can still atleast get into online?
I’m a rising sophomore from cd 9 wondering how competitive the district is compared to others. Also if anyone could review my stats that would be appreciated.
whats the point of them asking this?: Do you regularly use a graphing calculator in math and/or science courses? Does it make me more competitive if i say yes
